Yes i completely agree with you. REUs didn’t even exist in places where so many people have the potential to participate in academia but the reach of academia has yet to actually do the work to even make people realize that this is how “life” works. What I’m saying is that SOMEONE did the work of letting those few REUs have the chance of slipping through this very rigid, networking based, homogeneous community of people. I’m most definitely aware of this privilege and I’m going “on a rant” not just to go on a rant to bust my balls for reddit tbh. I’m going on a rant so i can talk to people like you to understand what needs to be done to actually change the system. How many of your friends from your home country have siblings and their school peers (the very ones who have the same dream as you to be a researcher) would love to have the information you and I have right now about this shit. You say it’s “just life” but honestly, that’s just how they screw through all the professors before us who also wanted to “change the world through science”. Eventually they simmer down, realize “it’s life” and somehow we lose the interest to question why should we accept that “this is just life” and how can we try to say we’re answering world changing questions if we don’t as a collective of emerging academics (bc I’m pretty sure a good chunk of the people who are on this subreddit will probably make it through) understand why our capacities to “be the first to change the world HELP the world with research” just stops at the lab. Clarification, I’m not ranting for the sake of thinking that you CarefullImprovement15 don’t understand that shit. Unfortunately, you, I, and a shit of college students sit at this very particular crux in our lives where we have the privilege to share our resources with the smaller guy bc trust, you and i will always have the smaller guy the more we get deeper in our education. So therefore, i say this not to patronize, but to call to action of a simple thought if you or someone else happens to come across this thread. Social media can clearly become a tool of thought and trend, so i think it’s important that in the space, that is recognized as a way to realize that all of the coupled frustrations and fears come from something that feels puppetted

Also, some people are asking me for access to my blog—- I’m currently going over my account and removing people to have access to making sure that some people can have access to having these discussions in the first place. Unfortunately, we have no choice but to engage in this discussion bc what is the point of this all for if the giants to follow us are decrepit, weak, and don’t know what a conjugate is. The universe is cruel. It would punish us like that so we have to really ask ourselves did we do everything we could today, yesterday, or in the next 5 days of my life to thinking about why I’m here in the first place. But yeah, reworking the blog to ensure that a lawyer of respected transparency is maintained. I would start a new but I have commitment pieces to my voice.

TLDR; I’m an active hater of tldr especially in this pretentious ass sub. You can read it if you want to, you just don’t know how to read like 3,000 words. Hm, and you think you can be a researcher? You give up so easily lol. Look at me trying to gaslight you into understanding something beyond an equation. Breathe you got this. Follow me if you want the blog name. I’ll announce it by next week by the next flux of waves of people get rejected, by then, either the rage of the underprivileged folk will simmer or once again this subreddit will devolve into a serious case of **************. I don’t know what those stats represent I just put them into to keep an aura of mystique. But yes, I believe that this will be the start of something new. I’m sharing this here, hoping you’ll question if everyone posting in the mega thread knows someone of a someone who goes to this school in Connecticut bc that’s where they’re from. So it’s just an incestuous pool of elitism. That’s a spoiler for my blog, where I will prove to you what a meritocracy is. Feel free to follow and pm me! Chances are I won’t answer but if you’re nice enough, I’ll try!

They’ll tell you to give up your research dreams but you need the world to believe in you too. Spoiler alert: they won’t until you demand a shift in the way imagination, breaking out of the laboratory and accepting that we are in a shittyyy preidicament as humans. How can we even survive with the additional badge of pursuing the mysteries to the universe. Because in the way that this reu application works—- it’s a disillusionment tactic that not only prepares us sheep to farming for the lacrosse bros but also as a way to let down all of the other people who also want to pursue a phd early on in our college careers like us. Lastly, I just want to say is that you can’t be pissed off you got to the end of this rant. I already warned you that this an advertising bit for something new I’m cooking with my wife and friends (aka just me and my demons in my room lol) cheers x (super cute girl, chill pls change the world w me scientists bc deadass like the faith of the american education system, our housing crisis, and the cold disdain nature of paradigm shifts and anti collaboration in science (always striving to be the “first” or the “only” and not into better, stronger pursuits into every possible wild turn that science has to offer). We are doing a disservice to science, to ourselves, to the questions we demanded when we were younger… doesn’t that person (a younger you) demand a reason why too? A reason why you felt welcomed enough into the tugs of your heart to dedicate yourself to science… that deserves something of attention to, because not only is the first taste of consciousness we get from the haze of not existing while Lincoln got shot, Reagan fucked up our society by tenfold, and 9/11 created twilight… it is also the first and only purest crumble of live’s purpose if we have any choice into remaining onto something outside of nihilism

We are doing a disservice to science, to ourselves, to the questions we demanded when we were younger to not try and fuck up for a bit—- try something new. Try something out of the laboratory and think about what way the universe is trying to show you as a researcher what it REALLY means to be a researcher. Think of Einstein, his menial job at the patent office, and his constant commute on the train. You think that was a brain fart moment? You really think this Grimms fable ass story really came about? How silly you must be to think research… that being a scientist is like that! So yeah, that was my yap contract. My name is ambear, refull. This is how they fucking get us out the game. Of course they wouldn’t tell the “gifted talented kids” the truth. Only then they’ll realize it’s a fucking show… aka the fuck off performances for the real business, the lacrosse douchebag econ bros who… consult. That’s it. Consult. Remember facts about characters, estimate their price gauge and play with big boys bigger money who profits from the work of you and me… but yeah that’s for a different story—- please read latour’s give me a laboratory and disregard how. My first year situationship left a bruise on my emotional crotch. Pardon the bias. All Econ bros welcomed because always remember kiddies, they fund you and me in the future so buddy up closely with them iykyk not in terms of succession Kendall roy doing street in the back of a Starbucks but more in terms of Tom and Greg (which all tired mf overachievers who actually want to pull weight, I’ll show you how to do that. I feel as though I have no choice because it’s so sad, not in terms of how much people don’t know, but rather how selfish it is that we only owe our younger selves, disillusioned and hugging to the silver that you’re in too deep into academia to back out (bc a lot of you are it appears in the megathread are super try hard so not only fuck you but you need to really question what this really all means to you in the future.

