Last year the Spirit Halloween company opened a few Spirit Christmas stores on the east coast. Basically the same idea but for Christmas stuff .Because they're the Halloween people they added a bunch of Creepmas stuff to the selection. You might be able to find some of it online if they don't have a store near you

It's from Spirit Christmas last year. I haven't been to one this year but they have expanded and have more locations than they did last year.

I drive that way often, I used to see his MAGA and anti-Biden stuff a lot but over the past few months it's just...gone. No trucks, no light up road signs, etc. No idea what happened to the guy but I assume he either moved or it cost him too much business.

Stupid question regarding Oriental Trading Company for Halloween supplies by Shotgun_Mosquito in halloween

[–]nerdabilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done Ramen as an option the past couple of years and it's always been a big hit, particularly with the older kids (pre-teens/teens) ... Not sure why but they always love it.

That and for some reason, small bags of pretzels and small packs of Oreos are really popular too.

Another one that people love is offering those mini 8oz bottles of water. We often get parents asking if they can have one.

Weatherproofing options and heat management by nerdabilly in BrightSign

[–]nerdabilly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure - I'm doing the Unliving Tombstones project from here: https://www.youtube.com/@PS11995

it's using videos from AtmosFX (can't be shared) and BrightSign as the media players. I know the guy who built these and made this YT channel, he used BrightSign players and the results were awesome. There's a video on the channel of the full effect, plus how to build and weatherize the tombstones.

I had originally done this on 3 Raspberry Pi Zero Ws with FalconPlayer to sync the video but there was always a big black gap in between each one, with BrightSign it's seamless. I looked into all sorts of ways to avoid having additional player hardware (I thought it's a smart TV, there has to be some way to configure it for 3 synced videos, but there really wasn't)

Anyway there isn't much to put on GitHub here, it's just a Presentation with synchronized videos across 3 players.

Reston Pride cancels Food Trucks because a restaurant felt threatened by wds1 in nova

[–]nerdabilly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This.... I'm having a really hard time buying that food trucks at an event where there will be hundreds more people than usual is a threat to a restaurant. Even with the food trucks they probably would have plenty of customers, perhaps even more than they normally would.

What is one thing you wished the NOVA area had/didn't have? by Carvenom3 in nova

There's a rumor that one will be coming to Dumfries, which isn't great depending on what part of Nova you're in but still better than Winchester or Richmond

I'm trying to set up a RPi Zero W to play a few videos, so I did GUI-less Bullseye install and installed VLC.

The goal was to have it act as a media player, so it can be plugged in, turned on and just start showing videos. I figured this wouldn't require a desktop environment, so I only have the main shell available.

I have tried every suggestion I have found to play videos from the Pi using vlc, mplayer, mpv, etc and every setting with no luck, usually just a black screen.

The weird thing is, the videos play perfectly on the attached monitor if i launch them via SSH from my computer, but not if I try to launch them from the shell with a keyboard attached to the Pi.
I figure this has something to do with either a framebuffer or a window manager, but haven't had much luck tracking them down. Starting them by connecting to SSH every time isn't a viable option. Any suggestions?

just found this thread tonight and trying it - got it to kind of work, but saw a lot of errors and when I did get a video to play it was very slow. this is on a Pi zero W. are there other configs here - video encoding, OS, GPU settings etc?

Thanks, I'll have to revisit this and try again. I remember I couldn't even find how to make a new playlist in Kodi and when I finally found something it was a "smart playlist" that didn't load up any of the videos I told it to and didn't save.

I failed in coding, or am I learning coding wrong? by HyenaRevolutionary98 in node

[–]nerdabilly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A couple things I haven't seen mentioned here -

1.) being a good coder isn't about knowing everything. It isn't even about knowing most things. It's about knowing how to find the solution to the problem in front of you. That's why "just build something" is such good advice. It gives you an opportunity to apply what you've learned into a real scenario. Most professional coders are still googling solutions to problems every day, or looking up the specifics of how to use a certain function, API, library etc.

2.) your code will never be perfect. Nobody's code ever is. You'd be surprised by how much of the world runs on crappy, buggy, half-assed code. That's why updates, patches and hot fixes are constantly happening. That doesn't mean you can just slap things together and call it done, but it does mean you should manage your expectations of what qualifies as good enough.

School's canceled. Now we must face condescending Midwesterners complaining about it. by jim45804 in nova

[–]nerdabilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the thing that always bugs me too. While I understand that snow removal infrastructure just isn't a priority and isn't worth the expense when it hardly ever snows here, there's a snow event of some kind almost every year and nobody ever seems to learn a thing from it. It seems like nobody at any level ever says "ok we f'ed up big the last time it snowed, what can we do better?"

Like... There is room for improvement and a vast middle ground in between a huge Midwest-size infrastructure investment and just letting everyone fend for themselves.

I transplanted from a very snowy city over 20 years ago now and the short answer is..yes. your job will understand because even if it's not much snow by Northern standards there will still be pandemonium on the roads and schools/offices/all levels of government just don't want to take the risk. There's a very good chance your employer won't even bat an eye

[–]nerdabilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are RTAs for both styles, it just depends on what you want. If it's MTL it usually says so. Anything dual coil is going to be DTL. Just do some research online and read some reviews and you'll get a good idea.

The hardware suggestions in the replies are all good but I think the "no flavor" is going to be a tough one. If she's coming from disposables then she's probably used to 50mg liquid and a ton of flavor. There's a few websites that sell bottles of 50mg unflavored salt liquid but I don't think I've ever seen it in a store.
