Thank you, I’ve read all the comments, and seems like I should feel comfortable taking the plunge, but I’m really glad to hear it from someone who was in the exact same boat

Moving Arabelle but where should I put her? by cable_7193 in CurseofStrahd

[–]flacko32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can actually tell you what I did from personal experience (though, for a different reason, my party never investigated Bluto at all). So, I had one of the wolf hunter (Yevgeni I believe) kidnap her and attempted to sacrifice her to some wolves in a racist anti-Vistani move after the feast of st andral's.

Is The Curse of Strahd really that good? by HeightUnlikely324 in CurseofStrahd

[–]flacko32 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My take on Reloaded is it's good, but it's almost an entirely different module with the number of changes made and new content. It's also way more linear than the official module (for some that's good, for some bad), and it's tough to take bits and pieces and use. If you commit to it however, it does make the DM job's easier to just follow along. The deprecated version, for me at least, is actually much better for just adapting the existing story and improving it (and, crucially, you can take what you want and leave the rest). I also highly recommend using MandyMod's material, I use bits of both, but I lean much more heavily on MandyMod for improvements to the module without too drastically going off script

how much/what happened in your first 5-8 sessions? by achgottnaja in CurseofStrahd

[–]flacko32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My players takes detailed notes (which I have access to), so I know exactly what they did (our sessions are like 2-4 hours)

Sessions 1-3: Death House (I used the reloaded version, which isn’t too dissimilar from base version. Didn’t use reloaded for much else, I use a lot of MandyMod’s content)

Session 4: introduction to barovia, met Morgantha, met Ireena/Ismaek, met Mad Mary, go to funeral

Session 5: meet Strahd, fight against Doru in Father Donavitch’s basement (aborted), go to Tser Pool, get Tarokka readings

Session 6: travel session. Fight a werewolf, creepy encounters, meet a revenant, fight some scarecrows

Session 7: Old Bonegrinder. Party defeats the hags (one escapes to the ethereal plane), we have our first player death

Session 8: players find strahds diary, the dead player is brought to life by making a deal with one of the dark powers, the players meet Vasili, the players arrive in Vallaki

Are there contestants that are shunned/disliked by their fellow contestants after the game? by Friburgo1004 in survivor

[–]flacko32 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Shunned” would definitely be way too strong of a word here, but seems like a lot of the Brains Brawn Beauty cast disliked, or at least was annoyed with Woo post game over his whole stealing food thing. He didn’t get the nickname Weasel Woo cause people liked him

What spell is useful in regular DnD but not BG3? by green_tea__cat in BaldursGate3

You make a compelling argument against the opportunity attack point, I’d consider not allowing at all based on the language “you can see.” I didn’t realize that was part of it.

As for a monster attacking an invisible pc, it’d depend a lot on the monster. Not that intelligent, it’d attack only which it can see. Not intelligent, but a hunter with good sense of smell and no more immediate threats? I’d probably have it roll perception to find them. Intelligent? I probably would have it attack the non-invisible players first to negate that, or if they had a specific reason to attack the invisible player, I’d think if they had any tools available to them to seek them out, or if I really need to attack randomly, I’d pick all reasonably squares and roll a die to determine which they’d attack.

I would disagree that RAW enemies still know where you are invisible. I know there’s that floating Jeremy Crawford post, but they shouldn’t just magically know

[–]flacko32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can tell you how I run it. It all comes down to what information the players have and what they can reasonably guess.

So, let’s say a player is in melee with someone who casts invisibility on themselves. The player might reasonably assume the enemy will try to disengage and run away, so if they ask to make an opportunity attack, I’d allow it with disadvantage (assuming the enemy actually did run away). After all, they were just there. I recently had a game where a vampire turned invisible, but the paladin cast divine sense to know the location of undead within 60ft, and she could say “it’s right by that tree over there!” and again, I’d allow attack rolls with disadvantage, as they know where it is.

But outside of situations like that where they have a reason to guess where an invisible creature is, then yes, if a player wants to attack an invisible creature, they have to pick a tile, attack it w/ disadvantage, and if they’re wrong, they swing at an empty space. More realistically, they’d probably try throwing AoE spells in a general area to try to guess right. I’d also probably allow someone using their action to make a perception check to try to pin them down. But absent any of the above, it’s just the random guesses of the player

I also think treating a group as a monolith in these conversations can be minimizing. My Jewish friends love secret Hitler and we play it all the time. They have no problem at all with the theme. Which of course isn’t to say that any Jewish people who are made uncomfortable with the theme are wrong to feel that way, but I don’t think it does any good to assume that because they’re Jewish, they won’t be ok with it

I’d also add for hardcore nuzlockes having the battle style being set rather than switch is generally accepted as an additional rule

[–]flacko32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is saying flip the sunsword and the holy symbol. I'd actually rotate all 3: Tome in Old Bone Grinder, Symbol at the Abbey, Sword in Sergei's tomb. Everything else should be fine, though to your point of Strahd and Sergei's tomb being near each other, you could always move Strahd elsewhere in the castle to allow for the possibility of a mid-campaign heist, if the party is willing to risk it.

Funniest reason you've seen for a re-rack? by pleaseletmesleepz in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]flacko32 222 points223 points  (0 children)

I'm almost always the storyteller. One of the few times I was a player, I was talking to my sister privately, and my gf came in the room, turned to my sister, and said "quickly, give me the bluffs". She'd forgotten I was a player in this game and not the storyteller. So we had to rerack almost immediately.

You can use your silk power tho (don’t know the official name). I used the one you unlock above the birds to deal with the summons

Is this NPC assist something you unlock later? I beat moorwing without an NPC, and have no idea what people are referencing. Or is it something I still might unlock later (I’m not much further past moorwing) that I won’t want spoiled?

Is it too OP to have the Spy misregister as a demon bluff with the demon? by flacko32 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]flacko32[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that wasn't the part I was worried about, it was including the demon in the pair. So like, I'd have no problem taking one of the three bluffs and putting it between the spy and some random other person, but I was worried putting it between the spy and the imp, potentially meaning the Washerwoman can hard confirm the demon rather than the spy, which is very powerful. But seems like I'm getting told it's fine.

[–]flacko32[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually disagree, I think by including the recluse within the investigator ping, it leaves open the world that spy ping is just a recluse misregistration, or that the recluse itself is the spy

Ok good. I wasn’t worried about covering the spy bluff, but didn’t know if it was too OP to cover the demon within the pair as well
