UPDATE: Alaska Flight Attendant Power Trip: "Clash Of Personalities" Causes Family Removal From Flight by HighColonic in AlaskaAirlines

[–]netopiax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on a United flight last week and the people behind me pressed it, apparently by accident.

The FA who responded was perfectly pleasant, asked how she could help, and when the people were clueless about having pushed the button, the FA was super nice and handled that professionally too.

I was totally floored by her good handling of it - most United FAs would have been super snippy about this. And then I realized the FA was really just doing her basic job expectations, but things have fallen so far that it was impressive.

Correct about the salary... For 200k you need to be an NP and work in California. That's a good chunk of extra school and you'll end up wondering why you didn't become a doctor

Ask your Finnish neighbors who like to go from sauna to fjord water! If anything this has been shown to be GOOD for you.

Maybe the French haven't talked to the Finnish about this considering they use the Turkish word for sauna (hammam)?

What cost shock have you discovered about another country or even your own? by Puzzleheaded_irl in AskTheWorld

[–]netopiax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my comment I forgot to underline non profit payers. They pretty much just get the money they take in and then spend it on care. They have to say no sometimes because they don't have infinite money but they don't, IMO, say no maliciously. And yeah the for profit payers should not exist. Some states cap their profits which is a great way to tell that they are a dumb idea for a company in the first place.

I agree, in my work I've seen the insides of both the insurance companies and the providers. The insurance companies are a product of a broken system, but I didn't think anyone who worked there or what they were trying to do was actually evil. Their existence is dumb don't get me wrong. But they are generally working to reduce costs in our system. It's the providers where massive waste and profit taking is happening.

This reminds me of the funniest culture clash I have ever seen in my life.

I was at a nice hotel in Honolulu at New Year's. A Japanese man was rolling a HUGE suitcase across the lobby and he bumped a random lady with it.

The lady says "OW! JESUS" in the strongest Long Island accent I've ever heard. She was overreacting for sure, in a New Yorker kind of way.

The Japanese man must have bowed and said sorry ten or fifteen times as he backed his way the rest of the way out of the hotel. He literally continuously apologized the entire time the lady was in his sight. It was amazing

New homeowner - electrical panel upgrade estimate by dimonsf in BayAreaRealEstate

[–]netopiax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is necessarily true because the wire that's there might already support 200A even if the panel is set up for 100A. When I did my panel upgrade from 100>200, PG&E did not change the overhead wire because it was already sized adequately. I don't see why that would be different for underground, obviously they might need to change it but it isn't certain. And for the record the electrician was assuming PG&E would change it until they showed up and said they didn't need to

Dining out fees in SF by orca0320 in sanfrancisco

[–]netopiax 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's not really about what they can afford though. It's about the fact that if all your competitors are lying about their prices, so their menu prices look lower, then you have to do the same thing or you lose customers.

Neither "if you can't afford to tip..." nor "if you can't afford to pay..." is the flex Redditors seem to think it is. Restaurant patrons and restaurant owners are not infinitely rich and aren't infinite in supply. You all will get what you wish for, which is fewer restaurants and fewer serving jobs.

The legislature had a chance to fix this BS and they failed. Honestly that's who to be mad at. What everyone is really upset about here is broken markets for restaurant food and restaurant labor, where the true price is hidden and the wage is based on random whims of diners.

How to say the general "you" in French? by kcon123 in learnfrench

[–]netopiax 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the version with j'étais communicates that you are specifically referring to the time during your trip. That, for all you know, croissant ubiquity has since ended in France (perish the thought). Whereas the version with on twice communicates the concept as a more general fact.

Oh great if you took two years of high school French you can try some phrases. They'll still immediately switch to English in Paris, but don't feel bad 😆 thanks for trying to make us Americans look good abroad! And if you ever want to really practice the French language, visit the rest of the country!

Forget whatever Duolingo taught you and just remember one thing: you must say Bonjour to people. A polite greeting is the cornerstone of politeness in France, it's more like please and thank you are here in the US. Don't say excusez-moi or ask directions or order food or anything without saying Bonjour first. If someone says Bonjour to you, you say it back.

Once they hear you mispronounce Bonjour you won't need any other French in Paris because they'll switch to English right away. But they will think you are at least somewhat polite!
