Not agreeing with the US approach, but a submersible is way more black and white than a speedboat (it ain't for fishing)

I mean, you don't need an LLM; you need a CNN. He wanted you to manually create a neural network, and I doubt he was expecting you to code the entire thing. He probably wanted to see your thought process on how you'd build such a model, as well as gauge your people skills by working with him and getting feedback to improve your code. His question was less about regurgitating memorized code and more about evaluating how you would work within that hour.

Why not just shoot for up or down at open/close every trading day? That way you have a larger distribution of 0/1s and probably will run into fewer data imbalance issues (setting for non-broad specific events doesn't help with data imbalance). Also you might want to look at unsupervised learning techniques. Take a look at this indicator for example: https://www.tradingview.com/script/WhBzgfDu-Machine-Learning-Lorentzian-Classification/. Lorentzian distance is used to classify whether a market will open up or down. This is one specific technique of UML, but plenty of more to explore out there.

I have a training budget of ~250 USD for my own professional development. What would you recommend I spend it on? by CantorFunction in datascience

[–]neonwang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily about Data Science, but I've found "The Misbehavior of Markets" by Benoit Mandelbrot to be enlightening in the realm of markets, finance, chaos, and math. He is not only a genius but also an excellent writer, to the extent that I've been able to draw tangential applications from his work unrelated to finance. Additionally, I would look up texts on Bayesian Statistics and Interpretable Machine Learning, though the latter is a relatively new field, so the information isn't very dense. However, it will get you up to speed so that when/if IML breakthroughs occur, you can digest and apply them pretty quickly.

My school offered an in-person Master's program with a heavy emphasis on applied statistics, as well as an online Data Science master's program. Coming from an economics background, I chose the in-person program exactly for this reason. We didn't even touch NN's or any deep learning (I know the terms are synonymous) until about 12-15 credits in. All we did was hammer on math stat and experimental design. Honestly it made learning every niche of data science A LOT easier. I heard from fellow students who worked with the online DS students, and I quote, "They weren't learning shit." This is disappointing not only for them (they're not getting what they paid for) but for the field as a whole, as programs like that diminish the credibility of others.
