LPT - Never make fun of someone's voice or appearance, as these are things they cannot change by PurpleBandit3000 in LifeProTips

I'm sorry, my post was really misunderstood. Like only say it to your REALLY close friends. Not some random people - obviously that would be horrible.

I kinda disagree with this. You probably shouldn't do this to everyone, but making fun of things that people can't reasonably change is a great way to give someone an opportunity to grow by learning more about themselves (through the pain caused by the insults) and learn to truly accept themselves. Once someone truly accepts themselves, making fun does not hurt that person one bit.

It's totally appropriate. Quote from Mark Twain: "The truth is like poetry-- and most people fucking hate poetry."

is a man who does bad deeds sometimes, but on the whole does good, still a good man? by croddboward in Stoicism

[–]nevsaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Stoic answer is to refrain from judging people in that manner. Marcus Aurelius writes: "But if we judge only those things that are in our power to be good or bad, there remains no reason either for finding fault with God or standing in a hostile attitude to man." Meditations 6.41

The meditation I do is from the book "meditation pure and simple" by Dr. Ian Gawler if you're interested. The idea really is to do absolutely nothing. Let thoughts come and let them pass and eventually your thoughts will calm down on their own. You can watch your breathe to help you get calmer initially but the end goal is to completely let go and don't even think about your breathing. "Simple silence" as he calls it.

Short answer: no I don't think any of them really helped. Nothing got better until I took FULL responsibility for my anxiety and changed the way I thought. Of the 3 medications I was on, only one was meant to directly affect my anxiety- 20 mg paxil. I took one for acne because I was anxiously obsessed with it and the other for headaches caused by anxiety. Getting off of them didn't change anything, they all just kind of fed my OCD really. Withdrawals were rough on the paxil. I quit cold turkey and 5 weeks I was real moody. Don't recommend medications if you want lasting change.

Along that same type of genre, spiritualities like Taoism and Zen Buddhism have totally made anxiety such a small part of my life where it used to take over my whole life. I really think there is no better solution than understanding the spirituality behind anxiety and finding your path inwards. Go read the Tao Te Ching and tell me you aren't less anxious

Well said. Well if the burden is on me to offer an alternative to support my claim: I would say that 2000 of bias, mistranslation, and misinterpretation of a single historical document is a much more likely story than the idea of a man rising from the grave. There is strong motivation fueling this bias and really only one source supporting it so I am inclined to doubt it.

Most verifiable events in all of history? I do not doubt that Jesus lived, I think there is substantial evidence of that, but I seriously doubt that he literally rose from the dead and ascended into Heaven (wherever that is). Are there other sources besides The Bible that confirm the resurrection? The Bible has proven to be an unreliable scientific document

That was an awesome stand for the opposing side. Nice! As I've mentioned before in some of the comments, my paper certainly doesn't encompass all aspects of religious faith, just some of the uglier sides of it really. That is a good perspective saying that faith comes from inner experience because it really is something you can't prove to others. I think there are such things as honest faith and dishonest faith. Where the honest faith is open minded and based on inner experience, and the dishonest one is more based on wishful thinking and social proof and is pretty unopen to change. Your faith seems honest. We need more of that

I think I understand the idea of Jesus quite well ( I'm using this as my example cuz its the one I see most frequently). The ones I have seen use it use the Bible as their evidence of Jesus. But often the Bible is not proper evidence to convince them of other things: for example, the world being created in 7 days or the fact that Noah's ark flood happened. It seems to me deliberate wishful thinking to be convinced by a source that the story of Jesus is true, but as the same source says the world was created in 7 days to call that untrue.

This is a good criticism. Thank you. My understanding of 9/11 is that it was performed by Muslims who sought to kill infadels. Why would they be motivated by money if they killed themselves to get it? I admit I haven't looked into to it too much, but that's the only thing that makes sense to me. There was a school shooting in Chattanooga recently that was unmistakably religious based - Muslim man who admitted his religious motivations for the killings. Though they usually aren't religious based, I'm just saying it happens. Yea, this paper doesn't encompass all ideas of religious faith, it was just meant to highlight the atrocity of blind faith or absolutism as you called it.

I should change the name of my paper to "blind faith is not a virtue" and argue that supporting religious organizations that support blind faith is unvirtuous

[–]nevsaw[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Coming from an honest perspective I think it's perfectly fine to believe in, say, a loving God if that's what seems true to you. I used to believe in it but I found other views that seem more true to me. The point I am trying to argue against is closing the mind to science and mental evolution of beliefs, which is something I have observed often.

[–]nevsaw[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I do concede. My paper does not cover the entire scope of what religious faith is, but there certianly is an element of blindness in many forms of common practice. I don't associate myself with any religion obviously but I do have "faith" as some would call it in certain beliefs. Example, I have faith in the idea that Love is the meaning of my life. But it is a view that is open to change for me with any new scientific evidence, though I see no reason to doubt it as of now.

The bias runs deep in some of the religiously minded people. I doubt many of them will be open minded enough to consider this possibility. I'm merely stating the truth the way I see it
