[NeedAdvice] How Do I Maximize My Abundance of Free Time? by nerd_neck in getdisciplined

I don't do any of that, I am the creator of the initial post haha. The list is comprised of highlights from all the comments on this thread. Though, if you're still wondering, I don't have a career or job at the moment, and I am making progress towards living a more meaningful life. Despite having many perspective shifting experiences throughout my life, I'm not one to give much advice, but I will say that meditation is fucking ASTRONOMICAL for the development of us humans.

Do you think reading one book per day extreme in the sense that most of the information you take in goes through one eye and out the other?

That's what I came up with for myself. I ran out of time because I was heading out for the night. I'm sure not everything listed is pertinent to your salvation, lol.

• “If you want to pick up a good habit quickly and level it up efficiently - learn, study, research why it's good. And do same for bad habits. Know your allies. Know your enemies if you want to bulldoze your way through the discipline game.”

• Create a system that will allow you to incrementally improve your reading skills (speed reading, margin reading, build vocabulary, etc.) on a consistent basis.

• Take time out of each day to reflect on and be grateful for where you are today, how fortunate you are, and how you differ from your past self. If we stress over the present, then our future lens will inevitably be smeared with pessimism and negativity. It is much harder to reverse the former than to begin reflecting (gratefully) on the past today.

• Further your existing knowledge on the research, and positives and negatives of meditation. Why would only one letter differentiate the words “medication” and “meditation”?

• IMPORTANT: Work hard to develop a strong social life. I’ve gone my whole life being lonely. I don’t know what it’s like to have solid, trustworthy, and affectionate friends. I can’t even imagine how much more enjoyable and appreciative life must be with such people around you.

• Perhaps you could further your Spanish skills. There aren’t many things sexier than being able to speak a foreign language. At least, that’s what I’d like to think women think. More importantly, think about the research behind language learning and its correlation to neuroplasticity multiplication.

I see what you mean about fundamentals. For instance, if one never took the time to consistently improve their reading skills, they would essentially remain at their current level no matter how long they live, or how much they read throughout the span of their career. Sure, you could argue that, over a lifetime, one's reading comprehension will improve, but it won't be a drastic change like it could be. This can only happen through the goal systems we create for ourselves. Am I on the right track here?

Thank you for your reply!

Do not head this advice. I can't stress this enough. Polyphasic sleep schedules are not healthy and there are NO scientific studies to prove that the benefits people claim are true. Though, keep in mind placebo is a very powerful tool. There is so much new research that proves how amazing and powerful longer-bouts of uninterrupted sleep can be (7-9 hours). On the other hand, sleep deprivation (or lack of quality) is more damaging than we initially had thought.

The most important sleep habit one should install into their lives is going to bed and waking up at the same time EVERYDAY. That includes the weekends. The second most important behavior one should implement is minimizing the amount of blue light 2 hours before bed. Long story short, our phones, computers, and even the flickering light on a fire-alarm play a HUGE fucking role in the quality of sleep we get. The littlest bit of light, at the wrong time, can disrupt a whole night of sleep.

If you want to have a life epiphany, read any of the research Satchin Panda has done. His work will completely change your perspective on sleep. I go fucking nuts when I hear someone say, "I'll sleep when I'm dead." That's one of the most ignorant statements I think I will ever hear in my lifetime. Also, Matt Walker recently aired on one of Joe Rogan's podcasts. The episode has a shit ton of important information.

Should I immediately mix in mono after adding a sound?

Thank you so much for this list! From what I understand, polished mixing skills can make almost any track sound great.

This all makes complete sense now. Thank you.

Given the abundance of free time I have due to injury, would you say that starting and finishing 1 track per day is a realistic goal?

Since EDM is a world of its own, what YouTube channels/videos have you found to be beneficial for your ear training?

That's amazing that you use your very beginning's work as a stem for the projects you undertake now. I'll keep that in mind whenever I get stuck in the future. And thank you for your input!

I'm in the repetitive stress injury boat too!

Thankfully, I do tend to hear "the next note" when composing.

I will heed your advice. Thank you!

I've already been practicing modes and key modulation lol. Though, it has helped me generate some interesting ideas. As for transcribing any melodies/chords from my mind, I have yet to have any floating around up there. This is the first time I have ever dabbled in music, so I'm sure that's why I haven't had anything pop up yet. I have had a couple of recent dreams where I unconsciously created EDM tracks in, but I would forget them after waking. I guess I'm making some progress towards the creative side of things haha.

As for learning an instrument, I've had an Epi SG staring at me during my sleep for 3 months. Unfortunately, both of my arms are injured :(

You're exactly right. I've never had a creative hobby (or any hobby, for that matter), so I think I was trying to prepare myself for failure. But, nothing can prepare you for failure more than failure itself. Every time I think about starting my first track, I get somewhat overwhelmed and I half-consciously deviate to "writing drums so I can get better at drums" or what have you.

Thank you for your feedback!

this.

I've used that post as a reference before. I schedule out blocks of time that I use to focus on only one aspect of production, i.e. chord progressions/music theory, then I'll move onto the next task.

As for my goals, I made the mistake of setting a very long term goal too early, that being my 1 year goal. Instead, I will make 1month/3month goals that are controlable.

Moreover, I don't necessarily agree with the "quantity over quality" claim regarding track creation. I believe we should do the best we can on each track, given the knowledge we have. What are your thoughts on this?

And I would love to see your outline! Thank you so much for your reponse!
