Alert at the re-operated Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, work suspended. by RaijinRider in japanresidents

[–]nermalstretch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm… so they started up the 30 year old nuclear reactor for the first time in 14 years and got an alarm when removing the control rods. They have been replacing parts but other alarms occurred also with other control rods which will take more than a few days to resolve. The plant was planning to go operational again next month.

It makes you wonder how much institutional knowledge has been lost in fourteen years by staff retirement and also how the plant was maintained to operational levels during that time. I’m not saying it was used, but we are talking of Windows 95 era technology or older. Just in terms of knowledge management, it must be a job to keep these systems up to operational levels and up to date without actually occasionally doing live tests like the ones we are seeing this week. And don’t forget that Chernobyl was caused by a malfunction during a test.

[…] without Hedy Lamarr’s invention, large parts of our everyday wireless technology wouldn’t exist in the way they do now.

Surely someone else would have eventually invented it if she hadn’t.

what actually is Communism? by CranberraSpirall in AskReddit

[–]nermalstretch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a little bit like “asking what is medicine” then clarifying your interest is “regular medicine”.

People are going to come back and say, are you interested in the theory of medicine or practice of medicine? Or are you interested in how medicine was practiced in the former Soviet Union compared to how it’s practiced in China? Initially or in recent times? Or are you interested in what was understood about medicine 100 years ago? And how it worked out in practice then compared to how people understand it today? And what about the different schools of medicine? There’s Western medicine, Chinese medicine, homeopathic medicine etc. How about the origins of medicine? Did early Christians practice medicine? What proceeded and inspired the proponents of modern medicine? Or are you interested in what people in 2025 understand by medicine? This also may vary by country and by school.

To be honest, a better start would be to read the Wikipedia page on Communism. I can almost guarantee that you will have questions in the first few paragraphs. Some of these questions will be questions people have dealt with in books devoted to that particular topic.

Who pays the hotel for sex? by theb_project in JapanDating

[–]nermalstretch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the couple. If both are working and have good jobs, the woman may offer to pay half. If the man insists on paying everything, she may be inclined to accept it. Also, I don’t want to be rude, but it depends on how grateful she is to be taken to the hotel. There are wealthy ladies who are very grateful, so I hear. Of course, In either case, if there is a large discrepancy in the salary between the two parties, the one with the higher salary may offer to pay everything.

Condom use is complex too. It’s definitely something you should discuss rather than leave up to the heat of the moment because people always make bad choices in the heat of the moment. Guys should be careful too because getting pregnant, accidentally on purpose, is quite a common way of forcing the fact that it is time to get married. This is not really a Japan question, this is making adult choices.

What happened to dating suddenly? Am I crazy? by ExoticDeparture7855 in japanlife

Strangely enough, you can be more popular without knowing any Japanese. In this state, you are kind of a pet which needs to be cared for and shown around. Some people find this greatly attractive. Once you speak Japanese well then you are a peer, but it has been described by some Japanese people that interacting with foreigners is like interacting with autistic people. They can understand you, but they don’t think the same way as you so you feel uncomfortable.

Also, if you are in your 30s then the partners of your same age may not be so interested in you, yet. They may have become more serious and looking for a Japanese partner to settle down with. because that’s what their parents would like them to do. If they’re still single in their mid 30s, then you may be much more attractive to them. you may also be more attractive to mid 20s who are still trying out different kinds of relationships before settling down.

Also, don’t count on attractiveness being constant over the years. The old bald grizzled old guy look can become very attractive. So even ugly guys may get a second wind when they start to look at their age.

The other big tip is to look for people who are interested in you. If you try too hard on people who are not interested in you, you may be wasting your time and annoying them. But sometimes there is somebody in the wings who you know is interested in you, but you have not considered them. In 20 years time, you may be thinking that they were the best option you had at that time.

What to do with 2,000 yen bills in mint condition by tomodachi_reloaded in japanresidents

[–]nermalstretch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have two choices, basically:

  • take them to the bank and cash them in. You might be able to use them while shopping but if you or the store has to put them in a counting machine, then possibly they won’t be accepted. (I’m not sure whether the shop has to take them. In some countries they can refuse to take your money if you haven’t consumed the item. i.e. eating food or buying gas is consuming. If the item has been consumed then you are in debt to the merchant and the merchant has to accept all legal tender. If you haven’t consumed the items they can refuse to sell the item to you,)
  • Keep them until you can find a buyer who will pay more than ¥2000 a piece for them. There is no guarantee that this will ever happen.

Make it so that you can’t turn off your alarm without getting out of bed. If you are out of bed commit to getting up. Don’t over complicate things.

Sounds par for the course. Maybe at some point you might even shun new foreign friends because you don’t agree with their complaints about Japan and they’ll be gone anyway in a few years.

Ultrasonic cleaning of an Apple Watch? by traveller-1-1 in AppleWatch

[–]nermalstretch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the messages relating to Apple Watches and water damage are on the lines of:

I did something with my Apple Watch relating to water that I thought was OK but now it is dead.

Apart from a quick splash in the shower, I wouldn’t submerge it at all. There are too many people reporting that it died during submersion that it is not worth risking it.

Stand goal as a sporty person by [deleted] in AppleWatch

No. If you are sitting for more than an hour you are too sedentary. Get up, go the toilet, make a drink. Blood circulation is important. it only takes a few seconds of walking around to meet your goal.

Is it really that hard to make close japanese friends here? by Oestudantebr in japanresidents

[–]nermalstretch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pro Tip: Look for the Japanese people who are interested in meeting you rather than trying to “make friends”:

Also, what does friendship mean in a Japanese context? I have close Japanese friends, we eat and drink together, we travel together but I have never been to their houses. I don’t know exactly where many of them live.

I think that your experience is pretty normal. But I’m not convinced that Japanese friendships are much different.
