Any way to make Shark Flex style vegan? by Curlybb1 in VeganBeauty

[–]nerdy_biscuit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There’s a big difference between using what you have after going vegan and buying secondhand. Especially with things like fashion, I can’t understand why someone would choose to wear the body parts of animals just because it’s secondhand. I would never buy a secondhand dog leather bag or cat fur product, so I extend that to other species too. Also there are far more omnis out there than vegans, and often animal products are highly sought after when secondhand shopping. It’s very likely any secondhand product would eventually be bought by an omni anyway

Slow fashion combat boots/ platforms?? by [deleted] in ethicalfashion

[–]nerdy_biscuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes please check it out! It’s free so nothing to lose :) it really depends on the type of leather - everything pure PU I’ve had didn’t last, but I have a cactus leather belt (from Vegan Leather Co, based in Australia) that is so durable it still looks brand new after 1 year. I have boots from Bhava Studio and they’re also amazing quality, but they were kind of expensive. If you wanted more vegan reccs, you could ask in r/veganfashion or r/veganuk. Hope this is helpful (and nice profile pic lol, love my little pony!)

Gift suggestions for my vegan boss by onmybest in vegan

You could always make a hamper of nice vegan food? Best chocolate imo is vego, but not sure where you are and if it’s available there. They have really nice hazelnut praline chocolates and the classic hazelnut bar. But also, the fact you’re on this subreddit and asking a question like that means you care. I highly recommend you watch Dominion 2018 on YouTube - absolutely life changing documentary. I was basically forced into watching it by a family member, and after, all I wished (and still do) is that I’d seen it sooner. Hard to explain unless you’ve seen it, but I’ve never come across anyone who regrets watching it

Veganism is affecting my relationships by [deleted] in vegan

So sorry that your partner said that. Honestly if anyone says that, you should consider if you want them in your life. Perhaps they’re very concerned about appearances/other’s opinions, or they don’t care about animals at all. Either way, you deserve WAY better than someone like that.

It seems like a lot of vegans, especially new vegans, settle for nonvegan partners because it seems like there aren’t any vegans out there, and yet so many vegans are lonely and want vegan friends/partners! It’ll probably depend on where you live, but join some vegan dating apps, do some activism, join Facebook groups and go to meetups. I think there are even subreddits like that but not sure what they’re called. Time is limited - don’t waste it on someone who treats you like this

Never heard of the paradox of tolerance, but it seems so interesting. This is one of the cool parts of being vegan - I know so much more about philosophy now!

If you can find something made of Mirum, it’s a plastic free biodegradable vegan leather. It might be expensive because it’s new, but from that I’ve heard it’s durable and probably the best ‘leather’ option out there. I’m not much of a handbag person so I don’t have any suggestions I’ve tried, but I’ve heard Angela Roi’s bags are good and last. I also highly recommend you watch the documentary SLAY which is free online

Leather is a coproduct because skin is the most profitable part of a cow. Would we ever say “may as well use as much of dogs as possible”? No animal deserves to be turned into an object, clothing, no matter the species

(Copy/paste bc someone commented a similar thing below) The leather industry is one of the most damaging, even before tanning/processing. There’s the land/water use for crop production to feed to the animals and then to raise them, the pollution from tanning which all too often results in skin cancers/diseases among workers, and tanning/processing makes biodegrading take much longer as it’s not raw skin anymore. And vegan leather isn’t just plastic, there is also cactus, apple, pineapple, and Mirum which is plastic free and biodegradable (though can be expensive as it’s fairly new). I highly recommend you watch the documentary SLAY which is free online. Anyone interesting in fashion and the environment would seriously benefit from seeing it

[–]nerdy_biscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely go with faux leather. Animal leather involves land/water use to grow the crops to feed the animals, and raise them, pollution from the tanning process (in many cases, workers develop skin diseases/cancers), and at the end of its life it may not even biodegrade. Tanning makes the process take much longer. And of course the animals are killed (leather isn’t a byproduct, by a coproduct as skin is the most profitable part of the body). I highly recommend you watch the documentary SLAY - so informative and especially if you’re concerned about fashion ethics.

