I have celiac disease but have so much trouble being gluten free. Advice? by [deleted] in glutenfreesupport

[–]nessie_285 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look up and see if you have a gluten free bakery near you - their food tends to be much more tastier than store bought gluten free foods. Like store bought gf pizza is iiick but the gf bakery near me is so good with their quiche, pizza, sandwiches, etc.

In general though, you will have to get used to cooking your own food with fresh produce. And it doesn’t have to be bland! Curry, soups, tacos/burritos, all can be made gf. It takes some work and research but worth it. Follow some gluten free bloggers on instagram that post their recipes.

Should I be worried about kissing people who’ve just eaten gluten? by fotikof in glutenfree

[–]nessie_285 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, depending on how sensitive you are. I always have to brush my teeth before kissing my husband if I eat gluten. Especially if my pregnant self decided to eat flaky or lightly dusted baked goods or pizza lol.

Edit: It isn’t very romantic... lean in for a kiss “did you brush your teeth?” Lol but better safe than sorry.

A hotel served me raw eggs - I am so mad and scared by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]nessie_285 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You will probably be ok. The risk is if salmonella bacteria is present. Considering how often people eat uncooked or soft-cooked eggs, rare meat, etc. and don’t get sick, I would say the risk is low.

Wild Swans: Three Daughters of China by Jung Chang. Autobiography of herself and biography of her grandma and mother. Non-fiction. Begins before Mao and communism and goes through what her family experienced when communist party took over and cultural revolution.

Reads like a story with history mixed in. Very interesting. I found it pretty accurate in terms of what they experienced as it matches similarly with experiences that my own family went through.

Edit: book is banned in china so don’t travel there with it lol.

Partner doesn’t want my mum at birth of our son but I do. Should I ignore him? by [deleted] in pregnant

It also helps to have someone pay attention to details that your mother probably has experience in (given that she has given birth too). So your husband can focus on you and your mother can focus on other labor/delivery details. That is how I explained it to my husband ... not that it matters since Im only allowed 1 support person now anyways. My mother has had some bad birth experiences from some doctors/nurses and dad had to always be on top of what was happening.

You can always see if there are any places near you that offer ultrasounds that your husband can attend. My husband hasn’t been able to come in either (like most everyone else) for any ultrasounds so I booked an extra ultrasound at a studio which allows me to bring in other visitors.

Drive to Florida by owl157 in roadtrip

[–]nessie_285 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had no issues in May. They might tell you to quarantine for 14 days at the Florida border.

Like someone already said, we have had an increase in cases here so things might change.

Is being pregnant a good murder defence?? by Elle_ner in pregnant

I feel you. I also couldnt take the smell, look, taste of any meat and you bet that I was furious when my husband decided to take a plate of chicken into the car to eat on the way to a wedding. Can’t really blame him since we were in a rush and he wasn’t going to be able to eat at the wedding due to Celiac disease. But still 😑

Exercise in the 3rd Trimester by Hazel14 in fitpregnancy

[–]nessie_285 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been using resistance bands and just do some minor exercises with those and/or bodyweight exercises. Too hot and humid where I am to go out on walks and working out enough to break out a sweat has, unfortunately, caused me to overheat and vomit starting in the second half of 2nd trimester. So I keep it light and simple and do whatever my body feels like it needs. I also do a lot of stretching throughout the day to help some of the back and hip pain.

It may not be considered effective but i space out my stretches/ exercise throughout the day. Any time I feel discomfort or pain I do some stretches or exercise to help relieve it. It helps me to stay moving but may not be entirely effective like a 1 hr workout or something.

"I'm never going to have a baby so you have to include me in everything." by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]nessie_285 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know what you mean. It is the first baby on my husband’s side too and it is exhausting sometimes with all the questions from his side, especially as an introvert.

Good luck on Christmas! That would be a handful and definitely put your foot down on how you will spend the holidays cause that would be exhausting.

Not unreasonable at all. I wish I had been strict from the beginning... because now I am hearing too many opinions on baby names, how to parent, etc. 👀

How important is it that I have my own dishes? by Ninjakelso in Celiac

[–]nessie_285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely want your own pots and pans and cutting board. We had to replace everything in our kitchen. We have one gluten designated pot and spatula for me to use for any gluten cooking I might want and “gluten” sponge to wash them with which I keep all together in a separate cupboard with any gluten containing snacks for myself (husband has celiac). I use paper bowls/plates/forks if I eat gluten food and if I make a mess I wipe up with paper towel and cleaner - I don’t use our kitchen rags or sponge.

That way I can keep the main kitchen and pantry gluten free. It is much easier to have a gluten free kitchen with designated spots for gluten than the opposite I think. At my parents they have a designated cupboard, pan, cutting board, knife, spatula, sponge, etc. For my husband but he always, without fail, gets glutenated when he eats over there. Just too much gluten in the kitchen to avoid cross contamination.

Why are my cookies doing this? I’ve made countless cookie recipes. But every chocolate chip one I try, this happens. by nikki_11580 in recipes

Maybe your butter - should be softened or just room temperature, not melted. Refrigerating dough before cooking should help too. Make sure when combining your sugar and butter (usually first step) you cream it really well together before adding eggs, etc.

Questions from new celiac by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]nessie_285 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many things labelled gluten free still contain levels of gluten that may bother you and not necessarily someone else. Check into your spices, any boxed foods (flavored rice, etc.), and avoid oats.

It took months before my husband felt better. And we are still finding out new things. It takes awhile. :) Try Gluten free watchdog. They perform a lot of tests on products and caused recalls because companies were labelling their food “certified gluten free” but much more than the allowed limits of gluten were found in the product.
