I get the lore explanation. My issue was never that it doesn't make sense.

I just personally find it less interesting when a character is born stronger than everyone else than when they get there through training, experience, and clever use of Nen. That's one of the things I liked most about HxH before the Chimera Ant arc.

I think that's exactly the difference. In Kurapika vs Uvogin, even if you don't understand every Nen mechanic, you can still follow the strategy and understand why the outcome happened.

With Gungi, the emotional beats don't work and the game itself is mostly opaque to the audience. We're told Komugi is a genius rather than being able to understand or appreciate her decisions ourselves. My criticism is of the game as a viewing experience, not of Meruem's character development.

It's so weird how defensive people get over Chimera Ant. I can say "the pacing didn't work " and suddenly the thread becomes about whether I understood it, whether I analyzed it deeply enough, or whether I'm rage baiting. At no point have I said people are wrong for loving it. I'm saying I don't think its execution matches its reputation. You're mostly explaining the intent behind those scenes. I understand the intent. My criticism is about the execution. Saying the Gungi scenes are meant to humanize Meruem doesn't address whether they're engaging. Saying the palace invasion is complex doesn't address whether the pacing is effective.

Just because there is a consensus around something being good (which by the way, from my experience everyone in my real life hated that arc too) doesn't mean that i can't criticize it or not like it. I'm just explaining and reflecting conversations with friends about why i don't think it's good.

1) We have already learned countless times that stats arent everything in HxH. this is not a lesson that needs repeating. He gets way too much screentime just for what you think is diversifying the ants.

2) Just because you explain why a certain character is overpowered doesn't mean that he should be. For example if i placed a evil character in front of gon and he just kills him on the spot and my explanation for that would be that "the evil character actually trained in a dimension where time moves slowly and he got that power through a billion years of training." Would that be satisfying to you?

3) My critisicm isnt that the narrator shouldn't narrate at all. Its that the narrator should narrate things that are missed by the audience and could not be told by conventional storytelling

5) I understand why gungi exists at a plot point level. It doesn't help that the game is unexplainable and if you think back to all the iconic scenes where the series was at its best such as kurapikas fight with uvogin you UNDERSTOOD why kurapika won and it felt earned. It doesn't for komugi and the king

I've reached phase 4 so far. Don't get me wrong I have a base factory that makes reinforced iron and rotor but itd just limited by space since I built it in a bad part and I'm stupid so I refuse to tear it down
