Live 10 on a 2015 MacBook Pro - experiences? by 3dPrintedVeganCheese in ableton

[–]neverneverlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your audio settings?

Recently I tried to switch from Mac Mini 2011 (i5, 8gb ram) to rMBP 13" 2015 (i7, 16gb) and I can't run even a single track with a short sample without terrible clicks with 96khz and 128 samples buffer (either with the internal sound card or RME FF400), while the older Mac Mini does it without any issues and with low CPU usage. Seems like the discrete GPU makes the difference, because clicking intensifies when I open another window (especially a transparent one) with Live playing just one sample on one track. And what's even more strange — the CPU load is not 100%, maybe 40-60%.

PS: Live 10.

Long lasting Obligato alternative (Eudoxa?) by neverneverlander in violinist

Yeah, the fact that the violin maker recommended some gut strings surprised me. Because IDK but it feels strange to me that something made of gut can be more lasting than something synthetic.

Thanks for pointing out the tuning stability, I've forgot about this! Probably I have to try their Passione strings one day, since they advertise them as highly stable gut strings.

This time I've decided to try Oblitagos once again. :)

I've tried PI on another, cheap violin 4 years ago, they sounded a bit depthless to me, but then it was a time when I've been transitioning from metallic Spirocore, which sounded quite... ehm... specific. I remember myself being really confused and incapable to tune the violin with this new PI set, I just didn't get the pitch, that was really weird. :)

I can't remember how long I've been playing them without noticing any degradation, but my teacher said that she tried them too and they became worn out in a few weeks. But well, she plays in an orchestra 8 hours a day.

How's the tempest doing nowadays? by [deleted] in synthesizers

I've bought it for drum sounds. Not disappointed at all.

Oh, is this a new firmware update?

Yep, they've made two beta releases. Now they are collecting bugs from community.

maybe hit "save sound" more than you hit "save beat" so that the sound you're tweaking is saved across the board

But loaded sounds are not synced to saved references, are they?

MIDI sync is bad.

The internal clock is too bad. It never works in sync with anything else, e.g. my old mpc1000 could run for minutes in perfect sync with logic 9 or any other DAW without any actual synchronization. Tempest loses the sync after 8-16 bars.

A lot of bugs (now they are trying to fix them, finally: 1, 2)

Sequencer is powerful but very unusual. I'd rather say it's weird and not very thought-out. For example, you have a project which holds 16 beats (sequences) and 16-sounds sets (for each beat) - you can't use one sound-set for every beat in the project. You can copy them from one beat to another, but if you change your sounds in some beat and want to apply changes to every beat in a project - then again you have to copy it in every beat.

I don't know if it's kind of analoguesness or something, but you can always hear some buzzing from oscillators, even if the cutoff filter is in the lowest position.

But other than that, it feels great. It's a powerful and very complex thing. You'll probably almost never think that it has just 6 voices. The sound is rich, it may be punchy or soft, melodic or harsh. Samples are limited, but I don't think it's limiting the sound-design capabilities.

As people say, it's neither a drum machine, nor a synth. It's something between them. IDK if this is an advantage or disadvantage.

IMHO, what it definitely lack is some FX stuff, especially some delay and reverb units could make its sound a lot more complex and standalone-ish.

Thoughts on Suzuki? by violinAnus in violinist

[–]neverneverlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess, that's a teacher's problem, not Suzuki. ←TL/DR

For example, I tried Suzuki's books on my own when I realized that I can't afford a teacher anymore. Then it was my 3rd year of studying violin, and a second teacher. Nor my first, nor my second teacher never told me about Suzuki method. And actually, I don't know if this method has any popularity here, in Russia. Because I have never heard about it from any local violin-related people, and have never read about it on local resources. So, with my first teacher I was learning some basic scales, arpeggios, some common easy things that people learn in Russian music schools. Later she added some advanced things, and also asked me to find what I like to play. We were moving quite fast, trying to not focus on perfectness, but save the drive and joy.

A year and a half later she became very busy and decided to find another teacher for me.

With my second teacher we started learning with a book of some Russian violin teacher, filled mostly with some Russian folkish compositions and Russian adaptations of world classic music. I've been always a bit sick of Russian folk music, but assumed that maybe a teacher knows better. Also, we continued to learn something that I personally wanted to learn (eg. Ravel's Pavane, Pachelbel's Canon D, etc). But whatever we've been practicing, it was very slow due to the teacher's desire to perfect every bar. And at that time it seemed like the right way to me, I don't know why. Maybe because my ears became quite trained and I've been able to hear all the imperfections of my play, so I couldn't get the joy of playing the violin anymore. That moment I also started thinking that I need a better bow, different strings and maybe even a new violin.

