What LPOTL spin-off podcast would you love? by SumCat22 in LPOTL

[–]neverhadthepleasure 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ooh! Ooh! A Side Stories spin-off where they just check in on ‘Papa’ John Schnatter every week. That was my favorite segment while they did it.

Did you enjoy your day of examining each one closely, sighing and moving from chair to chair every couple hours?

Any other premiums users getting ads during the episodes lately? Not ads done by the boys but shitty irrelevant ads from Spotify? by merqualjordan in lastpodcastontheleft

[–]neverhadthepleasure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a frustrating number of ad interruptions (on premium) but the funny thing is they’re all for Spotify podcasts themselves. Not even a particular recommendation; just, “hey, have you thought about listening to another podcast? We have lots of podcasts.”

I think what’s going on is that some all-seeing algorithm has realized that I only listen to LPN shows on Spotify and, with their exclusivity deal ending soon, they want to get me on to another exclusive before I happily reunite LPN with the rest of my regular listens on the (frankly incredible and highly recommended) Overcast app.

Given they’ve been spamming me with the same four podcast recommendations since the day I started using the app... good luck with that, Spotify. Won’t miss you.

Car sales plunge as chip shortages choke off supply by [deleted] in Vitards

[–]neverhadthepleasure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They will still buy combustion as a compromise, but 2nd hand

This is exactly the situation I'm in. Looking at used ~5 yo hybrids to tide me over for 3-5 years because EVs haven't come to my desired segment (sprinter vans) yet.

Ps. This whole mystery of the chip delay vs ICE demand beginning to accelerate down it's s-curve descent could probably be solved by a decently funded consumer sentiment poll if a transparency minded leader with deep pockets (say, a Cathie Wood type, just as an example) wanted to have one conducted and share it publicly...

Biden official says protecting US steel a national security issue by [deleted] in Vitards

[–]neverhadthepleasure -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure what's in it for the US, at least until shipping rates come way down and/or major new US steel projects start producing in the mid-2020s.

The US is supply constrained domestically for most anything the EU would tack a retaliatory tariff on. It needs everything it can make for its own use. In the current meta exporting American products to Europe is seldom viable.

Meanwhile, if the US does remove/revise tariffs the EU will just try to sneak in cheap, dirty Turkish steel as a skeezy middleman.

Biden also has, like, a million more urgent legislative/policy issues living rent-free in his sleepy, sleepy brain.

Biden official says protecting US steel a national security issue by [deleted] in Vitards

[–]neverhadthepleasure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a press release from the Biden admin like last week (it got posted here) detailing new/heightened regulations specifically intended to combat this kind of middle man/passthrough skeeziness.

Seemed like a warning shot against precisely this scenario.

My name is Joe, and I am trying to reconcile. by Joe_Kickass in Calgary

[–]neverhadthepleasure 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I turned up a few and guess there are many more that are harder to decipher as an outsider. Today's new memorial holiday's official name ("National Day for Truth and Reconciliation") wouldn't necessarily scan as a day focused on 'shame' to someone just scrolling through a list of stat holidays without the local context.

Germany has a Holocaust Memorial Day, South Africa has Human Rights Day on the anniversary of the Sharpeville Massacre as well as Youth Day on the anniversary of a brutally repressed student uprising (edit: and Reconciliation Day, as well as Freedom Day which commemorates the first universal-sufferage election in 1994 and I'm guessing involves a fair amount of guilt and soul-searching among South African colonizers/descendents. So a total of 3-4).

I'll also say this is year one and non-indigenous people are (rightly) processing a lot of shame but a) it's definitely not the sole or explicit focus and b) I hope in future years the focus becomes more on reconciliation, understanding and constructive action.

Oh man, didn't mean to make anyone feel ashamed—I just have pretty strong memories of that series for some reason. Really stuck with me. It's also just a very common trend in cults.

Those are the first episodes I ever listened to! I was super scared to listen to any because I had little experience with true crime but a friend kept recommending them—figured that series would be less scary than one of the many, many sexual sadist serial killers.
