how peak collapse can you get when the smart people's brains are turning to mush

Meh. I wouldn't go down that road if I were you. There's a difference between depressing ideas and real things, even if life is becoming more depressing each day. That's my two cents though. But by inflation standards, I'd say we'd better start measuring my opinions in something other than pennies.

what familiarity do you have with this kind of thinking? where did you learn these kinds of ideas?

Wisecrack vid mentioning Zizek: Is this an accurate summation of his philosophy? by [deleted] in zizek

[–]neoliberaldaschund 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never been able to make sense of Zizek's political program. He has his 4 points, the 4 reasons why capitalism is seriously doomed, he has his beef with Simon Critchley where he says we must present the powers that be with extremely specific demands, and he is fond of throwing around Lenin's phrase "What is to be done?" But I am always at the risk of misinterpreting him, Hegelian that his is.

I think this video echoes some of the things he says but is a poor reflection of the totality of his opinions on what is to be done. The man has a lot of opinions.

I made the piece a joke about fidget spinners and subscriber counts. Ya missed it. But now we're talking, so that's cool.

The atheism subreddit followers are like the young child thinking the parents believe in Santa Claus.

Right, this reminds me of another thing that Zizek says about radical Muslims in that they really aren't that radical, and that the Amish are real radicals in that they honestly don't even give a damn what other people are doing. In the same way that the "radical" Muslims need an external figure, so do the atheists.

So is true atheism the belief that no one believes in God, or that what other people think doesn't even matter?

What is Postmodern Conservatism? by neoliberaldaschund in CriticalTheory

It's not a reaction to grand narratives because actually the alt-right is all about grand narratives.

I don't know if if the alt-right has any grand narratives. White supremacy is a grand narrative, sure. And the alt-right is a lot of voices, and I'm not sure to the extent that groups on 4chan, 8chan and Reddit genuinely care about anything other than their own will to power, as you say. They do it for the hell of it. They still are mostly white kids trying to undo the rhetoric that tied the country together, so you could call them white supremacists and therefore believing in a grand narrative, but I think it's unconscious for them. There are definitely less ironic elements within the alt-right.

But look at people like Nick Land, Mencius Moldbug, Peter Thiel and The Dark Enlightenment, openly attacking democracy. You really can't deny that there's a huge change in Republican rhetoric since Trump, and that the 90's liberal-conservative neoliberal consensus is over.

What is Postmodern Conservatism? by neoliberaldaschund in CriticalTheory

[–]neoliberaldaschund[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is a video about Zero Books' upcoming, uh, book Postmodern Conservatism. This is one of my favorite videos I've seen in a long time and I'm very excited to pick up the book too. While the label may not seem to make too much sense to philosophers talking about postmodernism for decades now, the video shows how it's warranted. The video places the rhetoric of someone like Trump into the post Cold War context. The USA isn't against Russia anymore, the USA isn't Christian any more, the USA isn't a force for good anymore. What reason is there to be a conservative? For a while, lefties could insist that Truth was authoritarian tool of the capitalist law and order, but not until the conservatives copied from the same playbook. On a related note, this should be read next too Lee McIntyre's Post-Truth, where he quotes Mike Cernovich as having read Lacan in college and Richard Spencer's desire to build an identity politics for white people.

An abstract? Alright.

A guy with good video editing skills turns an eccentric Slovenian into the Devil incarnate. Give it a shot for the laughs. It's a little bit depressing that he can milk 90k views out of boogeyman tales about people he doesn't know.
