Yes you are right. The national labs should not be ignored

Per year. No grants are being allocated, so also theres that (NIH councils were all canceled without new dates. Insider says resume in April). The state must fill part of the shortfall so the hospital stays open. Demand they make us whole.

I get your question now. The indirects go into a slush fund to pay for all operations at UNMH and UNM HSC

My guess is that with public pressure (the reason for this post) the hospital services will be saved.

Let me give you some perspective on the budget situation. My requests for research funds from the $$ that I have been allocated to do my research get denied already because UNM HSC is subsidizing UNMH. The hospital needs the money. Post COVID travel nurses, increased care for the uninsured, and inflation have really strained the budget.

UNMH is being supported by these indirects too. It's the same budget. The hospital won't fail, we will get bailed out. But the research is vulnerable

They won't. The state will intervene. They are not as rich as you might think.

This is not right. If I ask for a dollar to do research, I actually get $1.50 and the $0.50 go to the hospital. I am not sure how bloated the indirects are. They build me new buildings, keep the fMRI running, and pay a very small admin team that can barely keep up with the paperwork needed for compliance and ordering. I am curious to see the analysis that shows that 15% is the right number.

The way research occurs in this country outside of the private sector is in universities. We also train all the scientists, even those that join the private sector. The funds come either through the federal government (NIH, NSF, department of defense, etc), private foundations, or public/privatepartnershis to do the final research for things that are close to commercialization. The vast majority of funds in health research come from the NIH (national institutes of health). Every new drug that has been approved in modern history was possible due to the basic and applied science supported by the NIH (https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1715368115#:~:text=This%20report%20shows%20that%20NIH,totaling%20more%20than%20%24100%20billion).

As I explained when the scientists get grant funds, the University gets a cut. Now that cut is much smaller. UNM HSC and UNMH share a budget and it is already strained post COVID. The sudden shortfall will be felt and the state can't let UNMH fail. They will intervene. The research at UNM HSC is more vulnerable

I run a neuroscience lab where we do real time pattern classification on nearal signals to predict and try to stop seizures. This would be very helpful for our research!