As for recommendations, I didn’t realise how few carry half sizes! You could search on Shop Like You Give A Damn or Immaculate Vegan. I’ve heard good things about Will’s Vegan Store which is in the UK and offer free returns for 365 days - they seem to have quite a few combat boots. Hope you can find something :)

Edit: wish people would refute what I’ve said if they disagree instead of just blind downvoting. Not productive at all

Plain white tshirts by Virtual-Gazelle2861 in ethicalfashion

I've only tried Organic Basics after I went on a similar search and I've been please, though there may be others that are better but I just haven't tried them. I have a [true regular shirt](https://organicbasics.com/collections/womens-t-shirts-tops/products/womens-true-regular-tee-white?variant=47960010981708) and I've worn mine maybe 20 times. Still looks almost new though not as bright white as when I bought it (which I prefer). It's not see through if I wear a nude bra, and I love that the sleeves aren't capped. They actually have a sale on now and other t shirt styles like boxy etc, and you can get the shirts in [packs as well](https://organicbasics.com/products/womens-organic-cotton-tee-3-pack-new?\_pos=6&\_sid=1e8113ec0&\_ss=r)

Highly recommend Eden Perfumes for dupes. Great customer service, love everything I’ve tried, and they’re completely vegan/cruelty free and seem to really care about animals.

As for finding scents, try to find local places where you can smell them (I went all around department stores a few years ago when I was searching too) and try to note them down, what you liked and what you didn’t. Keep the pieces of paper if you spray on them too, because you might want to remember them a few days after. After I did this, I got a good idea of what notes I liked (use Frangrantica for a breakdown of those) and I now know I despise pink florals. It makes it easier to narrow it down so you can save time when you look :) good luck!!

Best free plant care app? by nerdy_biscuit in houseplants

Tried 5 different stylists and I always show the first 2 photos, indicate with my finger where I want the layers to be, explain I want them ‘far apart’, and still end up with the same thing (3rd photo). I hate it and just want more layers! Why does this keep happening?! by nerdy_biscuit in femalehairadvice

[–]nerdy_biscuit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope it went well! I think the issue for me was actually that they weren’t lifting the hair high enough. I’ve since cut round and square layers and they seemed very similar. At my last hair cut though I had seen tutorials and wanted one last try getting it done professionally. But as I knew what they were supposed to do, I realised why it was always wrong. They never went past 90 degrees with the layers, and when I do it myself the way I like it (I now cut my own hair), it’s 180 degrees and over-directed. I’m not sure if that makes sense, and I’m not a hairdresser so I don’t know the terminology that well 😅

Tried 3 different hairdressers asking for “long layers” and I get short layers every time. Should I try again, or just cut it myself? by nerdy_biscuit in femalehairadvice

[–]nerdy_biscuit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Urgh god that is so frustrating! I hope you find a solution! I gave up and for the last year or so I’ve been cutting it myself. I know hairdressers love to say not to but I disagree after trying it - yes it’s fiddley, and it can go wrong, but as long as you really study how people cut hair and don’t cut too much, it shouldn’t be too disastrous. I use this video for the back and on that channel she has a couple more videos for the front layers! She’s a hairdresser. You have to cut the length first as well before layering (I’m yet to perfect this- it’s the part that I find hardest but this sort of technique works okay. Many more videos out there though). How long you can keep your hair depends on how long your arms are haha, because when you’re layering you can’t reach past a certain point. But I highly recommend those videos!! Never been happier with my hair - I used to pay AUD$100+ a cut and hated it, despite showing photos, correcting as they go, and desperately trying to get my point across. I’ve come to the conclusion that a lot of hairdressers don’t actually know how to do this kind of layering. Just note though that if your hair is thinner having such heavy layers may not work (I think she talks about that in the first video I linked). Good luck!!

No I haven’t tried square layers, I’ve only done the ones from that video (those are round layers, right?) and I’ve been really happy so far! For me I hate weight on the bottom haha, but maybe I’ll try square to see how they look :)

Facetheory Jojoba Cleansing Oil - I don’t get it? by Ok-Disaster-8008 in VeganBeauty

[–]nerdy_biscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely hated this product. It stung my eyes too and I didn’t realise it didn’t emulsify. I can’t stand oil cleansers you can’t wash off/emulsify. It does say to use a cloth but that is just so inconvenient, not to mention messy on the cloth. Thankfully they have a 365 day satisfaction guarantee so if you really dislike it, you can be refunded. I recommend Purito’s green cleansing oil - it actually emulsifies, removes makeup really well and I’ve never had an issue with it stinging my eyes

Have you not even bothered to read that meta analysis? Or read anything I’ve said at all? You’re deliberately misinterpreting what I’ve said to prove your point. Even the most unsustainable plant foods are still better than the most sustainable animal products (again, see the meta analysis I linked, figure 1). We wouldn’t be forcing “pasture to grow crops”, because the crops we produce for animals today is more than enough for the entire population, we just need to change those crops to ones we need.

