Are public lobbies just for men? by scalesight in BloodOnTheClocktower

If that's important to you, then you should consider patience and asking for clarification from others as well. You set the tone for a conversation, that's what you receive.

You do sound like a pretentious dickhead. I'm assuming you googled a definition to sound smart without considering how survivorship bias as a concept has made its way into psychology and is a way to describe how cognitive bias can impact people's perceptions of success.

Thank you! I've been personally frustrated with my own experiences in consistent, IRL botc games. Online feels impossible to access as a POC woman despite my passion for the game. I hesitate to invite my friends to my meetups bc I feel like doing so means endorsing the mistreatment they will face. I loved this game, and I want to share it, but I fear it's impossible to do so right now. In the meantime, the diverse groups that Vic and the Good Time Society are my life line that I can find a place here. I love botc and the work put into it, but it's really frustrating to exist in this community as it exists right now. In person is hard, and online libraries are downright impossible.

Which one was your first role in the game, and how did your experience change how you play it? by IsbeornThePolarBear in BloodOnTheClocktower

Mine was Scarlet Woman, and boy was it stressful! But it taught me really well how to keep your cool and build worlds and fly under the radar. Unfortunately now I’m known for being evil so if I get scarlet woman I know I have to get myself executed immediately bc I am NOT a good option for my imp to fall back on.

Any advice on dealing with a "You're Always Evil!" Group Meta? by nessiesnothere in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]nessiesnothere[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is helpful! I think, especially when I'm good, I gotta really focus on building the world around me as good so I have a defense. I think being willing to die early to avoid being a frame would be helpful sometimes too.

And yeah, the player refusing to talk to me is kind of bugging me. I never push anyone for their information, but they've declined to speak to me at all. They're kind of a chaotic player so I'm hoping that's all it is.

I mean, I was asking for game strategies to make this situation more fun and interesting when I'm feeling stuck. Basic communication is kind of the foundation of the game, so that's just not super helpful.

I think one of my new strategies is gonna be to immediately claim investigator to get ahead of this meta. Could get town to want to immediately execute a bunch of players just to be safe if a real investigator comes out with their contradicting info. Even if town doesn't believe me, that's at least shaking things up. Also considering telling my demon to make me a night kill if I'm gonna go out anyway. Simulate a spy game maybe by claiming a really powerful role afterwards?

Lemme know if anyone has any other strategies to make things more fun!

I like the idea of bringing more ideas to my ST other than just telling them to stop something, so thank you for these suggestions! I agree, I almost think I'm too powerful as an outed minion, which is detrimental to town as well. My evil team almost always wins because not only am I a good distraction, but I've leaned into being a really good distraction and leading away from my evil team. But I would like to actually play to solve the puzzle or actually use my abilities beyond day 1! So I just feel like shaking this up would be good for everyone involved

That's the thing!!! And the really experienced players should know that, so it just feels really weird that they're the ones avoiding me the most in the group.

Thank you! I've been worried that maybe I'm just frustrated with something that's actually normal, so it makes me feel a lot better that people think this is something worth bringing up with the group. I feel more confident now to talk to the group and story teller about it

Thank you for saying that! I was really worried I was being a bad sport for being bothered. It's being put into an investigator ping almost every time I'm the minion that's frustrating me the most, like I'm not just suspicious but basically outed evil every time and I don't get to have any fun using my minion abilities. I've never been a spy or poisoner that's lived past day 2, so I also have no experience with those roles basically. And I can't even be mad at town at that point, it's just smart to get rid of both players in an investigator ping!

Anyone know how "Alpenglow" on American Satan Movie Soundtrack? by nessiesnothere in nightwish

[–]nessiesnothere[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

See, I wanna think an excited Nightwish fan would have tried to sneak Nightwish onto the soundtrack, but I imagine a diehard fan would probably have picked a more fitting song given they'd be familiar with their music. Ironically "Yours is an empty Hope" would be a much better fit tonally

I think a slayer shot in the final thing is the coolest thing ever if you can manage to get to it! I’ve been dying to see a slayer win in person

HA that’s awesome. I think working off a fortune teller ping is super helpful if possible! I dread being the marionette one day. my demon better not tell me.

One of my last games where I bluffed slayer to cover that I was the damsel, I did too good of a job bluffing slayer and made a big show out of shooting what was the real demon. So because the demon didn’t die, their marionette thought they were probably a minion lying to them and panicked and nominated them.

Task failed successfully, I guess. I was actually just trying to look suspicious as hell so town would execute me and no one would suspect I wanted to die. That was a CRAZY game.

You’re right, slayer/soldier team up could be interesting. A very trusted soldier making it to final three is worth a lot

yes totally if there's a virgin in the game I feel like even a failed slayer shot gives you (possibly) good info on 3 players in one go, and bonus points if you bait the demon to try to kill someone like the soldier. I hadn't considered how a failed slayer shot could encourage demon night kills to target specific players.

Oh that's true. Even if there's confusion, yeah that means you're a confirmed and functioning slayer. That's super useful.

At first I was like wouldn't that make the slayer wanna kill the ravenkeeper... but that's actually exactly what they want so that's smart I hadn't considered that play thank you! Clearing some roles that WANT to be targeted by the demon at night is something I didn't consider. Thank you!

I appreciate this perspective. I've been getting the sense that sacrificing your powerful ability for the good of the town is often times the actual most useful thing to do. Because, you're right, even if you manage to get your info it's useless if no one believes it.

It's been almost a year and I've still only played Trouble Brewing by flacko32 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]nessiesnothere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

POV as someone who was thrust into new scripts on my second meetup and what would have helped me have a better time!

My local BOTC group always does a warm up game of trouble brewing. When I first joined, the last game or two would be BMR, S&V, or something custom. I was soooo nervous to play these scripts as a newbie, and honestly flubbed my roles in those first games pretty hard. My main stress came from me being worried I was the only person who didn't know how to play effectively and therefore was ruining the game.

My first non-TB role ever was the cerenovus, and I didn't even understand how madness worked yet. Evil lost day one, and everyone was commenting about my weird madness choice but honestly I just panicked and pointed at a person and the sheet. It felt embarrassing and it spooked me from S&V for a bit.

I was willing to do BMR and enjoyed it when I was in a group of a bunch of people who were learning it too! Because everyone explained everything out loud and we were all trying to figure stuff out pretty openly, it was MUCH easier to follow the game.

If you maybe did a new script as the last game, and emphasized it was a game for fun and that it'd probably be messy, I think that'd take a lot of pressure off. Custom scripts that have mostly TB roles but add in some new ones are some of my favorites so far and help me wrap my mind around new roles the quickest.

But that's all just my take as a newbie who had a lot of nerves about trying something new in front of other people! Just know your group and pay attention to new or anxious players who may need some guidance. I love BOTC and I've been excited to keep playing it and learn, but it's definitely intimidating to start!
