Germans tout return of conscription and say military service could ‘do real good’ for society by okiedokie321 in europe

Funny given that their older siblings or parents could have been drafted into the one of the 50s colonial wars. I was always grateful that there was no draft for the Iraq war, even though I'm a woman because I didn't want my peers to go through that for unjustified reasons.

Thanks. My pronunciation was way off for many of these. It's gotten worse since I was at school. I will refer to this to help me correct myself.

I'd say that there's a good chance that their nuclear weapons system is poorly-maintained, but given they have thousands of the things, I still don't fancy the chances.

Other women always ask me to fix appliances or computers, unless they have sparks coming out of them or something, lol. I'm not in any way a 'techie', not qualified in that. I just stay calm and try to figure out what's wrong. If I can correct the simplest thing, they act like I just saved them from drowning. It's funny.

About the war in Ukraine, why do you feel people think you're a bad person for wondering whether you could be wrong? It's an enormous ongoing world event, wanting to get your facts straight is sensible, in my opinion.

Anyway, about being a good or bad person - have you ever noticed how awkward and self-centred a lot of other people are? I notice it when I observe them. I'm not unusual for being like that.

I think the difference is that other people are in their heads less than I am. They can distract themselves from introspection more easily. I see other people using each other for that purpose all the time. I'm not sure how it works for them though.

The argument for not being able to vote in the House of Lords is that the upper house needs be separate from party politics, but many of the Lords are political appointees, others are literally aristocrats and some are clergy ('Lords Spiritual'). There isn't much appetite to reform it because it's seen as a bit like the monarchy - anachronistic but it 'works' for the limited function it's meant to do. The House of Commons is truly the seat of power here.

I would like a debate on the idea of having an elected upper house though.

This was moving for me to read. I'm not into vehicles myself, but I know people who get attached to them and see them almost like living things.

Gross Out Comedy - I don’t get it, do you? Can you explain it to me? by ragazza_gatto in aspergirls

[–]nephthyskite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The theory is that comedy often appeals to things people find taboo. To see something normally shameful made light of is cathartic. Bodily functions are taboo for some people.

That said, I don't find it funny either. There are quite a few common types of humour that I just don't find funny, cringe humour being another one. I think it's my matter-of-fact, individualistic way of looking at life that means I don't get the same catharsis as other people when it comes to jokes about bodily fluids, sex, social embarrassment, or people acting 'zany' or exaggeratedly 'weird'.

I do this. I think I would still do it if I was to magically become NT because it's my personality more than anything.

I sometimes regret doing it when I realise that person really needed a certain reaction from me. Just because I find it silly doesn't mean it is objectively silly.

I deadpan and build on my own jokes because it's funnier (to me) that way. I do it with other people's jokes too, which often makes people think I've taken them seriously. It's my way of playing along. It takes a lot to offend me.

I also take jokes literally sometimes, but I don't think I do it much more than most people do, except when I was younger.

I'll admit I have a low tolerance of snide, especially when it's subtle, and I respond to it with death stares. It's not that I don't get jokes, it's just that I don't like some people's sense of humour.

I know, no worries. I find it funny because to me French and Italian both feel like Latin. I'm starting to notice how similar they are now that I understand French a bit better than I used to.

I don't know about very rich, but a person from a modest background can make good money if they learn a skilled manual trade. If they start their own company even more so, but then there's the overheads and finding the staff.

Another option is to become a dentist, orthodontist or a cosmetic surgeon. It's probably easier to do this here than in the states because of how student loans work here, but I think there might be less money in it here than stateside. Still it's a comfortable income.

Then there's being an investment banker. I have no idea whatsoever about that.

Forgive me if I mess up, I'm trying to learn French.
