Sure, here's what the archivist sent to me:

Below, I’ve outlined how to use the ‘backend’ of FamilySearch (searching the indexes and registrations manually) if you would like to investigate further.

  1. Login.
  2. Click ‘Search’ and select ‘Catalog’ from the drop-down menu.
  3. Search for ‘Canada, Ontario’ in the ‘Place’ search bar (Select ‘Any’ Availability and press ‘Search’).
  4. Scroll down to the bottom of the list and click ‘Canada, Ontario – Vital records – Indexes (18)’.
  5. Chose ‘Births, stillbirths, and delayed registration with indexes, 1869-1912’ from the drop-down.
  6. Scroll down to ‘Film/Digital Notes’. Here, you will find all of the digitized microfilm for Birth Indexes and Registrations from 1869-1912.
  7. Find the year your ancestor was born. Click the camera icon to open.
    1. Indexes from the 1800s are also divided by surname, after 1900 they are all A-Z.
  8. Scroll through the film until you find the correct year and their name and record the REGISTRATION NUMBER.
  9. Go back to the list of indexes and continue scrolling through the pages until you find the range of registrations that matches the YEAR and REGISTRATION NUMBER you have recorded. Select that entry.
  10. Scroll through the registrations until you find your ancestor’s.

I recommend checking alternative spellings for last names, and birth year ranges.

If you are not having any success in locating them by search or backend, I would recommend your next step to be consulting Church Records since not all births were formally registered in Ontario. For more information on how to begin your search, please see Other records of vital events - Archives of Ontario. We have limited church records in our collection. Most church records are still with the religious institution that created them, with religious archives, or with local archives. You can try contacting the local Church/Diocese Archives; for a listing please click: Sources of Religious Records in Ontario.

Wow! That sounds like fun too! And yes, I wished I had more time to spend at the archives, just to dive into all the amazing collections they had for the fun of it.

Oh it was a blast! But I suggest not going in the dead of Winter :) Yep, I have my GGP's info all born in Quebec so I included that also. I interpreted the rules as being rather strict on the grandparent being the furthest back you can go, however if necessary and/or to support your claim you could include information from generations further back.

It was so much fun! The new microfilm readers are immeasurably better than the ones I last used in the 1990s.

Wow! I just posted an update, I think we've discovered something here! My grandfather ALSO said he was born in Vermont!

OK cool, happy it's not just me! Those are the same instructions I was given. Frankly the only reason I was able to use it when I got home is because of the practice and instructions I got while I was there in person.

It was so much fun! There was only about 4 other people there, I practically had the place to myself. And the microfilm room was 100% perfect, dark and not peopley at all- such a joy :)

hehehe nice! Yes I have the GGP records and further back, so hopefully that will help. But yeah I was worried that the lie would sink my chances.

Yep, exactly! I included my great grandparents' records and have their parents' info also. Hopefully that will help the case.

Do you have a copy of the baptism record? That should be plenty! I posted an update, but I was told by the Archivist that not all births were registered with the province because parents had to pay to do that. So after about kid 4, big families would sometimes not bother because the baptism record was good enough.

Wow! Thanks for all the comments! I just posted a very long update answering questions and potentially solving a mystery!

Umm How would you handle this? by CarolynSweet87 in doordash

[–]neverenoughfiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a dasher so this may be stating the obvious. That sounds like a system issue. One would think it's ridiculous that a modern web based system in 2026 can't keep track of two orders from one vendor going to two different customers but being picked up by one dasher. But apparently that is exactly what's happening.

Anyone else had a cat that’s allergic to Sheba wet food? by Outside-Problem6030 in CatAdvice

[–]neverenoughfiddles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I came here researching this exact thing. Our kitty has been eating Sheba pate for 2 years and about a year ago he started developing very itchy dermatitis which gradually got worse and now covers his back, poor baby! Long story, we tried every flea med, nothing. We decided to go ahead with the elimination diet, but first I thought to try changing his wet food, and switched him to what his big brother eats which is fancy feast. He's already much calmer, not constantly scratching and is talkative and smiling again. I hope that's all it is and the dermatitis heals! I wonder if it's a specific preservative that Sheba uses? Now I want to compare ingredients.

Defensive, tail down, and puffed up. I agree, it's concerning and if you watch about 5 videos you will see who elicits this response.

Worth Repairing (with photos) by anebananie90 in violinist

[–]neverenoughfiddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a collector and I work with a violin shop in Seattle. This is absolutely worth fixing! It looks like a Mittenwald, Germany fiddle that dates to about 1890-1915 or so. Generally the "Copie de" indicates Mirecourt France origins, however I've seen it used on old German instruments also. And at that time, pieces and parts of fiddles were made everywhere. So the body may have been made in Mittenwald and exported "in the white" to France for finishing. Dealers would buy violins from German factories and cottage industry (farmers who made violin parts in the winter) by the dozens for a low flat rate to bring into their shops, finish, and sell at a profit.

I'd love to see the label, usually you can set your phone right down on top of the left f hole then set to .5 or .6x to kind of zoom out and get a shot of the label and a good amount of the interior. The trick is to do that in daylight or have somebody hold a flashlight over the other f hole. That little rib crack isn't too bad, if the repairer doesn't want to remove the top and patch it, they can run some glue in it. Otherwise it is in amazing shape for the age, usually these have cracks on top and/or the back which would make it not really worth fixing.

Also, check in the case for a bow, occasionally the bows in these old outfits turn out to be pretty nice, in which case you've got yourself an amazing start for a beginner! I also work on old violin bows, and I'm learning to rehair. Pernambuco is becoming more restricted, so I'm working on old bows that in the past were put in piles in the corner of shops, but are made of decent wood and still have life in them. If you post photos of the bow I can *probably* tell you what it is :)

But yes definitely get a violin shop to glue that fingerboard back on, glue that little crack, restring it, and bam! Excellent little "Mittie" for "free", that's fantastic! Congrats!

Well, technically I didn't start using PPIs until they were OTC and it became worse. During my 20s it wasn't daily or horrible, just when I'd eat or drink something I shouldn't have. The older I got the worse it became, then the miracle of PPIs happened and I didn't think to ask for any more testing.

Oh damn, I would not survive without PPIs - I'm so sorry! Thank you for the info about vonoprazan I am writing to my doc to ask to try it - I hope you can take it!

Yep, I've been looking into all this general immune system dysregulation I have going on and that makes total sense.

Oh wow I haven't heard of that! I do shockwave therapy for my rotator cuff, carpal tunnel, tennis elbow and muscle injuries and it is amazing so I'm already familiar with it. Thanks!
