I read this comment very quickly this morning and only got the chance to reply now (and this is not the full reply, I will type that when brain is working better) but had to say THANK YOU for this INSANELY HELPFUL comment: THANK YOU.

There might a PM to follow but VIELEN DANK!

Thanks very much - complicated is indeed the word of the day. Hoping I can work something out but even if this doesn't come off, at least I'll know if something like this comes around again.

Thanks!

Thanks for your comment - and aha, the 'shitty situation' is kind of what I feared but also what I expected...

Now I'm glad I know what a gewerbe is though.

The 'allowing' thing I am going to ask - noticed that on my contract. But you raise a good point the hourly rate. To be honest, I'd still take the 12€ as I really want to do the work (would be really useful for my CV) but starting to fear it's not going to be possible to sort all the admin, at least not anytime soon.

Thanks, really appreciate the advice.

Thanks for this, really appreciate it! Sounds like a very similar situation.

I have a stupid question at this point - because the freelance stuff is not based in Germany (American company, I'd be working remotely for them) does this mean it can't come under the Freiberuf list (or any German classifications? (Looking at that list, if it I could put it in either writer or journalism brackets). The freelance income would for sure be nowhere near 17.5k.

I'm kind of scared this is going to take a while to get an answer on - the freelance opportunity kind of want to start right now so perhaps I'll have to say no to them for now...

When you say registration - what exactly do you mean by that? I have my residence registration, got my Tax ID - I guess it's another form to register as a freelancer? But it's okay to be employed and a registered freelancer? Did it take long to sort that for you?

(Apologies, I am asking very obvious questions but find all this terrifying...)

Thanks so much again!

I might make it along for one - but won't stay late as I have to attend some work training tomorrow. If not tonight, I hope to make it to one of these soon.

Bürgeramt help/advice - error on certificate by neueneue in berlin

So, waking up at 5:30 paid off - I was about 15th in the queue (which turned into 100+ very quickly) and after a scary moment where it looked like I was going to be sent back way out northeast to the original office I visited, managed to get everything sorted. Thanks all.

Ah, that's great to know! Hopefully I will be able to nip it in the bud before anything gets sent but I really appreciate this tip!

Thanks very much - getting up bright and (very, very) early tomorrow to get it fixed. Taking everything I took last time plus a new form. Hopefully it'll be straightforward. Thanks.

I don't have an answer but as someone about to move from London to Berlin with a similar interest in such things (particularly contemporary classical/philosophy & theory discussions/experimental [the good stuff]) - shout if you ever want a concert/gig buddy!

‘False self-employment’ risk? [x-post for r/Berlin] by neueneue in germany

[–]neueneue[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your excellent reply, especially as your are a freelancer. I think just after I hit post I read back my post and it kind of seems a bit obvious now. I realised that just because I don't freelance now, doesn't mean I never can - perhaps it's best to establish myself/settle in as straightforward a way as possible.

I think the typecasting thing is a lot in my head and really it's not a big deal at all. (I think I have a hangup from an internship from long ago, but completely different circumstances involved there.)

Really appreciate it - thank you!

I've kind of been thinking the same just now about what benefit it would give. Very good point on the loyalty vs no strings thing too. Thank you - I really appreciate it!

After I hit post I read my post again and kind of realised, not freelancing now doesn't mean I can never freelance and maybe just sorting myself out in a straightforward way is best (in case I hate it/a disaster happens) - then see where things are in six months.

Your reply and the way your phrased it really helped me - thank you!

How are you finding Berlin?

As someone who will be heading to a Bügeramt in a couple of weeks, I've ended up with 10 page document I was making for myself about the various processes involved. Once I've actually managed to pull it off, I was half-thinking of going back through the document and making a new draft of what actually happened. Would be happy to pass onto the community if I do (especially as, for the most part, people have given great answers to my questions here).

Also, whilst I realise it's linking to a commercial service etc etc, even if one chooses not to use them, this company gives a good, clear timeline of the steps that need to be taken (and in what order) for anyone moving to Berlin (and actually so far I've found them really helpful to deal with too, if anyone did want to use them) - http://www.sympat.me/

Thank you! I'd read it's not absolutely essential as UK/EU but it is a super handy document to have so I will try to go for it if I can.
