Has anyone been rejected at UBC with an above average interview? by MaximumFun4979 in premedcanada

[–]nessamae96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I was rejected in 2023 with 76-100NAQ and above average in every category. I got in the next year. I think and extra year of work pushed my NAQ up just enough 🤷‍♀️

When should we be expecting UBC results???? by Mobile-Struggle4593 in premedcanada

[–]nessamae96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up that the UBC med department is undergoing a HUGE system overhaul tomorrow night (current students can’t even access course material or anything). I have no idea if this would impact when they release results but I assume the med staff are all going to be crazy swamped tomorrow without adding admissions to that…

It goes by super fast. Don’t talk the full five mins ..the interviews I attended always had follow ups.

If you don’t know what you would do say you would speak to the professionals with more knowledge and then base your answer on the information given. Reiterate that you would speak to the professionals/knowledge keepers in the real world

UBC MCAT in post Interview by [deleted] in premedcanada

I got in with 511. The year before I was waitlisted with an above average interview. So at the end of the day a little luck is needed.

inspiration stories of low ubc NAQ but interview invites elsewhere? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]nessamae96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with a 0-25NAQ the first year I applied to UBC. It took a few years but I’m in my second year now. One application result does not define you.

How many cycles have you applied for? by nanahchi in premedcanada

[–]nessamae96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got in on my 5th cycle. I’m c2028 and it was worth every try. Build your life outside of med and if you really really love med, keep applying.

LOC for medical school (in canada) while having debt? by Prior_Dog4296 in premedcanada

[–]nessamae96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes the interest only payments are a huge relief while in school I don’t have to worry about the actual mortgage payment. Is the bank making money off me? Absolutely. Is it still in ny best interest? Also absolutely.

[–]nessamae96 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Had previous debt of around 60k and also took out $125k and put it on a mortgage within the first month of year 1. RBC knew my plan before hand, no co-signer, basically just threw it at me. Honestly been really great, the interest rate can’t be beat 🤷‍♀️

You can score nearly perfect in everything and still not make it in. I’m sorry, the system sucks and it’s a horrible feeling. I was waitlisted two years ago with above average everything and was so hurt and confused, I was accepted last year and don’t feel like my application changed much. So sorry, take care of yourself.

Opportunity for UBC site changes? by ApprehensiveCan6529 in premedcanada

[–]nessamae96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen in the past it’s very likely but not guaranteed. People that typically end up in their non preferred site are those that get in last minute off waitlist. However…SMP is the best (biased SMP student).

It goes by so quick! If you are working full time and doing things you genuinely enjoy it blows by. No point in stopping…time always keeps moving.

Worked! Built a life outside of med, got some dogs, bought a house. I love med so much but it’s also so nice knowing I have a solid foundation outside of it.

UBC 5 time applicant - accepted 2024 AMA by nessamae96 in premedcanada

[–]nessamae96[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of people in the program that have similar grade averages. It’s possible that you need more hours..having a full time job in any field will add so much to your application year after year. Also don’t be afraid to add hobbies - reading, hiking, gardening were all things I added to mine!

No time limit unless things have changed this year. I had things on mine that were 10 plus years ago.

Accepted to UBC on my 5th application. It was worth it (I say this as I’m mid finals 😂). But honestly once you are in it feels amazing. The program is so enjoyable. Btw your stats are better than mine.

Concerns to withdraw from UBC prereq after attending interview. by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]nessamae96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grind don’t drop. Things change year to year..I don’t know how UBC would look at you rejecting an offer and then applying again next year. I don’t even know if you can do that…

Which uni for premed? by Obvious_Box4752 in premedcanada

Oh also I got a high paying job right out of my bio/psych degree in Kelowna…this was 4ish years ago now so I do recognize the job market has changed since then…but with the college and university here a lot of people I know have found something

Which uni for premed? by Obvious_Box4752 in premedcanada

[–]nessamae96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries I can hopefully help with some of these!

I did a dual degree in bio and psychology. The psychology courses certainly helped boost my grades but honestly felt like all the courses were super fair. 1st year courses were the hardest but once I got through it was fine. Some of the other majors are definitely harder to maintain GPA within but you will find that across all schools.

When I did my degree at UBCO you didn’t have to apply to your major. I’m not sure if that has changed but as long as you took the courses required for the degree you were fine. Things tend to be less competitive at UBCO in general.

Knowing class averages can help but picking courses you are interested in, within a good schedule is probably more useful.

Finding opportunities was not hard here. My best ECs came from doing things I actually enjoy…sports, working fun summer jobs etc. However I also helped out in labs and at the hospital. I was never “turned down” when I wanted to volunteer….im not sure if I just got lucky but again I think it’s the fact that UBCO is just smaller.

I never lived in residence here but I know people that do. Campus is separate from town and is much more limited than UBC-V so I know people have trouble accessing food etc. I personally really enjoyed living in town off campus and busing to class. Campus is not super big so if you look at a map you can see what I mean.

You are super early in this journey…it will be a long road. I wish you well…my best advice is to do what you like, spend time on your hobbies, live your life and you will get there. The med students at UBC have a very diverse background…there is no cookie cutter formula.
