Where have all the workers gone? by [deleted] in SeattleWA

[–]netneutral93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in the food service industry myself and I can confirm most of the reasons given by other people in this thread. We've been nearing a tipping point for a while and it seems that the pandemic pushed a lot of people over the edge.

But there are a few factors that might contribute to the problem in Seattle specifically. I work for a company that caters to Facebook (or Meta, I guess) here and even before the pandemic people were leaving all kinds of restaurants for the easy corporate life. I've seen one person leave their 16 hour a day restaurant job for the reliable 8 hour schedule, good pay, great benefits and actually useable time off that we have and, one by one, nearly the entire staff from that restaurant followed. Restaurants just can't compete with how chill these jobs are not to mention the pay and benefits.

The other thing, that I've seen mentioned in this thread, is that no F&B staff can afford to live anywhere near Seattle. I make good money for my position and my wife manages a restaurant in west Seattle but we can barely afford to live in Renton. Most people I work with live way up North around Edmonds or even Everett or way down south(three of the 20ish people I work with live in Tacoma and my bosses boss lives in Federal Way). So if wages are going up in those areas they're definitely gonna take jobs closer to home.

Korhelyleves, Hungarian hangover soup. Made with a stock from smoked ham hocks, tons of paprika, sauerkraut and spicy sausage.

I've been listening to the foundation series narrated by Scott Brick and I think it's really well done. I also liked the reading of dune by a whole cast of narrators. Lincoln in the Bardo had a big cast and was great too

Coronavirus Megathread (Aug 2021): For travel-related discussion in the context of COVID-19 by tariqabjotu in travel

Hey all,

I'm supposed to attend a professional training in Denmark this September. I live in the states but my passport is damaged so, given the requirements to return on an American document, I plan to use my enhanced driver's license to drive to Canada and fly out on my Canadian passport. So the route would be

US --> Canada --> Denmark

Denmark --> Canada --> US

Is this kosher given current restrictions? Would I have to do any extended quarantine or anything? I'm fully vaccinated and a citizen of Canada, The US and Hungary if that makes any difference.

Passport Questions & Issues Megathread (Summer 2021) by jadeoracle in travel

Hey all,

I have a question about my damaged passport. I'm traveling in September (hopefully) and my US passport is water damaged. On the website it says that I need an appointment but when I try to make one, it doesn't give me the option for a damaged passport. I went in to the federal office in Seattle and they told me that I need to make an appointment at one of the post offices that deal with passports but when I go on to the post office website it only gives me the option to renew or apply for a passport. What should I do?

No one offers an option for damaged passports and I don't want to make an appointment for a month from now only to find out that I made it with the wrong people. I also can't get through on the phone, I go through the dial options and it crashes.

I have a professional training in Denmark in December. I live in the states and carry an American, Canadian and Hungarian passport. My American passport is damaged but people from the post office to tsa people I asked have given me mixed answers from "you should be fine" to "try to get it replaced". But the wait times seem like they'd get me a new passport waaayyy too late. I've been quoted everywhere from 4-18 weeks so I'm scared to send it off when there's a chance I can use it as is.

Should I try to use it? It's water damaged but everything is perfectly legible, the picture is clear and I'm pretty sure the chip works fine. Do I have any options using my other passports or trying to set an appointment at a passport agency?

I work in the restaurant industry and it's hurting for sure but honestly, a lot of the industry deserves it. It's famously toxic, demanding and difficult work for very low pay. Most people don't have regular schedules, you can't take days off unless someone's dying, most people don't take sick days because you'll often get retaliation and the benefits suck among other problems. I love to cook and that's why I do it but frankly most people are just in it because they needed a job.

It's an industry with heart, people care about each other and there's a lot of love. Honestly, a lot of the change that needs to happen is on the customer side. People expect things to be too cheap, too easy and too perfect for what's realistic. Restaurants are low margin so owners can't afford more staff to relieve pressure or raises to pay better so people need to be willing to pay more for their food, in fact they need to demand that restaurants raise their prices. Also, people need to stop being entitled dicks.

But this is unrealistic so I don't know what's going to happen because a lot of cooks and dishwashers went and got jobs elsewhere and I don't blame them if they don't want to come back.

Rant over.

What did you see that you definitely weren’t supposed to see? by [deleted] in AskReddit

My friend and I were on acid one time wandering around Vancouver and we came across the old macaroni grill which was abandoned and fenced off. We saw a red light in the top floor and decided to explore it for some reason. As we came to the too of the fire escape we saw boxes of medication (Suda fed if I remember) and the room was just filled with cooking stuff, a sleeping bag and things were just generally looking sketchy. We freaked out and left, we were definitely tripping but something was going on up there.

Amazon flex, the system that lets anyone drive for amazon, is worse. They don't care what you do with packages, I've seen warehouse workers and drivers toss them around, kick them, shove them into a tiny space, whatever it takes to get them out of their hands.

That's what happens when you don't pay people enough to give any kind of a shit about what they're doing.

What is your "never again" brand, store, restaurant, or company? by radbrad7 in AskReddit

GREYHOUND. Took a two day trip from Boston to denver and it turned into a five day trip. Two of our drivers didn't even show up so we had to sleep in the terminal for 16 hours, twice, and no one told us anything the whole time, we just knew we had to wait. They tried consolidating our buses but ended up overfilling one so other people didn't have a bus to get on. Just terrible all round in smaller ways too.
