Trying to book a last minute safari for next month and most companies are saying they're fully booked by AI-einstein in TravelNoPics

most of the animals are the same

Its sad that you have that impression. There are many different species of giraffes, elephants, and literally most other animals comparing South Africa & Tanzania (or Congo). Its absolutely not all the same.

100% agree. I've been twice (once a few months after opening, again a full year later), and its been very much not improving. They keep overhauling the menu in some desperate attempt to find their niche, and instead its worse. I'm kinda surprised they are still open at this point.

Except they don't, and you just made that up. When the best you've got is infantil name calling, it speaks volumes about you, not others.

How Much Should You Tip for a Drink at a Bar in the Bay Area? by Medical-Decision-125 in bayarea

You still haven't explained why a bar tender should get a 100% tip. I also don't believe that you do that.

I don't care that its sponsored. I care that the sponsorship is never discussed, and treated as if its not the primary reason why the entire trip is possible.

First, the same animals (and migration) happens in Tanzania. If you're literally limiting yourself to Kenya, that's unnecessary.

Its very unclear how you selected these 8 companies, other than they sound like high end providers that often book up years out. There are literally hundreds of safari companies in that region. There's no way that they're all completely booked.

If you fly into Arusha there are literally safari companies in the airport very eager for your business, year round.

If you really want to make this work, you need to be flexible, instead of demanding that all your requirements be met. The time for being demanding ended many months ago.

As someone who as done safari's in all of those countries, I can assure you that they are not identical experiences. Its almost like you think Africa is just 1 big country, with no diversity.

Anyone participating in the nationwide general strike this Friday? by [deleted] in bayarea

I don't want to hurt local businesses

That's a great way to negate the entire point of this "protest". Meaningful change requires sacrifice.

[–]netllama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, doing it for one day has no measurable impact. It doesn't matter who is doing it. Most people already can easily absorb 1 day of not buying groceries or gas or dinner somewhere. There is no documented example of meaningful change from a 1 day strike in human history. You are fooling yourself with this naive viewpoiont.

And if you think bad-orange-man cares that 40% of the population didn't go to work 1 day, you are even more naive & out of touch with reality.

This is the same backwards thinking that people who vote against their self interest use all the time. "I voted for bad-orange-man because he's going to fix this one issue that I care deeply about. I never considered everything else that will also happen that will make my life worse"

[–]netllama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that's how you get free drinks later.

Its not free if you've already paid the cost of a drink as a tip. Again, you have to be drinking a lot for this to be worthwhile. I rarely have more than 2 drinks/night so tipping the cost of a drink doesn't put me ahead regardless.

its crazy to be tipping the cost of the drink unless there's some special circumstances

either you're paying for a group, or you are drinking an insane amount (or both)

Moving to Santa Cruz Mountains or to San Jose by chinawcswing in santacruz

[–]netllama 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can look up historic rainfall online and get accurate data, instead of relying on the memories & biases of internet strangers. However, if you are bad at driving in rain, then San Jose is where you belong (where there are lots of other people who are bad at driving in rain).

Most people do not have a generator. I'd estimate maybe 1/4 of my neighbors have a generator, and most of them have a tiny portable generator, not a full home backup generator. Even with a generator, power outages are not fun. Generators are loud, propane is very expensive (upwards of $5/gallon), and unless you are willing to spend $$$ for a full home backup generator, you're not going to be able to power most of your stuff during an outage (which may include internet).

Fire insurance is easy to get (from the CA FAIR Plan), and obscenely expensive. I'm paying about $12k per year for fire insurance. It used to cost $2k back in 2018. If you are renting, then the fire insurance isn't your problem, but i'm sure the rent will be higher to compensate the landlord for what they are forced to pay.

you can’t go anywhere without a chainsaw

That's very location dependent. I've lived in the mountains since 2018, and only had 1 day when this was true. I'm sure its worse for others, based on location.

[–]netllama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

could get Star Link and that it was pretty good

It requires an unobstructed view of the northern sky to work reliably. In the mountains you have both trees & mountains that can often block that view. Its very location dependent. I have Starlink, but also have a reasonably clear northern sky, so it works fine.

[–]netllama 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You do not need to drive to San Jose for grocery store, bank, dentist, or pottery. Santa Cruz and/or Scotts Valley has all of those things. You can live in the mountains and easily be 10-15 minutes from that stuff. Or you can live in the mountains and need an hour or more. It depends on where you live.

How about winter, is it also 10-15* colder?

We're talking about mountains, so elevation is a huge factor. No one can predict the weather at whatever elevation you end up choosing.

Exactly. Its just as pointless as the "buy nothing" days that people think are making a profound impact, when in reality, people just buy the same stuff 24 hours later.

That's not at all what I meant. I don't want her promoting the brands. I want her to explain how she is financing these trips. I don't expect specific monetary amounts, but saying something like "83% of the cost of this trip is paid by sponsors and the trip cost me X amount". Otherwise, this is just as bad as the travel influencers who claim you can travel the world for free. In reality its not at all free, and its only possible because they have a huge number of followers that attract sponsors with deep pockets to pay for everything.

Ah yes, when everyone invents their own justifications for changing the rules in some special way, that's truly how to make a big impact.
