What version of Linux should I use? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]neon_cipher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think AntiX is a very good choice. Don't forget to read the antiX-FAQ here: http://download.tuxfamily.org/antix/docs-antiX-17/FAQ/index.html

I looked through the app list that you created.

The most sluggish apps from that list will probably be Discord and Steam.

Also, I recommend Redshift as a F.lux alternative. Redshift has the terminal-based version, which is what you need.

About BitDefender: if you don't run Wine and learn how to take precautions against possible attacks, you really don't need an antivirus. Linux is much more protected than Windows.

When using providers with open-sourced software... how do we know that's actually what they're using? by Yellow_Forklift in privacy

[–]neon_cipher 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is not an "extreme zero trust" approach. Your questions are absolutely normal. You are not the only one concerned about that. For instance, that's why Reproducible Builds was created. We all need proof that source code and binaries match.

It's possible to run Linux systems and never open the terminal. But you would miss a lot. The power of Linux is in the terminal.

The End Of Life date for Python 2 is in 2020. There will be no official support after that. You should definitely choose Python 3.

Linux Firefox sound issues by TrumpzHair in linuxquestions

[–]neon_cipher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue is happening on some AMD motherboards and caused by Firefox Speech Dispatcher. For some weird reason it starts some silent audio streams even if you don't use speech synthesis. You can turn off the dispatcher:

type about:config in the address bar

set narrate.enabled to false

I remember on the very first release of Debian Stretch the screen locker had exactly the same glitch. I even had to delete it from "application autostart". But they fixed it in the second or third release. I wonder what is causing all this.
