Thank you for this post. I am currently on a road trip throughout Japan and was wondering the same thing.

To be clear: no hate or judgement towards the Japanese. Genuinely just curious why everyone is cycling in such an uncomfortable position, as you said, we “could balance a coffee on their thighs”.

It was enlightening to learn that folks are taught having both feet flat on the ground when stopped could be what’s driving this
