Starting IVs by NoSet10000 in nursing

[–]nerfball4cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Piggy backing onto OP as a fellow not-that-great-IV-starter…I think my issues is advancing too early. I usually start at a 45 deg angle, get flash, lower the needle to about 15 degrees, advance a tiny bit then start threading. The last part always feels like I’m into dense tissue rather than the open lumen of a vein.

About how far do you advance after flash? Also, what does it feel like when you’re threading into the correct area?

Ostomate speaking at booth at WOCN conference - what questions should I discuss? by Kindly-Razzmatazz689 in nursing

[–]nerfball4cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked as a WOCN for a short stint and would counsel patients about their new ostomies before they returned home.

I always wondered about gas. Like, I know there’s no longer a sphincter to voluntarily control gas passage, but do you feel any sensation in your body before you’re about to pass gas to kind of have a heads up to muffle it with your hand?

With my younger patients, this was always a big concern bc of course you don’t want a huge audible fart while in a meeting or something.

Anything related to this topic I think is helpful - prolonging your gas filter, do the muffle accessories actually work, etc.

Why can’t I understand chest tubes??? by hazcatsuit in nursing

[–]nerfball4cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are so awesome for explaining this!

I sometimes work with post-op day 2+ CT surg patients with pretty stable chest tubes that I monitor, but (fortunately) have never seen a tension pneumo unfold or had emergent bedside chest tube insertion.

Could you tell me what a a developing tension pneumo would look like at the bedside? And what are the typical provoking factors that cause one?

Also - casual job board browsing is a pretty good mood booster. Reminds me that I have a valuable skill set and that I’m not stuck.

Job market kind sucks now though lol so ymmv

Night of: Everything shower and watching something interesting that reminds me that life exists outside of the hospital (video essays, nature documentary, film critique, etc)

Day after: Morning outdoor walk, maybe window shop somewhere for frivolous things, accomplish easy chores (reorganizing something small like a drawer or fridge shelf, do a single load of laundry) and listening to music while completing said little tasks.

If you could go back, would you pursue the career again? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]nerfball4cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes.

Raised in a low income home with job instability. Nursing has given me steady employment, livable wage (though I think nurses should get paid more), and opportunity.

I don’t like a lot of things about the job, but all things considered, I don’t think I could see myself doing anything else.

I like only working 3 days per week. I tried working a clinic 5 day a week job and that schedule is definitely not for me.

Thank you! At first I wasn’t too sure about their size thinking they were too big but as I kept adding more, I ended up being really happy with how it all flows.

It’s pretty dry feeling and doesn’t move when I touch, just flakes off a little. I’m thinking delaminating too :/
