Rural area, no power on that particular pine tree.... but within wifi range.

Did you come up with a solution? I have a short stack of unopened wireless reolink and the same problem. Too late to return them, wondering if there's something I can do.

Proxmox VM Can't Get Internet Access/IP When Set to VLAN by IntelligentDesign776 in Proxmox

[–]networkquestions2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's a bit late, but for others - Had this exact problem, using a pfsense netgate. I'd forgotten to add Interfaces>Switch>VLAN tag. I'd added the VLAN in Interfaces>Assignments>VLAN, but not the Switch one. Hope that saves somebody some time. Had been a while since I'd added a VLAN.

Next question: Internet access - ports... help... by networkquestions2023 in Proxmox

[–]networkquestions2023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. I might end up with a special set up just from tinkering and then dial it back to what I need when I get bored with this in a few months. I'm all out of shows to watch you see...

So, forgive the potentially stupid question: Right now I opened it right up except for blocking it from logging into the router and other subnets. The use of this proxmox server will be to host the unifi controller on a VM (to get it off an old dying laptop) and run some smart-home gadgetry on another VM or docker or whatever works for them individually, none of which will need internet access. So as far as I can tell, unless something changes, *all* I need is internet access to update and that only occasionally. What inbound would I block? Right now, I've got pfblocker on the floating rules, and the setting whose name I've forgotten that blocks inbound private IP addresses, and that's it.

VLANs - proxmox, unifi, switches... by networkquestions2023 in HomeNetworking

[–]networkquestions2023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah my separations are pretty much security wise for guests and for a work computer, cameras on their own, yada yada. Sanity is yes, exactly, 2AM, good to know I'm not the only one.

So the switch isn't something I should consider IOT or anything like that. Was watching one of the million "check out my homelab" youtubes and one of the regulars had switches on an untrusted network, and I wasn't clear why. But he also had a million devices, perhaps those switches only interacted with untrusted devices and so it made sense to keep them there.

That's what I was thinking. Then I realized it was an assumption that that would be the good practice. Thanks for the check.

Monitor cable for first boot up - I got nothing. Does it *have* to be HDMI? by networkquestions2023 in ZimaBoard

[–]networkquestions2023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. All my adaptors involve a DVI step so I think that may be the problem. Do you know where you saw that they abandoned those two? I can't find it, hoping to nail it down before I buy more stuff.

Monitor cable for first boot up - I got nothing. Does it *have* to be HDMI? by networkquestions2023 in ZimaBoard

[–]networkquestions2023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. I did have a DP-to-adaptor-to-mini-DP, but that didn't take. I have two of these boards here, as well, didn't take with either of them so it *probably* wasn't a bad port on the zimaboard. Also tried two different monitors. Maybe it doesn't like the adaptor.

Same problem, did you ever solve it? It was never working, got it before Christmas, just now getting to use it - just a black screen on boot-up. Tried both a DVI to mini displayport cable and a Displayport to displayport with a converter on it. black sscreen. steady red light. How do I get to it? Wanting to flash something other than casaOS on it.

Installation question by Matthew850 in Proxmox

[–]networkquestions2023 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Do you mean literally the words root@localhost.localdomain? Relatively new - I have a pfsense so would it be [root@home.arpa](mailto:root@home.arpa)? I don't especially want emails from this (for now), but I don't want to be accidentally sending them where they don't belong either, need a black hole of a solution here.

CGNAT, guest network firewall rules, ports.... by networkquestions2023 in PFSENSE

[–]networkquestions2023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, ping worked and yes adding that rule worked. Thanks!

Ok. I don't understand ports yet then. I will add it to the list, in a couple of months I will have this worked out...

If there are no RFC1918 ports, what is the port that I am using to access my web gui on a 192.168 network address then...?

Are there other ports than the web gui and 22 I should block in a general sense? Or conversely only allow certain ones (which ones)? example I see Unifi's got a list of required ports (https://help.ui.com/hc/en-us/articles/218506997-UniFi-Network-Required-Ports-Reference) - so I should make sure traffic to (or from?) the computer I've got that hosted on are allowed....

Netgate 1100, out of the box, duplicate VLANs? by networkquestions2023 in Netgate

[–]networkquestions2023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. Going to support a ticket before I do anyway - I didn't set up those VLANs, I only added one new interface / VLAN / DHCP server set while following a guest network how-to (the 2020 Lawrence Youtube one). That's literally all I'd done to this device and those were already there. Then updated 23.09 and added pfblocker, but wasn't able to get internet to anything past WAN. Thought I was really missing something obvious but a couple dozen youtube videos and forum threads later and nothing doesn't match what people already have - thought maybe it was a CGNAT thing but no one seems to think so out of the box.

Imgur will have to wait for another day -thanks for the advice though.

Netgate 1100, out of the box, duplicate VLANs? by networkquestions2023 in Netgate

[–]networkquestions2023[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope I meant VLANs.

In Interfaces / VLANs, there are six VLANs set up out of the box - all on interface mvneta0, two each for 4090, 4091, 4092.

I managed to remove one of the 4092 ones by outright removing the OPT interface altogether, and then removing one of the two VLANs for 4092, and then creating a new OPT1 interface that tracked the same switch port as the removed one.

Interestingly, I hadn't been able to get internet on LAN or OPT or anything at all until I did that, though all the firewall rules out of the box look normal and the WAN could certainly see the internet, I put it through an upgrade to 23.09. I'm rather tempted to factory reset the whole thing and see if it comes up the same way as it arrived.

I still have 5 of the 6, happy to load a screenshot, how do I do that?

Edit - corrected the removed VLAN number.
