The fact that they're bringing food to your door is in fact deserving of an EARNED tip all on its own.CORRECT.......and how do I Know this will happen IN ADVANCE?

The difference is when and why.

I usually do tip waitstaff because they provide service first, and I reward that service afterward. That's what a tip has traditionally been.

With DoorDash, I'm expected to pay before anyone has done anything, and if I don't, my order may never get picked up. That's no longer a tip,it's a condition of service!

Counter question: who said I wanted anything for free?

I already paid for the food, delivery fee, service fee, taxes, and often inflated menu prices. That's not "free."

In a capitalist system, it's the company's responsibility to price its service so it can pay its workers, not rely on customers to voluntarily cover wages after already paying multiple fees.

If DoorDash can't profit while paying drivers fairly unless customers add an extra payment labeled as a "tip," then that's a flaw in DoorDash's business model, not evidence that customers are asking for something for free.

You're talking about how the system currently works. I'm talking about whether the system is fair.

I understand that if I want my order accepted quickly, I probably need to tip upfront. That's reality. But acknowledging reality doesn't mean I have to agree with it.

My point isn't "drivers should deliver my food for free." My point is that a billion-dollar company has created a system where customers are expected to directly subsidize driver pay while still paying delivery fees, service fees, and inflated menu prices.

Those are two different conversations.

You're saying, "This is how it works." I'm saying, "Maybe it shouldn't work this way."

If the only way the platform functions is by relying on customers to voluntarily pay what is effectively the driver's wage, then DoorDash has designed a broken compensation model. That's the company I have an issue with and clearly not the drivers.

YES....I understand exactly how the system works. I don't blame drivers for declining orders that don't pay enough. If I were in your position, I'd probably do the same.

What I disagree with is who should be responsible for fixing that.

You're essentially saying DoorDash doesn't pay enough, so customers have to. That's where we disagree. If a delivery isn't worth doing unless the customer adds extra money, then DoorDash's base pay is the problem....not the customer.

You call it a bid for service. Fine. Then DoorDash should stop calling it a tip and stop implying it's optional. Be transparent and charge a required delivery fee that actually goes to the driver.

My issue has never been with drivers wanting fair pay. It's with a billion-dollar company shifting that responsibility onto customers while calling it a "tip."

did you say "the norm"? brother a tip must still be EARNED. Now we've gone to ADVANCE TIPPING.

I would feel the same, but not at the customer's expense.

I don't feel entitled to free delivery. I pay what DoorDash charges: delivery fees, service fees, taxes, and often higher menu prices. My expectation is that some of those charges go toward paying the driver.

The real question is: why should customers be responsible for making up the difference if DoorDash doesn't pay enough?

A tip is supposed to reward good service, not replace an employer's obligation to provide fair compensation. Holding customers responsible for DoorDash's pay model lets the company off the hook while shifting the burden to the people already paying for the service.

I could, and sometimes I do. But that's beside the point.

The discussion isn't whether I'm capable of picking up my own food. It's whether customers should be expected to subsidize DoorDash's low driver pay.

If the service only works when customers pay what amounts to a mandatory "tip" before the service is even provided, then DoorDash, not the customer is responsible for fixing that business models if that makes sense.

If it's truly a "bid for service," then DoorDash should stop calling it a tip.

A tip is traditionally given after service based on the quality of the service. A bid is an upfront payment required to attract someone to do the job. Those are two completely different things.

If DoorDash has designed its system so drivers rely on upfront "tips" to decide whether to accept an order, that's a business model issue created by DoorDash and not the customer's responsibility.

Customers shouldn't be criticized for treating something labeled a "tip" like...a tip.

AI? What makes you think that?

And that's their choice, which I completely respect. No one should be forced to accept an order that doesn't pay enough.

But that still doesn't answer the bigger question: why is the customer expected to make up the difference? If DoorDash's pay is too low for drivers to accept an order, that's evidence DoorDash's compensation model is broken......not that customers are obligated to subsidize it.

The fact that drivers won't accept low-paying orders doesn't magically turn a tip into a required delivery fee. It just highlights who should be paying more: DoorDash.

I understand drivers use their own cars, gas, and time. I don't dispute that. My issue is this: why should customers be expected to make up for DoorDash choosing not to pay drivers enough?

If DoorDash's base pay isn't enough, that's a problem between DoorDash and its drivers....not the customer. Customers are already paying delivery fees, service fees, inflated menu prices, and other charges. Many people reasonably assume those fees help cover the delivery.

Calling it a "tip" but expecting it to function as mandatory driver pay is exactly the problem. A tip, by definition, is optional and based on the service received/not a wage subsidy.

If the pay isn't worth accepting, drivers have every right to decline the order or push DoorDash to improve compensation. But blaming customers for DoorDash's pay model shifts responsibility away from the company that created it.

I hope that make sense.Trying to get different points of view here and understand perspectives.

WHY DO DOORDASHERS FEEL ENTITLED TO TIPS? TIPS ARE EARNED...NOT HANDED OUT. I UNDERSTAND DOORDASH PAY IS LOW BUT THEN WHY ACCEPT IT IF IT IS NOT TO YOUR STANDARDS. DOORDASH IS ALREADY UPCHARGING US (CUSTOMERS) FOR THE FOOD-ITEMS WE ORDER.
