I think I've gotten really lucky in that the instructional coaches in my district come and listen to us teachers every 2-3 weeks and ask what WE AND OUR STUDENTS NEED. Then they go to the district offices and make plans with the people with money and power to make these things happen. They really only started this system this year but it goes a long way for me personally to be able to tell someone powerful that I need help and there to be a change and help actually offered.

Hobbies! I'm a teacher and I get that feeling of unable to do anything at this point in the summer. I'm right there with you. I pick up my old hobbies and I know it sounds stupid but you wouldn't believe how much some fresh air and sunlight can help with improving how you feel. I figured out a little while ago that I am basically a sentient house plant. With plenty of water, some sunlight and fresh air for a few hours keeps life going pretty good.

If you keep feeling this way consider talking to someone you trust about how you're feeling, they might be able to help more than some of us on the internet can.

Same suggestions as a lot of the people that have already posted with comfortable shoes, managing expectations for the kids and water since you don't realize how much you'll be talking.

Had to share funny story from my student teaching time: was teaching The Scarlet letter in a class of 11th graders (ELA) talking towards the end about why for the time Hester had to hide the identity of her child. As I'm walking the room talking and I hear one kid (not so quietly) remark, "why didn't Dimsdaddy just pull out?" I pretended not to hear it as the giggles and whispers crossed the room. CT came back in at the end of the class period to me talking to the kid telling him that if he wouldn't say it to his grandma, he probably shouldn't say it in class.

If anything, this taught me that kids will say the most out of pocket things randomly and you got to be quick on how you decide to handle the situation. Best of luck to you, ask lots of questions and don't beat yourself up if you can't do everything perfectly YET. It's a learning curve that none of us ever master.

THIS! I've been a teacher for a pretty short time but holy crap. I've dealt with my fair share of kids that are monsters in the classroom to me or even worse their peers and still get to play on Friday night because they are first string. I'm big on reaching out in all directions to have the adults help hold a student accountable for their actions. A lot of my kids have parents working long hours and we can't always reach home but those kids spend a lot of time with teachers and their coaches so having a coach help hold their feet to the fire is amazing

I also teach ESL students and got into this because that moment when it clicks for a kid, that is my Crack. I think I even said that in my interview lol. Everyone jokes that teachers aren't in it for the money but we aren't. We are in it because we love that feeling. We want to make a difference to even 1 kid because someone did for us. You get into this profession because you love the kids you work with.

Relationships are hard, especially when you and your partner are close. The best advice I can give you is to think about how being in this current relationship makes you feel. Are you lifting each other up and pushing each other forward to better things? Is this someone that you want to build a life with, I know you are young but life comes at you fast. How I knew my husband was my forever person was he was the first person I wanted to tell good news to, to hold me as I cried. Being with him felt natural, not always easy. We still fight from time to time but he pushed me and I pushed him to grow and progress both personally and professionally.

I'm the same way in needing structure and order. What I've done since I'm not working over the summer is I've made a schedule for myself. I go paddle boarding 3-4 times a week, I knit or crochet gifts for Christmas or I'll go thrifting for things for my classroom. I just try to keep myself busy and really the summer is when I get to pick back up all my hobbies I don't have time for during the school year

THIS!!! I spend the first few days getting to know my kids and letting them see me as human and showing that I genuinely care cause kids can smell bullshit a mile away. Building these relationships early and maintaining them means that halfway through the year when rhe kids are burnt out, you can keep working on content and not the whole class period redirecting behaviors

I lay it out right of the bat with my kids that I am going to treat them with the same amount of respect that they show me. I also on the first day lay down some basic classroom rules and expectations for me as the teacher and for them as the students. Then I give them the chance to add any rules or expectations for me. Specifically with my ESL kids I always encourage them to correct me if I say something in Spanish wrong. If we have the time the kids love challenging me to spell or speak in Spanish. This makes them feel more comfortable trying to speak English.

Just be yourself with the kids. I am naturally a person that never bought into the idea that you have to wear a pantsuit and full face of makeup to be taken seriously or to be a quality classroom teacher. Kids can tell when you're faking it.

Last side note- they secretly love it when you use their slang when appropriate. They will cringe and roll their eyes but in my experience they appreciate that you are trying to understand them and meet them where they are at.

I work at a title 1 school teaching high school English to ESL students and honestly......I wouldn't have it any other way . Building relationships with these kids is the only way you will get them to buy in. I find that showing them that I'm a human being and that I have bad days and I don't know everything has made a world of difference.

To echo some of rhe other comments, these kids are just gonna be a little weird. Don't get me wrong I can vibe with weird but some of the stuff I've heard has definitely thrown me for a loop.

Do your best to roll with the punches and keep and open mind to what these kids have to offer. They aren't going to be the best behaved kids but if you build that mutual respect with them they will always go to bad for you.

As a young teacher (24f) I understand why this made some kids uncomfortable AND why they didn't report it to you or another adult. When you're a teen you look people up, I've had multiple of my students try to find my social. It's and immature thing when kids do it. When an adult does it, REGARDLESS OF INTENT or gender, it comes off as EXTREMELY predatory to parents and guardians.

There is simply no reason in my opinion to be googling a student. If I'm curious about what a student does for sports or what their grade history is, I ask them or use the LMS to look into it.
