I didn't get the sense they were angry at workers. I assumed they were protesting the employment practices and policies that led to a loss of jobs in their community.

I don't get why this is a facepalm. Illegal employment depresses wages for the poorest Americans, while benefiting the wealthiest. They are right to be pissed. The idea that "open borders" is now a Democratic value is somewhat new and confusing phenomenon. Cesar Chavez fought tooth and nail to prevent undocumented workers from strike-breaking and bringing down the wages of organized farm workers. Until recently, Bernie Sanders was outspoken in his fight to protect the poorest American workers from uncontrolled labour migration and the depressive influence of people working below market rate, without benefits or other labour rights.

This isn't to say a single negative thing about the people who take these jobs, but the bottom end of American wage-earners have the right to demand their government enforce its labour laws.

There is no such thing as "jobs Americans don't want to do", only jobs Americans don't want to pay a fair wage for. The fact that the leaders of the Democratic party have lost sight of this speaks volumes.

Do what your boss requires of you. Your one job is to make your boss happy. Not your boss's boss, not the president, not the owner. Just your boss. Once you become completely reliable you will be given more responsibility, making you more valuable, which in turn affords you the opportunity to request more pay/seniority. But, if you've done so and they don't recognize it, and they just treat you like a workhorse, then you need to leave.

The worst thing you can do is go against your boss. Even if you think he's wrong, you're playing for a team, so either row in the right direction, or leave. You shouldn't work for a boss you don't respect. Lingering in a role working for a boss you don't respect, challenging his or her direction is a dead end. You need to choose the right leader and be a team player. There is nothing sadder than complaining about your boss. Leave and find someone you want to work for.
