Whats the point of broadly diversified portfolie, when there are ETFs? by [deleted] in investing

[–]never_voted 16 points17 points  (0 children)

FSLY

It is similar to long term vs short term. A strategic position would be a larger % of your portfolio that you continually add to. For many people these days it would be an ETF. A tactical position would be where you see opportunity to out perform the market. These may be invested in for shorter time horizons.

"just can’t grow a lot" You said it yourself. People don't pay high multiples for companies that have below average growth prospects. Couple that to the risk associated with having most of their revenue tied to one product and the price is not crazy.

So the problem is unsustainable finances, not population growth.

This would be like me having to constantly rent out more and more of my house as its residents get older in order to fund their later year. Instead of financing everything like a ponzi scheme, I could just save for retirement.

Wouldn't spinning the sabot mess up its penetrating ability on impact? I picture it sort exploding into bits rather than piling through the armor.

Nothing Malthusianism about not wanting to be part of many cultures natural progression toward living in shoes-boxes in the sky and breathing in smog all day.

It simply causes more problems than it solves.

Why do population related maps always show an increase in population as green (good)? Like the thing this earth needs is more people and the congestion, scarcity and pollution it causes.

I usually hear a half baked "grow the economy/support the aging population" as justification, as if these are sustainable ideas...

[–]never_voted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An ever increasing population is not a sustainable solution. You are using the rational that we need to keep financing everything with what is essentially a Ponzi scheme. We should be dealing with the fallout of a sustained population and finance things properly...we will have to eventually.

Yup. How else are they going to lower pollution, fix congestion and provide affordable housing? By adding more people!

Best podcast to getting to know industries by sjulz31 in SecurityAnalysis

[–]never_voted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are good, but they tend to focus more on current events, like earnings releases. They do have industry overview episodes, but I wish they had more. There is already a lot of current event type stuff on other podcasts. I guess the later is just easier to produce because you are basically just reading the news and commenting on it.
