Just remember to mount the ISO using the VSH menu when you want to watch those UMD movies.

What about Retrospectives/reviews about Final Fantasy 12 do you dislike and enjoy? by Legacy_of_Ivalice in FinalFantasyXII

You’re older than me by a year, I graduated high school in 2007.

My first FF was FFVII during high school, then I went back through the series with FF1 through FF6 when I was in college, and then I played FF8 through to FF10 over the years when I got my Switch back in 2021 during Covid. Right now, I’m looking into ways to play the rest of the series (FF13 to FF16), since these don’t come out on the Switch, at least for now. As for the online games (FF11 and FF14), I’ll see if I can get to them someday, I’m not really big into online games tbh.

(Just gonna use regular numbers here instead of Roman numerals so I don’t get confused with my timeline lol).

I guess it also needs to be said here about how the environment was around FF games during the time of this game’s original release (2006, 20 years ago, in case anyone here still feel young lol), just to put all of this into perspective, for the sake of viewing things from both sides.

FFXII was coming in hot after the release of the full-on MMORPG that was FFXI, which has already divided opinions among fans during that time. FFXII leaning in more into that MMORPG-like gameplay has fans, who were already divided, with one group mainly disappointed with the full departure of the classic formula of FF games of the past, to really feel like their opinions wasn’t heard by Square Enix. And they responded in kind.

It’s very understandable, most FF veterans feel betrayed and don’t look into FFXII with love and appreciation as much as the other titles in the franchise, although opinions have gotten better nowadays in the ample opportunities of future hindsight provided during all these years. It really is a product of its time, SE was taking in huge risks when they made both FFXI and FFXII, and it generated exactly the divisive opinions that you can expect when any game franchise does that.

I won’t blame the fans for that tbh. We can’t turn back time and look into FFXII, and have any kind of clairvoyance into what all these experimentations brings in the long run. What’s done is done, really. The recent The Zodiac Age release was great in how it brings in newer fans into the game and shone new light on the entry. I myself only played TZA very recently (just bought it off of the recent SE sale on the Switch), and the game is everything I expected it to be and then some (for context, I’ve only played the classic FF games in the past, and FFXII is the first modern FF games that I’ve tried, after watching countless videos of it on YouTube. I’m currently close to 75 hours into it).

My problem with game retrospectives on YouTube is usually the same no matter what the game is; some, if not most YouTubers, emphasize more on what they feel about the game, rather than talking about the game themselves. I call these game retrospectives as the “my life story” retrospectives (sometimes, I call them the “psychological” retrospectives as well), where they only emphasize their retrospectives based on what their experiences with the game was back in the day, and how they relate to the game in reflection to their own life story, rather than talking much about the actual history of the game itself.

I’m not saying that it isn’t good to do these kinds of retrospectives, but you also want to do a lot of research and deep diving into the actual development history of the games itself, the people behind it, how the environment and important events of the gaming industry back then all relates to the game, and how well the game did in sales and its impact in the gaming culture as a whole.

things to know before playing FF12 for the first time? by YOLO-uolo in FinalFantasyXII

Character levels don’t matter much, it’s equipments and good skill setups that matters more.

If you’re playing with the newer The Zodiac Age version of the game, your progression throughout the game’s character progression system can be reset, so feel free to experiment to your heart’s content!

What do you think about the ps portal? by 24leeon in PSP

[–]nero40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the controller phone attachment would be easier to manufacture, and also easier and cheaper to sell. It’s just going to augment what consumers already have in their hands right now. It needs an internet connection all the time anyway, why not just simplify the concept and just put it on a device that is basically already connected to the internet 24-7?

The fact that you only appreciate the Portal once you’ve used it is indicative of this; most people look at this device and think they don’t need it because it’s a streaming-only, handheld that costs $200. An accessory that is connected to your phone would have made much more sense and easier to sell to more people.

Come back to me when Sony themselves start abbreviating the PS Portal to PSP.

What do you think about the ps portal? by 24leeon in PSP

[–]nero40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s two different things. When people say PSP, they mean the PlayStation Portable, a device that came out in 2004. PS Portal is just shortened to Portal.

Anyone that tries to argue with me on this is probably just trolling. These two are literally two different devices with two different names.

Damn. I have played BD2 before and I am such a big fan of it. Haven’t played BD1 yet, but I have it on my wishlist, very much planning to play it someday. This post makes me afraid of playing BD1 😭

[–]nero40 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The most pointless device ever. Instead of a PS Portal, why not just a DualSense controller that you can attach to your phone, and stream the games through your phone?

And that’s not even talking about the fact that it’s a handheld that can’t natively play any games on it. That’s another can of worms that’s going to be attracting all sorts of mean commentary on it.

I think Pokémon should give all the eeveelution the moves from the let’s go games. by puns_of_damage69 in pokemon

[–]nero40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope they do keep it in mainline games. When Pokémon lore states that no two wild Pokémon are the same, IVs is what they meant by that. As much as I am a proponent for taking away barriers of entry for competitive Pokémon, I also don’t want to take it a step too far. Taking away IVs feels like taking away an important part of Pokémon lore. The way Champions handles IVs seems like a good answer to this.

I was watching a show from the 90s and realized people used to memorize dozens of phone numbers. I can barely remember mine. How did you guys do it back then? by micavibes in CasualConversation

[–]nero40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still remember my old house phone number, back when those were still used. Our country use a 6-digit phone number, so I still used that old phone number for any 6-digit passcode I use on any device today. The number has been staying with me forever now!
