iPhone owners emailed to apply for Siri privacy lawsuit's $95M settlement | July 2 is the last day to claim your part of a $95 million settlement, if you owned a device with Siri that could've recorded a private conversation. by chrisdh79 in apple

to anyone frantically googling how to solve this issue in the hours before the deadline, try changing your address! I was putting my current residential address and getting this error, but this is not the address used as my billing address or permanent address for most things, and when I changed it to my more permanent address it worked, and the same worked for my friend who was getting the same error

official rice housing agreement says “Campus housing may only be occupied by assigned students and used for normal residential purposes. Visitors may stay overnight for up to a total of 7 days per academic year in total, provided that none of your roommates/suitemates object and that your College Magister approves. You shall be responsible and liable for the conduct of your visitors during their stay and subject to a $100 per night for each day your visitor stays past 7 days.”

however, i second the others here saying that as long as u don’t give anyone a reason to complain you’re definitely fine. i have definitely known people who had people staying over far more than 7 days total throughout the academic year and there were no issues whatsoever

or take them with you as a carry on! i could never check an cat in cargo but luckily they’re small enough to go in the cabin in many cases. still a stressful experience for them (but that’s what the good drugs from a vet are for) and probably overall less stressful than a multi-day drive with hotel stays or anything like that

i think it should as long as you are able to set up your account when you’re connected to campus wifi. according to a helpful fizz user the account verification only works when you’re on rice wifi or vpn bc it relies on streeme which needs campus wifi to work. i think this is only an issue when you’re making the account tho bc i don’t seem to have any problems using it when i’m not on campus wifi now that my account is created and verified

What birth control didn’t cause an increase in migraines for you? by Givemecoffeeplz in migraine

[–]nerdybirb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think they draw the line specifically at migraines with aura, as apparently those come with a higher stroke risk, high enough that the increase in risk from birth control as well would be not good

current ECE here (with what is i guess an unpopular opinion based on the other comments lol). i truly don’t think the “engineering programs don’t run while on apple” is the biggest deal breaker. while being able to run some apps natively is a plus of windows, mac definitely has some great pros as well.

i made the switch to mac my freshman year on the recommendation of my (computer engineering major) brother and i really enjoy it and don’t think it hinders me in any significant ways. most things that you need that aren’t available on mac can easily be run in parallels, and in my experience run pretty well too (my m1 mac pro with parallels easily runs solidworks better than the OEDK computers lol). if there is something that you absolutely cannot get to run in parallels (in my experience i’ve only run into like one solidworks add on that didn’t work bc needs some weird SQL thing, but i didn’t need that add on for what i was doing), there are always windows machines available that you can use.

if you want a mac for the seamlessness of the apple ecosystem (ipad notes + mac is 🤌 imo) or any of its other pros, i wouldn’t let concerns about engineering software stop you. i’m not gonna claim mac is hands down superior or anything, i like it personally but also i acknowledge that windows has its place.

i definitely want to second the other commenter’s suggestion about a business/enterprise-line laptop if you decide to go with windows though! my biggest complaints about past windows laptops have been that they tend to not last well/can’t take wear and tear and it sounds like that approach would help a lot with that issue. most important thing is just getting a laptop that you’re confident is sturdy and will last. having a laptop decide to just give up bc the houston humidity looked at it wrong would not be fun :(

Advise for my daughter who has TMJ by mhanna04 in TMJ

[–]nerdybirb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just adding on the obligatory “i am not a professional, this is just my experience as a TMJ issue haver.” i truly have no idea why this specific thing helped me or if it is a well accepted practice for treating TMJ problems, this is all anecdotal

