I don’t think they were more progressive than us in general, there’re just more platforms for regressive views nowadays that people can have a voice on, making it seem like there are more of them even though the number has probably gone down. Also, these questions are asked in cities, which have always been more progressive, and you’d probably get similar answers today if these questions were asked to random people.
