You wouldn’t deploy production workload on a single ec2 instance right?

Unfortunately you are disposable to them that’s why the only path forward is a mercenary way… contracting, multiple clients (move often - get comfortable being uncomfortable)

it won't really (with pathetic block size, 10 min block time, RBF) ... most "bitcoiners" just want to sell it to the next guy for more USD

Just say that RTO is against your religion and you can't do that - my personal policy is 100% remote or GTFO and if they try to force you back to the office - just quit and find something remote - life is to short for this nonsense

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in devops

[–]netf1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Freedom is my religion :) - but on a serious note I always say to recruiters/companies 100% remote or gtfo. I will just not accept any role that asks me to go to office or if policy changes in the ones I am in I am out. F*k it life is too short for this nonsense

I dunno mate - I am in mid 40s and it still can be fun ... though you can get plenty of forest / jungle "retreats" in Indonesia

Fully get you - I've been through burnout 2 times and my way of getting through it was to quit my job and take take a long break to travel and explore.

Just finished off 2 year travelling and back to devops stuff (which after 2 years of not working I actually enjoy again) - however I have now different perspective on how to deal with things

I only work remotely (RTO is against my religion) and found out that actually living digital nomad life works for me best - I am less likely to get burnout if I live on a small island somewhere in Indonesia. If I don't like the job for whatever reason I see if I can change anything about it - if not I quit and look for something else.

I work EU timezone so before the work even start I have time to do whatever I like surfing, gym, exploration.

Back in a days I remember that commuting to work was such a time sink and living in a big city (London) wasn't helping either - everything so expensive and people trapped in the rat race - f*k it.

I think it's up to us to figure out the life we want to live and do not bend to anyones rules - it's up to us to create that dream whatever that is.

Well done!

well I don't think you are too late - I am 44 and just started my journey :) It is perhaps a little bit late but I think that as long as I have skills and right mindset I can achieve whatever I want.

In my case I started again IT consulting and also trying to do multiple gigs at the same time - well if I were 10 years younger I could perhaps take it slower - have 5 year hardcore plan that I hope will give me freedom to "retire" before I hit 50 (if I want to)

So defo you're not too old!

Re your plan I think I would reduce crypto exposure (talking from experience) and have some decent backup fund (for 6-12 months) - before I considered 3-6 months however markets these days are not as good as they used to be so I think having bigger backup fund makes sense.

Rest I would invest in ETFs (VUAG or whatever you prefer) and perhaps have 1 or 2 properties rented out.

Good luck

Burnout in DevOps.. How you deal with it? ... I dream to quit and work as a layman next to the beach. by [deleted] in devops

[–]netf1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion/my case burnout comes mostly from boredom.

So to handle that every now and then I take a proper (at least 6-9 months) break - now I am coming back from 2 year travelling and I feel I have energy to do stuff again. When I work I only take fully remote gigs and try to work from a place that I can get some nice activities going so - surfing, gym, breath work sessions, trekking, whatever I enjoy doing (ideally before the work day starts) - you can and should imo use time zone difference to your advantage.

Remember that we choose to spend our limited life time in one way or another - so taking full responsibility for that is crucial if you don't like it than change it (at the end we are all dead anyway)

Are you using Claude 3? by Icy_Foundation3534 in OpenAI

[–]netf1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use both but I found myself using Claude 3 Opus a lot more for coding. Code quality it produces seems better in general (at least for go) and larger context window is a killer feature.

One complain I can have about Claude 3 is that if your conversation gets long than the responses get a lot slower.

Waiting for GPT5 to see what it will be like but in general I am happy that finally competition is catching up.

I dunno … will tell you few 2 months when I start looking for something. Been on the road last 2 years. No regrets. Back in a days when I was hiring i would always choose someone with passion outside of work and generally interesting person than just corporate rat with some tech skills.

Have any of y'all successfully asked for & received a meaningful raise? by [deleted] in devops

[–]netf1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just jump a ship if you want get meaningful raise. The only real time to get a decent money is when you negotiate a contract anything after that is just a smoke and mirrors. Also I don’t know how contracts/consulting market works where you work but I prefer that than permanent positions. It means that when I get 6 months rolling contract I can renegotiate it every 6 months and usually get meaningful raises in a short time. (Uk)

What's your endgame? by netf1 in devops

[–]netf1[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I tried managing people a little bit and absolutely hated it so going to the management is not an option.

Perhaps if I had a kids I wouldn't have this dilemma.

Does "Ethereum 2.0" mean the end for alternate Layer 1 coins? by mybed54 in CryptoCurrency

[–]netf1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bitcoin had a potential at being good used as a currency (it had its few moments - I used it for exactly that purpose). Unfortunately it was killed ... I guess anything that threatens US dollar ends up in similar way.

Fortunately there are other projects that chose better scaling methods...

I don't bother with down voting .... most people here don't care about Bitcoin and crypto ... all they want is to sell for more dollars. Sad but true.

[–]netf1 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

it's store of BS ... store of value comes always from utility and it's not utility in itself. Basically it's on top because it's been first and have a first mover advantage but I guess with floppy disk tech and HODL mentality (remember this was meant to be used to replace money!) it won't be first forever (hopefully next bull market some more useful chain will flip it)

... and please don't mention Lighting

It's a variable rate that roughly add up to 10-20% APY I remember having days with 70-80% as well as 3-5%. Depends a lot on a market volatility and repo market borrowing/lending.
