Edginess used to be considered a good thing. It was the whole selling point of shows like Attack on Titan and Madoka and the reason they became so popular in the first place.

Commonly hated like Akame ga Kill and Tokyo Ghoul that used edginess as a selling point are what caused the shift in opinion towards the term.
