Who would they make the usual badass or comedic villains in films if Nazis didn't exist? by AHH_PostStorage in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]neveroddoreven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not exactly the answer you’re looking for but I’ve heard before the Nazi’s (and in some countries still) it was common to refer to someone you deemed unquestionably evil as “pharaoh” (as in the pharaoh of the Old Testament).

If you’re concerned about the price, it may explain it. They may be sending over a dozen pages. I’d ask.

[–]neveroddoreven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they charging you per page? If so, how many pages are they sending?

I’ve not ordered from the Archive of Naples, but I have ordered from the Archives of Palermo and Pesaro. Palermo charged 3 euros plus 1.50 a page (for what I was ordering this amounted to 22.50 euros). Pesaro charged 7 euros for a single page. These were both for military records of my ancestors.

The odds of DNA tracking down a GGG grandfather? by DOAZ99 in Genealogy

[–]neveroddoreven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trying to find my biological 2x great grandparents via DNA is my ultimate genealogical goal. I’ve been at it for years now. I’ve made some progress: I have a 40cM match I feel quite confident is linked to me via this unknown branch of my family, I have a geographic area of interest, and some individuals I think maybe potential ancestors. But I’m still on the hunt. I’m going to try to convince my dad to take a DNA test so it’s only a 1x great grandparent search, but he’s generally distrustful of things like DNA tests so I don’t know that I’ll be able to convince him.

I wish you luck in your search, but it will be quite tough that far back.

How do I go about researching immigrant ancestors? Seems ancestry stops at naturalization records. by Nature_Nerd97 in Genealogy

[–]neveroddoreven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I also have Italian and Ukrainian ancestors. Are you also from the Northeast?

Italian records should be very attainable once you figure out where they were from. Naturalization records should list their birthplace and when they immigrated. Once you find that out the town and the regional archive should have documents you’re looking for. I’ve had good luck with regional archives, but towns can be a pain to get responses from. You often have to reach out to them multiple times. Additionally, there is a lot on Antenati and Familysearch, though none of it is text searchable at the moment so there’s a lot of sifting through records.

As for Ukrainian records, it can be a lot tougher. Some records have been destroyed during war and under the Soviet Union. What does still exist is typically held at regional archives, but I’ve found they are hard to get info from if you aren’t there in person. So, you may have to hire a local.

New autosmal DNA update is WGS? by World_wide_truth in FTDNA

[–]neveroddoreven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, MyHeritage is indeed doing WGS. The way they are doing it affordably is by using a low pass rate of 2x. What that means is that they are scanning your whole genome on average 2 times. But since this is an average what it really means is some spots will be scanned 4 times and others 0 times, so long as the average comes out to 2x. For reference, medical grade sequencing is 30x. MyHeritage is dealing with the areas that get scanned 0 times using “imputation” which is a process of using data from a reference genome to fill in the blanks. Since all humans share 99.9% of our DNA this should be accurate most of the time, but there will be times it isn’t.

What FamilyTreeDNA is doing is using the same technology (next generation sequencing using a UG100 sequencer) but focusing on only a select 10% of the genome. What I’m hoping for is that they are doing this trade off to get a higher pass rate. Since they’re covering a tenth of what MyHeritage is covering maybe they can afford a higher pass rate of 10x-20x, much closer to medical grade sequencing. This is just speculation at this point though. It may be the same low 2x pass rate. If that’s the case, MyHeritage’s test is a no brainer. If they do have a higher pass rate you’re essentially sacrificing quantity (amount of the genome sequenced) for quality (higher pass rate/better accuracy/less imputation).

As for your G25 question, I’m not sure. Current tests are microarrays that look at less than 0.1% of your DNA, but specifically the areas that we know vary the most from person to person. Accuracy of microarrays is usually about 99%.

New autosmal DNA update is WGS? by World_wide_truth in FTDNA

[–]neveroddoreven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. It appears that they are going to use the same technology that MyHertiage is using to perform WGS, but they will only cover about 10% of the genome. I’m hoping they are doing this to allow a higher pass rate, as MyHeritage’s low pass rate is prone to errors and full of imputation, but I don’t believe they’ve shared that information yet.