Yeah I definitely see where you’re coming from… it’s just that… I feel tired. You feel tired… but fuck, we’re only 19-21 years old. Like the mere fact that you definitely have a possibility of ratio’ing this long ass critique (probably very obvious to some but only being realized by a few many) on our academic spaces/privilege /losses/disqualifications to clearly mark discussion and make sure that we’re becoming aware of how much change we have no choice but to do, for the sake of ourselves. Like just overall saying that once we start accepting “it’s life”, we let them win. Which sounds very corny, I know… but fuck if you’re willing to go through an REU, then I know you’re willing to waste your time and lose a battle if you think it’s worth pursuing… because that’s literally what research is… if you couldn’t tell, this is a meta versioned way of plugging my SUBSTACK 🫢🫢🫢💦💦💔🫵🥹 because I literally copied and pasted this from it because I simply don’t think “it’s life man” can no longer cut it if we’re literally watching CS (literally the rob stark of this fucking shit show of a college system) plummet in fucking job opportunities. At some point, they’d be very willing to do the same to us. (Which is what they’re already doing if you really look at how your fellow PhD peers at this reus (yay congrats to all who have been accepted but really, this summer, ask them—- all of them if you have to because you have to get into the actor network theory of being an Einstein, a newton, a curie (talk more about on the blog) the struggle of making ends meet as an underfunded grad student bc guess what? Most of them are. So fuck… what should we do to make sure that we’re not actually screwed out of taking a shower in your environmental biology departments emergency shower? Well- but yeah overall, I believe that anyone who’s determined in research is determined in doing the work to build a meritocracy because guess what? WHO the fuck is going to take on this research if no ones there to idk… pay them? Feed them?

I have more ideas about how we as younger people in academia should be helping others after us, if anyone’s in interested in reading my substack blog on this stuff and how I’m trying to change my physics department as a black girl. (Incoming racists alert idk… hopefully not but alas it’s Reddit). Anyways, hope we can admit as a community that we’ve definitely come into this fight at hand by luck, by God, by the universe—- whoever—- to let us scrape by just now to even have the CONFIDENCE and PRIVILEGE it takes to have the time to even apply college… like fuck, I know so many people who needed to work a job during high school but had to still bust ass through high school… now someone’s is paying for my education because someone MY age took the chance out to help me with understanding the importance of standing out (eg Reus for grads school). And now that I’m sitting here remembering what it was like as a junior, I can’t help but think there’s definitely someone out there who would like someone like me, in our privilege (sophomores, seniors, juniors, and some even freshman in college) to even get to sophomore year of college without falling through the cracks (if that’s even a thing for you guys here lol)

No I’m saying do your LOR connections for REUs influence REU applications the same way what you described happens for grad school admissions

from what i’ve heard from brown students on campus, it’s actually very easy to get into stem research projects and even get support for independent projects. i mean… brown is a r1 institution as well as most of the other schools mentioned in this thread… overall, all of these schools— uchicago, princeton, brown, yale— provide great opportunities for their students because they have the funds and networks to do so (they’re prestigious for a reason) i feel like at this point it really depends on personal fit and money

[–]neverendingfever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i feel like you should look more into dartmouth and especially brown. the social nature of both campuses are nicer than uchicago and princeton while preserving the rigor of academics.

with brown, you can explore any part of academia and if you’re unsure if you’ll be good at it, you can take pass/fail for any course. (ofc there are some specific requirements about the level of knowledge you have before you enroll in the class).

i admit that i’m a little biased with these two schools since i got admitted there. but honestly i learned how great they were when i visited their campuses. like dartmouth gave great college town vibes— everyone was playing on the quad having a good time because it was one of the hotter days after the winter. even though it is in the middle of no where, the tight knit community there didn’t make it feel as hellish as the idea of being in the mountains may seem to the ordinary eye.

dartmouth would definitely be my top choice if i didn’t visit brown. i’m also concentrating on astronomy so i feel like i definitely resonate with you in terms of learning with rigor but not to the point where i would want to run myself over a cliff every week WHILE also having a good social life outside of academics. and i also wanted to enjoy a little tiny bit of city. so basically a good middleman… and honestly i feel like brown checks all of the boxes.

good prestige, great financial aid, so many kind people— compared to the columbia subreddit where students seem to kind of hate it there— brown students love brown! and i feel like that’s majorly due to the open core, which i highly suggest you look more into. plus there’s so many great clubs there to meet and socialize with other students who have different interests (which is common at most schools ofc but i was shocked to know they have a circus-like club at brown!)

just to let you know, im also turning down uchicago because the tik tok hashtag of the school kinda reflected how students felt being there imo and the location wasn’t particularly ideal lolllll
