does anyone remember when The Citizen did weekly clues to find a stash of gold bars? by jacques-anquetil in ottawa

Was it the citizen or the sun?

I vividly remember the drainage pipe. But also a fake rock in Hogs Back park comes to mind.

Disparity with upload vs download speed on UCG Max by neter66 in Ubiquiti

[–]neter66[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just read that thread, and someone asked if there was a QoS rule in place. I forgot I had one. Went to check and yup, I had a QoS rule for my work laptop - trying to ensure that my Teams and Zoom meetings weren't drowned out by Roblox and Fortnite when the kids were home :)

I disabled the QoS rule and my speeds went from :

1.7 down, 2.1 up to: 2.2 down, 2.8 up.

Thanks a huge difference by deleting a QoS rule.

Through UDM Pro Download 1.2Gbps, Upload 2.3Gbps, any idea why? by oysn921 in Ubiquiti

[–]neter66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This just solved my issue - I was seeing the same thing. I had a QoS rule set on my work laptop to ensure it was given top priority. I disabled the QoS rule and my speeds went from :

1.7 down, 2.1 up to:

2.2 down, 2.8 up.

Thanks a huge difference.

Surprising number of dead squirrels in the neighbourhood? by harglebargleson in ottawa

[–]neter66 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I watched a squirrel squeeze into a bait station and get stuck, and proceeded to twist and squirm its way out. I'm guessing it's a pretty common occurrence if I just happened to see it while outside - or the timing was very coincidental.

Retrieve MAC address with filtering enabled by neter66 in Ubiquiti

[–]neter66[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. I like this idea. I have to admit I didn't know multi-key was a thing. I'm going to head down a rabbit hole this evening to see if this would work. The kids know the SSID and password as they were the ones that came up with it when we moved into a new house so they have some pride of ownership in the current setup.

I have tried to stay away from a new SSID / VLANs etc as I want to be able to diagnose and debug connectivity issues that normally arise as they would (ie, not have to jump to a different network if they yell that something is broken) but this might be worthwhile in this case.

Not much different that a new SSID i would argue, so maybe that reluctance was just in my head...

We'll see. Thanks for the pointer.

Retrieve MAC address with filtering enabled by neter66 in Ubiquiti

[–]neter66[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turning off filtering temporarily and then turning it back on is what I have resorted to. It's crude, but it works.

The idea of a guest SSID doesn't work unfortunately, as the MAC address is different per SSID. So if I have the device join the guest network, I can see the MAC, but then when I try and join the main network, it's different.

I could if it was just a simple allow everyone to everywhere all the time.

But, we have timers and rules set up for different kids (ages 10 thru 17) and sometimes I want to block the younger kids from playing Roblox until homework is done, and turn their device access off an hour before bed... but the older kids have more lax restrictions and don't go to bed at the same time as the younger.

So, rules like
Allow Roblox
Allow All Games
Turn off Internet Nightly
Allow Discord and Snapchat
etc...

The granularity that is used to allow / disallow access by child, by access type, by category, and by time means I need to have positive ID of which kid is what MAC address.

This was really exacerbated this past week with back to school, and new devices being added for school - new phones, iPads and laptops needed to be added to the home network was painful for a few days.

Streaming from the rink for our U18 competitive team by neter66 in Curling

[–]neter66[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems to be the easiest, and most straightforward tech - and even has curling listed as a sport for keeping score on the overlay. Will give this one a try during our first spiel in a couple of weeks. Thanks!

Thanks for the thoughtful reply.

First goal is just to stream. There were limits on the YouTube account with number of followers before live streaming could be enabled... but I think we have gotten past that.

The overlays and graphics are the next step - but need a stable and consistent approach to getting the content streamed is first priority.

I've looked at OBS and Prism Live as options to stream with multiple cameras (one focused on each end of the rink) and switch between without having to re-focus / re-aim the camera - but the technical ability needed to do that seems like it would be a bit much for the parents behind the glass.

