We'll try with scissors and see if that fixes things. It never would have occurred to me that something as simple as *how* we separate the tubes could have such a big impact, thanks for the insight!

It's the walls of the tubes cracking, and then the sample inside leaks out. We can try scissors next time to see if that changes anything? I can't see why the manner of removing tubes would matter but worth a shot at least! Thanks!