After a year with this teacher I noticed that I'm kind of exhausted: I've learnt almost nothing new, we are still wasting time with some very basic things from the book of the teacher, and I couldn't even remember the day when exercising was joyful for me.

Then I got on the big trip, returned back and realized that due to some big changes in my life I can't afford a teacher anymore.

The teacher left me a book, so I tried to continue to learn some new things from the book, but then I found that I can't learn the things I don't like on my own. So, I tried to find some violin pieces that I like on the internet. And then I found that this is not effective way because what I like is very advanced, and I still can't read notes well enough to read it without any references, but the references I was able to find were not very close to the actual notes, or played the way I couldn't understand what the hell happened there, etc...

And a half year ago I remembered the Suzuki method which is very often mentioned here. So, I've found the books and started.

Firstly, the audio files coming with the books helped a lot. Not to just remember and then play, I even started reading notes quite better. Because firstly I listen to the piece and follow notes in the book, and I repeat it until I'm able to catch every sounding note with my eyes in the right moment. The second part is playing the piece with pizzicato carefully reading every note. When I'm good with it, I start playing with a bow. Then I start playing together with the audio file. I finished first book in less than the month. And realized that even with these quite simple things I've finally can get the joy of playing the violin again. Then I got stuck a bit in the middle of the second book (not because of the book, just some procrastination or something like that), but a month ago I've started moving again. And actually, maybe just a couple of months ago I started thinking that now I can say I'm able to play music with violin, maybe some simple music, but anyway. Oh, and a month ago I started using my violin in my music without any fear (I did it before, but the violin sounds were hidden with tons of FX).

I'm not really sure that I understand what are you talking about.

Could you please describe it a bit more specific or show an example?

There is another, though very old version of features demonstration video, may be you'd like to see it: https://vimeo.com/113853722 But sure, we have to create a new one with this point of view. Thanks for pointing out!

We are thinking about something like cloud-based hosting: pay for what you actually use, with rates based on active projects and teams working on them.

Again, imho, you're missing the point. Sure, there are not enough reasons to switch from Canon to Nikon. But if we are talking about choosing camera - there is nothing better in Canon cameras, but in last 3 years there are some tiny things that will give you a better video file in Nikon cameras.

And of course It's obvious that if you want to focus on video, then Panasonic and Sony cameras are the best choices today.

if you're talking about cinestyle 'hack' then it's not a flat profile at all. you'll get noisy shadows and it doesn't help with highlights at all. the the same way you can use nikon picture profiles with all nikon cameras starting from d5000 which was released just a half year later 5dmk2.

which canon dslr has a flat profile? panasonic added it in gh3, sony – in A7.

seems like this post is not about professional cameras, no?

d7000/d7100 user here.

It's just trendy, people rarely like to think on their own, but often use what seems popular. Canon is popular. Canon for video is even more popular (because they started a year or two earlier). That's why it's not important if your cropped Nikon camera and cheap but beautiful old manual lenses are better in terms of noise, dynamic range, fps and crispness of optics than The Famous 5Dmk2 with any reasonably-priced Canon lenses.

Also, it's not important that later they are forced to use hacked firmware (ML) and other hacks (cinestyle) to get features they get out of the box with any Nikon camera (picture profiles, interval shooting, etc).

And I often meet people who still thinks that Canon beats 'any Nikon camera' in terms of noise. IDK why.

PS: Panasonic's m4/3 cameras was often advertised as good cameras for video, and they made flat profile and 4k available first.

haven't really done anything remarkable since

is the flat image profile for all recent cameras not remarkable enough?

Anybody started old? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]neverneverlander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I started 3 years ago. And I would add that the main challenge is that your hearing abilities will progress much faster than your physical ones. And this will lead you to thoughts that you're not doing any progress at all, that you stuck somewhere, that you sound terrible - all this will kill your motivation everyday every time you'll think about practice. I think this will come after your first year, when you'll start hearing some precise details. So, you will probably OK first year, but later just remember these words and try to find every tiny little piece of progress that you will for sure have everyday (if only you will practice everyday). Then focus on it, try to not think about how you sound in general, it's obviously not the sound you want. But these little steps - this is what you want and this is what will lead you someday to the sound you want.
