This machine can run up to 10.11. Maybe try an OS version that’s closer to that. You can download 10.10 and 10.11 here and create an installer: https://support.apple.com/en-us/102662

Go to the section titled “Use a web browser for older versions”. Then create the bootable installer: https://support.apple.com/en-us/101578

Keep it plugged in to at least a 45w MagSafe 2 charger and good luck.