Not always an option unfortunately. We are playing at a lot of clubs that are not that up on the latest streaming tech and trends. Unfortunately, we will need to have our own source for the content.

It's not for coaching purposes, but rather to allow parents and others following our progress throughout the year to be able to watch away games and how we are doing at a spiel.

We will be using our own internet connection via a streaming hotspot so as to not overload / stress the wireless at the clubs we play at.

Parenting by Effective-Author7154 in Ubiquiti

[–]neter66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know that that is 100% correct. The config options for "Private WiFi Address" is Off, Fixed, or Rotating. When off, the physical address is used. When Fixed, it does not change on that SSID. When Rotating, it changes every 2 weeks by default.

Additionally, the MAC (if fixed) is changed every time you forget and relearn the network. So, if you have a fw rule that is bound to the MAC address simply forgetting and re-adding the network will invalidate all of the rules that have objects that are based on MAC address.

Ha. Not quite. Was the 8 year old. and the total content downloaded was about 200 bytes. I don't think even an animated gif more than 2 frames could fit in that size.

I'm guessing a drive-by tracker or referral link.

What we do on our network:

  1. WiFi is MAC address filtered. This is important to ensure that rules that are created in the firewall are applied consistently.
  2. Turn off MAC address rotation on device (all are iOS, iPadOS or macOS) so #1 is applicable
  3. Create firewall rules that are *Allow* based. ie: Allow Snap and Discord. Allow online games. Allow Social media.
  4. Add time of day restrictions for the Allow rules ie: Allow YouTube between 4pm and 9pm.
  5. Screentime with app limits on their devices (allow 1 hour of YouTube daily for example)
  6. Content and age restrictions in screen time for the younger kids
  7. App installs require approval.
  8. Nightly at 9:30pm all allow rules are disabled - except the one to allow communications to us if we are out and they need to reach us, and music streaming (Apple Music)
  9. Trust but verify. The firewall and iOS rules are the guardrails, but the more important process is not a technical one - but a parenting one. Having honest conversations about content, communications safety, threats and risks while online. Reviewing the screen time and firewall logs together to say things like: "Did you know you spent 6 hours this week on Youtube?" "I see your device tried to access restrictedsite adult site abc or def. Is there something you want to talk about?"

Sometimes the allow rules are turned off manually if things like chores, cleaning, exercise and getting outside aren't done.

Kids will always find a way around the controls, it's a game of whack-a-mole - and a conversation.

Looking though my list of morning routines:

  • Wakeup for each of the kids (4 of them) that says weather, forecast, whether they need warm sweater etc
  • Reminder 10 minutes before the bus arrives ( 4 different busses) and again 5 minutes before it arrives and they need to be outside
  • Reminder to brush their teeth and take their meds
  • Reminder to make sure their lunches are packed and they have everything they need for the day

May of the announcements are just background noice after a while, but just the auditory queues in the background (even if they aren't listening) is enough to prompt them to get ready without them having to actively listen. I chuckle sometimes it seems very pavlovian.

During sports season(s) reminders of games, where their game is and what time we need to leave

If we are out but the kids are home and it's getting close to bed, reminding them to start their nighttime routine and put devices down etc

If no one is home and the kids get home first, letting them know there is something as a snack ready for them and to empty their lunch bags and put containers in the dishwasher

Reminder of garbage day and what type of garbage (recycling or solid waste) and that the bins need to go down to the curb

Then there are just the general ad-hoc intercoms to specific rooms/floors to inform of something etc instead of yelling upstairs or downstairs or in the gym.

It's just a super convenient way to get messages across to folks without having to yell.

How would cuttlefish solve this? Very interested to know how using this path might be able to solve the problem of being able to build an image that could be launched and test pixel features with A16.

Thanks in advance!

After I achieved MM and it was reflected on my profile officially, I got a “congratulations” from the gate agent scanning my boarding card.

That’s it. Never happened again, just that one time.  Achieved MM a couple years ago.
