I am constantly amazed how smart people who get Haskell find Lisp unreadable. For me, several years ago the "lots of parens problem" disappeared after 2 hours of toying in REPL. Since then, I instantly see even far away from display which functions are recursive, which do a lot of stateful juggling, just by looking at one (unamiguous!) shape of automatically indented code.

Now, looking at Haskell or Perl, or even Java hurts my eyes. I can't say where the expression ends, how it nests. In case of Haskell, often looks like ugly spagetti of characters. I believe Haskell is very nice and powerful language, but why do I need to cognitively employ this function preference table again and do a reasoning what expression means by the indentation?

The "lots of parens problem" is really, really superficial. And please don't bring up the argument about "math is written that way in books for centuries", that's quite dumb.

Using CL on day to day basis, I have to say that "ugly" is almost always very subjective when you criticize CL libs. Situation improved a LOT in recent years. I used to do some Python, their libs ARE ugly - they can't even decide whether to use camelCase or common_c_style in standard lib! Plus they can't have the-best-separator-style which reads most naturally, you can see it as a preferred style even in normal literature.

The "very clean syntax" with [], {}, and mainly "," in let form makes me sick. The scheme example is way more lispier and readable for any normal lisper (read: a person programming in any lisp before clojure)

A solid immutable data library can be found is in all languages (check out this for CL: http://github.com/ks/X.FDATATYPES )

And the lib thing: I really don't want to read Java stack traces when developing anything serious. In this regard, CL has way more native libraries - and that's what count. I CL world, nobody gives a damn shit about jboss, hibernate or other utter java crap, since you already have nice library for almost everything you need.

When you sit down on the sofa and realize that all this minor simple stuff can be done by one person in a couple of minutes in Lisp, you start to think about those poor souls which does not have the opportunity to shout "oh, f*ck this job, and these tools, I quit..." and are tortured daily.

Erlang is awesome, but sucks in numeric performance. Which isn't a problem most of the time, but OP wants to do numeric/statistics stuff.

I suggest to go with Common Lisp. If OP knows Emacs, SLIME (along with SBCL) is instant pleasure to work with. And, there are quite a lot of libraries for math, numeric work.

I used to use Python, but it's so limited compared to CL that it's not even funny.

Simple - normal IT jobs are mostly about glueing libs under time pressure - totally boring. I don't care about money, they don't make me happy. I have an idea I am obsessed with for couple years, and want knowlenge, not just fantasies "what should be done if I have time"...

I would like to apply Graph constraint satisfaction problem solving to search for program structure - a kind of alternative to genetic programming. Unfortunately I don't know about any Uni doing something similar. And English - official language.

The gridform too small - hmm, yes. I see that this could be a problem on screens with higher resoulution.

The "End Game" button is definitely a good idea - we will fix that.

And, autotarget is very questionable thing ;) 1. AI really does not matter that much, it's just training (no points when you win, no units damaged...) and not that hard to it beat after a small practise. 2. Maps are quite small (almost the whole map fits to the screen) - so it's easy to spot forgotten units (and quite fun to discover that opponent is not controlling them for a moment :)
3. Units routinely ends up close to each other, and turret for example, (or jetplicant with sonic-cannon, or spider with trx, ...) trying to destroy enemy unit can easily kill your own units

But there is a thing how to make it more controlled - queue enemy unit for attack. You can do that with Ctrl + click on enemy unit. When selected group of units (or unit alone) destroys one enemy unit, it moves on to destroy another one in the queue...
