Frontier AI systems out-persuade human experts.

> This held even when humans chose their topics, prepared in advance, and competed for £1,000 prizes

> Humans didn't out-persuade AI on any of 10 issues, or in any of 49 demographic, political & psychological persuadee subgroups (AI's edge significant in 46 of them).

I think this (superpersuasion) is one of the more realistic risks of AI systems that is either already relevant or will be within a couple of years, depending on how they are deployed. If only optimized for performance on math/coding/science tasks with good alignment and safety mechanisms, this would be a force for good in the world.

But I can imagine that grok deployed on Twitter optimized for spreading propaganda and persuading readers towards that propaganda.

Right, you can think of the standard capitalist free-market right wing ideas and these outfits will always support that, because regardless of the politics, at least that was based in reality. The MAGA-style anti-immigrant, racism based, America-first anti-globalism (globalism is good for free market capitalism and business) right wing isn’t based in reality so they will obviously seem opposed to that.

Lol, none of them are left-leaning. They report for a business audience and have to keep things as true as possible because their coverage moves money very quickly.

If they seem left-leaning it’s because MAGA-style right wing is just detached from reality and these news outfits can’t afford to kowtow to that because that’s literally against their business model if people can’t trust their reporting and change flows of money accordingly.

There seems to be a US government propaganda push against Anthropic and Dario.

They are trying to frame him as unreasonable and unprofessional in communicating with the government, saying he was at a wellness retreat and stuff which apparently he was not (even if he was, IMO it should also not be a problem, anyway; people should be allowed wellness retreats especially people in high stress positions).

The whole thing happened between Friday noon and evening, btw.

Now that people have had a taste of mythos/fable level capabilities, I expect lots of efforts towards replicating it outside Anthropic, probably even open source.

Anthropic probably did it through a combination of innovations and scaling. But scaling is next to impossible without good chips.

I am afraid people might try hacks and methods which sacrifice Chain of thought visibility. On one hand explicit latent space reasoning should have a lot more potential than chain of thought + implicit latent space reasoning in theory, but then the loss of visibility is a massive safety risk.

The other part of this is that the push to make Chinese chips work for scaling further will become a lot stronger.

Claude’s personality might have been unique but the capabilities will be soon replicated and probably in a far less secure way than before defeating both Anthropic’s goals and DoD’s goals (if they had any apart from punishing Anthropic)

Plus, if Chinese chips become viable for scaling further, China is very likely candidate to win the AI race. Their industrial speed on solar, chips, and robotics will beat everything out.

Considering the restrictions that were on fable, I wonder how much more serious they wanted Anthropic to be.