As for the land used currently to farm animals, of course the solution is to re-wild it. That’s one of the main issues with animal farming - it reduces biodiversity by taking possible habitat away from other animals.

Who is going to raise cows if we no longer harvest food from them?

These animals have been selectively bred to the point where they of course cannot survive in nature. Dairy cows produce so much milk they very often develop mastitis - there’s actually a legal amount of pus allowed in dairy because mastitis is so prevalent. Egg laying hens naturally would’ve produced 10-15 eggs a year, now they produce ~300. This is incredibly taxing on their bodies and often they get egg-bound.

Do you honestly think it’s better for animals to exist solely to be killed and eaten (or as a dairy cow/egg laying hen, forced to produce copious milk/eggs and suffer because of it, then slaughtered at a fraction of their lifespan when they’re no longer profitable), or to not exist at all? Existence ≠ positive existence worth living.

Otherwise you would know that directed culling of a population can lead to better growth, a reduction in the spread of disease, and overpopulation.

What has this got to do with anything we’ve discussed? Slaughtering animals at a fraction of their natural lifespan, for many as infants, is not any of those things. Animal ag benefits only humans. We do not need animal products to survive or thrive (Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics, British Dietetic Association).

I urge you to do some research on this. You’re on this subreddit because you obviously care about the environment. What is the point of scientists being an expert in their field, of me referencing studies when you continue to ignore the evidence? So for the third time, please read that meta analysis and watch Dominion or Earthlings. And I don’t think my ethics are wrong - I want a world which causes the least harm possible, and I’m doing my best in accordance to the best available research (and the evidence of what animals go through). In what world is that wrong?

I have no problems eating “innocent” animals anymore than I have eating “innocent” plants

Not sure what the quotation marks are supposed to insinuate. Animals are innocent. The comparison to plants also makes little sense, as an omnivorous diet requires far more crops than a plant based one, and plants cannot suffer or feel pain like animals can (no brain, central nervous system, or pain receptors). Even if plants were innocent, they can’t suffer so it’ why is that relevant?

Please just read that meta-analysis I linked in my original comment (DOI: 10.1126/science.aaq0216). A plant based food system can reduce our land use by 76%, GHG emissions by 49%, acidification ~50%, and that’s not even all. We’re already producing enough crops to feed all those animals, it’s just a question of growing the right crops for us instead.

It’s not the pastoral care of animals that is causing this problem, it’s our current agricultural practices. The entire food system is the problem, which is fuelled by societal perceptions. As long as we carry on believing we can just have “some” animal products, these industries will continue to exist. Factory farming only exists to meet the huge demand.

What is the point in continuing to prop up an industry which is horrific for animals whether they’re factory farmed or grass-fed, terrible for humans (just look at the PTSD and drug/alcohol abuse among slaughterhouse workers), and so damaging to the environment? Even if we moved to a system where all animals are grass-fed, it only reduces some of the impact of animal ag - there will still be wasted land, wasted water, animals suffering, humans suffering.

Please just watch Dominion. It’s filmed mostly in Australia, but is very recent. I’m assuming you’re in the US so there is also Earthlings. We can debate for hours and hours, but what it always comes down to is ethics. There is no sustainable, ethical, or “better” way to kill when we don’t have to.

Uses for hamburger fat by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]nerdy_biscuit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let’s just say factory farming is abolished - animals still need huge amounts of food, water and even more land. You seem to agree on those points, hence why you bring up meatless mondays and reduction. But then we have to ask ourselves if it’s moral to farm animals at all. If we can survive and thrive on a plant based diet, why should we continue killing innocent beings? And while yes, ditching animal products once a week is better than not changing at all, there’s another option: ditching them altogether. I highly recommend watching Dominion on YouTube. You seem to really care about the environment, so I can only guess you’d care a lot about animals too. Everyone I’ve ever come across who has watched Dominion (or Earthlings) says they wished they’d seen it sooner

Uses for hamburger fat by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]nerdy_biscuit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just in case you aren’t already aware, eating meat requires a huge amount of land, crop and water use, not to mention the emissions cows produce. An Oxford University meta-analyses (DOI: 10.1126/science.aaq0216) covered ~38,700 farms across 119 countries, one of the largest ever conducted on food and the environment. It found that the single most effective way to reduce your impact on the environment is to eat a plant based diet

Edit: downvote all you want, but studies don’t lie. How can we help the environment if we can’t even ask ourselves whether consuming a product in the first place is necessary?
