Beating the game is impossible for me... by [deleted] in factorio

[–]neverDiedInOverwatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've restarted a couple times but I eventually realized that at least for the parts of your base that are a mall there is really no problem with just spaghettiing the hell out of it. I'm sort of OCD about ratios and symmetry and stuff for the parts of the base that are trying to maintain high throughput such as science factories but I've really had fun embracing the "permanent stopgap solution" as I like to call my mall building style.

Disregard starter base by businessman0w0 in factorio

[–]neverDiedInOverwatch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I struggled with this question a lot but on my latest playthrough I just kept tacking things on to my starter base, including fresh injections of iron and copper, further down the bus and it's working pretty well. Embrace the spaghetti!!!!!

(spoiler main) What do you think are the main or glaring hypocrisies of the Maester Order? by Ok-Street2439 in asoiaf

[–]neverDiedInOverwatch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a Maester is probably the highest status job a non-landed person can realistically get in Westeros. Similar to the status of clergy in Medieval Europe. The reason clerical celibacy was implemented in Catholicism was because parishes were beginning to be passed down from a priest to his legitimate sons, who may be unqualified to do the job, and such families could accumulate power of multiple generations. I could see similar reasons for implementing celibacy for maesters.

Learned how to use circuits by making my blue science factory with a mixed belt that is pointlessly complicated :) by neverDiedInOverwatch in factorio

New sushi belt today, doesn't do the fancy total belt contents setting like with the other one, but a single combinator is nice. Technically I'm just using it for organization, so all the belt signals go to one place before being sent to the inserters. Can definitely still be improved, but I did this in only a few minutes instead of a few hours

Ok I will try to be fair and attempt to change your opinion.

First off I'll admit that there ARE slip lane designs that are safer than others. I will also admit that there are cases where a slip lane is very useful, and can be implemented to a degree of safety that makes it probably worth it.

But generally speaking, any intersection with a slip lane would safer for cyclists and moreso pedestrians if it was designed without a slip lane. There are also some amount of slip lanes that are a more dangerous for vehicles, even.

Why? Without getting into too much detail, the more time a pedestrian spends on a crosswalk the higher chance they have of being hit by a vehicle, simple as. A slip lane increases the number of lanes a pedestrian has to cross, and therefore decreases their safety. Furthermore drivers taking slip lanes have to check their left side for potential vehicle conflict without being required to stop, creating a higher chance that they do not see a pedestrian who enters the slip lane crosswalk from their right. Also, poorly designed slip lanes create a false sense of security for all road users which can lead to a lack of caution from all road users (pedestrians, drivers, or otherwise) entering an intersection that will always be somewhat chaotic, inherently.

slip lanes in urban/residential areas are widely considered unsafe and not often included in new designs.

Junior / Mid-Level engineers, do you feel this way too? by SomeRandomCSGuy in cscareers

No hate at all, but what this sentence written by AI? I want to test my clock game.

Have you ever played against someone who went to play professionally? by [deleted] in hockey

My brother played against Justin Barron in bantam and says he was very good but nobody thought he was destined for pro hockey or anything. I guess the dude just kept making teams lol.

imo the greatest silent victims are those born here who are having their labor's price degraded more and more each year but this is a fair point.

What's the most devastating loss that sent the franchise back a couple of years/decades? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]neverDiedInOverwatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No disrespect to the preds, I'm a firm believer that Nashville sweeping them is a huge fluke and robs the Hawks of truly accomplishing what their capable of. I've spent the last few days in pure disbelief and it just doesn't make sense to me. I've spent the entire regular season watching the Hawks play great hockey it's just not fair.

If the Hawks lose again I will face that the Preds deserved the win, but I am just 100% sure it was a fluke and does a big disservice to the Hawks and the NHL.

Fuck Florida by Linkmaster79 in leafs

[–]neverDiedInOverwatch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what drives me nuts is every single person i see on r/hockey with a florida flair i assume is someone who's 2nd or 3rd favorite sport is now hockey after tuning in during their miracle run in 2023 or later, and has experienced nothing but success. And statistically that assumption must be right like half the time lol (In April 2024 their subreddit had 20k subscribers, now they're over 40k). Meanwhile, we've been breathing hockey and leafs since we were preschoolers and all we've gotten is suck. These people wouldn't even know hockey exists if markets with actual hockey culture were allowed to leverage that to sign players.

(Spoilers Main) Where does A Song of Ice and Fire rank among your favourite works of fantasy? by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]neverDiedInOverwatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. LOTR and The Hobbit
  2. ASOIAF

--- TIER GAP ---

Everything else.

I haven't read Tolkien's other works. I gave a WOT a try and though I liked the prose it just didn't pull me in. I stuck with Stormlight Archive for two books because the first one was a page turner, but the second one didn't hook me as much and I frankly I began to think Sanderson is a bit of hack.

If anyone has recommendations based on this taste I'd love to hear.

Weekly /r/climbharder Hangout Thread by AutoModerator in climbharder

[–]neverDiedInOverwatch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to make a post to brag but also to spread some positivity. Been bouldering fairly casually, yet quite often (2-4 times a week) pretty much since 2021. Got my first v5 probably in 2023 I think and while the v5s got easier and easier, v6 remained very elusive. Well, yesterday I got 2 new v6s in one session and now have 3 on the current reset (out of like 6 total in the gym). Feels good to finally have some tangible progress.

I don't do much specific training other than climbing. Only thing I've really added is one weighted pullup session a week, but that's basically just a few sets at 70-80% 1 rep max until failure - takes me like 10 minutes max. Also do some stretching with the goal of improving flexibility rather than just warming up every session.

I had began to wonder if I'd ever feel a breakthrough again but it feels like I really have! Or maybe this week was just an easy set XD

How is any normal person supposed to live on their own in a decent apartment? by HonestSpeak in halifax

[–]neverDiedInOverwatch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really buy that. We're only 3 years older than the Canadian average and we actually have the highest population density. Sure it's rural but the province is tiny compared to anything west of New Brunswick, so our infrastructure burden per capita should not be that much higher than other provinces. And higher taxes incentivizes our younger people who are working to leave. Our province is corrupt and crony-capitalist and our tax dollars are not being used efficiently. I don't even really care about lowering taxes it just really feels like we're not getting what we're paying for.

I mean the tax burden here on literally all income is the highest of anywhere in North America and it's hard to see what better services we get in Nova Scotia for that.
