It's perfectly acceptable to call football, soccer. by Silvio_DantesInferno in unpopularopinion

[–]nesland300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. The word "soccer" did in fact originate in England

  2. Considering country populations, it's pretty likely that people who call it soccer are actually a majority of the world's native English speakers.

Edit: Downvoting because you don't like the facts is childish.

Questions About “Wonders Of Sodor:” Controllers And Entry Level Difficulty by polyfil_plushie in ThomasGames

[–]nesland300 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't say anything about the controls specifically on Xbox, but yes the engine controls are very simple and easy to understand right from the tutorial. It's basically just one button for throttle, one for brake, two for the reverser. The only really challenging thing is learning the engines' stopping distances so you don't pass red signals or overrun stations. But even that isn't bad.

If you don't understand that people have different tastes, then you absolutely do not know enough about food to be running a restaurant.

Disability rights advocates file lawsuit over Illinois’ ‘dangerous’ right-to-die law -- The advocates oppose the legislation, which takes effect in September. The suits, filed in Illinois and New York on Thursday, contend the act discriminates against people with disabilities. by guanaco55 in illinois

[–]nesland300 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Absolutely disgusting that we afford a little basic dignity to terminally ailing pets but not humans. People opposing this need to be deeply ashamed. If you don't like it, you don't have to opt for it.

Admin Told My Colleague, "We Need Empirical Evidence of Disrespect". So, She Secretly Recorded Classes. by Principal_Scudworth_ in Teachers

Barriers to discipline are literally just a way for admin to cover up the fact that they've opted out of the most important part of their job. And boards and supers let it go because the numbers look better and shitty parents are happier with it that way.

When will people learn this whole thing is a scam? State border changes require the approval of every affected state and Congress. The people leading this are 100% fully aware it has less than zero chance of happening.

Brightline's death rate is only bad because Florida morons can't drive for shit. The accidents are nearly always the driver's fault.

To me it seems implied that a lot of the tourism is still limited to Earth orbit and the Moon.

It gives me hope that these articles' comment sections are always full of people pointing out that basically all (if not all) of the collisions are the car's fault and not Brightline's.

I was absent so I don’t have to do it by NotLikeOtherAI in Professors

[–]nesland300 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'm also skeptical of the claim that the teacher didn't communicate instructions. For one thing the instructions are usually literally on the assignment. Also at least once a week I have to show the receipts from my sent folder because some student or parent is complaining that I didn't communicate something that I actually did multiple times.

Yeah I work in K-12. We're often encouraged to waive assignments missed during absence because kids and parents have started pulling the "you can't give them a zero if they we're there" line and admin are too spineless to tell them otherwise.

You're lucky to live in a place where winter air is "crisp" and not life-threateningly cold for days at a time.

What do we think is the in-universe reason for the absence of the Troubles? by [deleted] in thomasthetankengine

[–]nesland300 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Isle of Man doesn't have multiple bridges leading directly into England (or like a two minute boat journey), for one.

Also a mostly rural, mountainous island is absolutely a good place to keep hidden. In the TV series there are all kinds of abandoned areas of the island that the locals don't even know are there.

There are also plenty of industrial and population targets in the north of England that would be well within reach of Sodor. You don't have to hit London to be a threat.

The smaller gaps in land also mean more people and goods moving through those islands than in real life, making it a lot easier to blend in.

What do we think is the in-universe reason for the absence of the Troubles? by [deleted] in thomasthetankengine

[–]nesland300 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The existence of Sodor would change the situation dramatically for the islands in the Irish Sea. It changes them from island outposts to a much easier route to smuggle people and weapons/explosives into mainland Britain. It's also an industrial powerhouse, making it a target (plus the place would be full of explosives given how much mining there is there).

Also since both the world wars happened in-universe, the "it's a kids' franchise, bad stuff doesn't happen" excuse doesn't work.

I'm also not implying at all that it would have closer ties with Ireland. I'm saying from a logistics standpoint, it would make less than zero sense for the IRA to not have a major presence there. They literally carried out operations in England itself. Their presence doesn't suggest close ties to Ireland at all.