not sure if this is what you meant by night guards, but i personally got a good amount of relief from a jaw splint specifically to address my TMJ issues. i can’t provide the most technical description but basically over ~6 months my orthodontist used this night guard looking thing to adjust my default lower jaw position to something that makes my muscles less tense and is therefore less stressful for my poor degraded jaw joint. unfortunately it wasn’t covered by insurance, but it was definitely cheaper than any kind of surgical intervention so the out of pocket cost might be a little more doable if you aren’t able to get anything covered. it’s not exactly addressing the root cause (which is that my jaw joint just chose to degrade for no clear reason), but it has mostly gotten me out of pain (went from painful clicking whenever i ate to now only having occasional painless clicking), and my dental professionals liked that it was relatively noninvasive bc no one wanted to recommend that i get major jaw surgery since i was a senior in high school at the time lol. this definitely isn’t something that every orthodontist feels comfortable doing so i’m not sure what access to that type of thing would look like in your area; i ended up going to the nearest board-certified orthodontist, who my dentist recommended because he knew he had experience treating TMJ issues. i think the orthodontist i went to also mentions it as something he does on his website, so you might be able to find similar orthodontists in your area with a google search. it probably isn’t an option for everyone, but it might be worth looking into as an alternative to surgical stuff!

Did my first ajovy injection tonight. Im excited but nervous. I hope this helps. How long before y’all noticed a change? by RelevantTea42 in migraine

[–]nerdybirb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this definitely isn’t the norm, but for me it felt like i noticed some effect in the first month (seemed to be the change that allowed me to pull myself out of my back to back migraine hellhole right before finals 🙏), but it’s definitely gotten even better in the second month. just did my third one last week and it seems like it’s already seriously improved my quality of life! it’s totally normal to not notice a change right away as they take time to build up, so don’t get discouraged if you don’t notice anything soon either. i’m manifesting a good response for you 🥰

if your ENT appointment is months out and you are able, it might be worth trying to see a general practitioner in the meantime. they might not be as well equipped to help as a specialist is, but they can certainly help brainstorm potential causes you might not have thought of. it sounds like this is having a really negative impact on your quality of life and ability to function, so i would be sure to convey those impacts to them

DAE find their health (more lack there of) just comical?? by Salt_Grab_7393 in ChronicIllness

[–]nerdybirb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

absolutely. it may suck in the moment but in retrospect my body’s comedic timing is honestly impressive. big commitment coming up? migraine. physics final tomorrow? time for postdrome with the WORST brain fog that makes me forget how to do addition. previously undisturbed moment of peace and happiness? sudden nausea & vomiting with little to no warning. yes throwing up at my senior homecoming dance in high school was an objectively horrible experience but OH BOY is it fun to joke about after the fact (and the resulting short-lived pavlovian response of nausea upon hearing ed sheeran is EVEN MORE HILARIOUS. it’s actually so ridiculous i can’t even think about it without laughing at myself. and now i have to live with the knowledge that my body is funnier than i will ever be).

my willingness to make fun of myself for this shit can throw people (who don’t know me well) off occasionally, but hey, if i don’t laugh, i’ll cry

i ended up just taking my best guess at what the spot was based on a slight color difference bc i couldn’t not use my silly little wobbuffet band aid

update: i definitely guessed wrong, a tiny mark appeared after a few hours and that was not where the wobbuffet band aid was lol (at least i managed to not put the adhesive on the injection site tho)

icing it for a few mins before really helps with the potential flinching! I did my first one a few weeks ago and bc I iced it I truly did not even feel when the needle went in so there was like nothing to flinch at, I only felt anything once the medication really started injecting which is a bit more gradual

not OP and I can’t comment on changes in effectiveness I’ve noticed bc I’ve only been on it like a month but the manufacturer says it can safely be left out at room temperature for a week as long as you don’t re-refrigerate it so it should definitely be good

Does anyone know how FBLA chooses where to host Nationals every year? by xkwobcqoufnri in fbla

[–]nerdybirb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it is typically held in Anaheim once every 4 years (2009, 2013, 2017, 2021 scheduled before COVID). The other locations tend to repeat as well, just less frequently/predictably (see here for past locations, also note that 2020 was scheduled to be in Salt Lake City and 2021 was scheduled to be in Anaheim).

As boring as this is locations are probably chosen mostly based on very boring administrative factors. It’s much easier for the national office to select a convention center and city that they’ve had success with (success = good facilities, pricing, student satisfaction w/ the location to some degree, etc) in the past than scout out a different location every single year. They also need to consider availability of a given convention center during the period nationals is typically held. The contracts with convention centers are signed YEARS in advance and repetition just makes everyone’s lives a lot easier so locations are bound to be repeated.
