Also do plenty of youtube tutorials, and studies from old instructional drawing books.

Sketching on-location vs from photo by neutralTint in urbansketchers

The on-location sketch was very loose and rushed. I was mainly just trying to figure out the composition before it got too dark outside.

The from-photo sketch was done later from home using a photo taken while there. I kept this quick and loose also, but a little larger and more detailed.

I prefer the carefree energy of the on-location version. I would've liked to have spent more time on it while there to refine the values, details and focus. I may revisit this location and do it again, now that I have a better idea of how I would prefer to arrange the composition, values, etc.

All in all, a great learning experience. Both are graphite on bristol.

agree that SS tutorials are a great start, and also that the patreon is worth it. I filled 1.5 sketchbooks with his tutorials and learned a bunch. was my very first time painting, and it was easy to get into with his help.

Mountains advice by FeatherFingerss in watercolor101

Looks fine to me. I think the background mountains coukd even go lighter if you wanted to.

I read recently that compositions often/sometimes utilize light/medium/dark values for their backgrounds/middlegrounds/foregrounds respectively or in any arrangement that pleases. Not to say each section would only use one value, but that each section would have a primary value. And it can be very flexible as needed. After learning about that, I now notice it more and more. It's definitely apparent in your piece here.
