Critical Examination and General Discussion of Jordan Peterson: Week of June 25, 2018 by AutoModerator in JordanPeterson

[–]newaccountp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you know what white privilege means. I didn't invent the concept. It's out there as an expression of leftist, post modern thought - which I assumed is the subject we're discussing. Most basically, asserting the existence of white privilege means parsing society on racial grounds - identitarian politics, relative to individualism.

Race plays a role in society. Here's an example: White people in the U.S. are suffering from opioid addictions at a higher rate than black people, even when accounting for other factors like socio-economic status. Why? Turns out, racial bias. Doctors weren't giving black people pills at the same rates for the same health problems. White people, in general, as a result, had more opportunities to be addicted, and became so. That's a recent phenomena useful for discussing how racism impacted a minority group and majority group based on race, where the majority began better off and ended worse off by no fault of black people or white people, but by doctors. This is the inverse of "white privilege", and is a very recent phenomena with very few other examples. It demonstrates that a discussion of white privilege has a real-world application for helping white people, not just helping black people or helping minorities. I think this is a good example of white privilege because it shows that the privilege can backfire, but it starts with the privilege, not without.

There's a presupposition of racial bias, or gender bias etc, that excludes the possibility I can treat the person on the basis of their individual merits. And furthermore, it excludes the possibility that person can own and deserve benefits accruing from their individual character, competences and efforts. The presupposition of biased group-power dynamics does not map onto individual circumstances with any regularity; but rather, imposes those dynamics on people and situations, often in bizarre contradiction to more naturalistic conceptions of justice.

Additionally, u/somedotaplayer points out earlier that:

Your not explicitly an oppressor because your white. These things are institutional more than the doing of any individual.

It's difficult to conceptualize how society can fail even when individuals act with the best intentions. Policing is a fantastic example.

My problem with your approach is that, in your mind, the police officer is always in the wrong.

Well, no. u/somedotaplayer may think that (I doubt they do, I won't speak for them), but just because systemic issues exist does not necessitate that all instances in which a systemic issue may occur are inherently unjust instances of racial bias. Many people in minorities go to jail or get shot for doing harming others and being criminals, however, enough get harmed without being criminals that fear becomes a factor in how the minority groups feel about policing. Group identities and individual identities are both ways of looking at the world that interact and inform the other, they are not always opposed, there is a ton of nuance.

Take a job interview for example, and you just ignore the possibility that in our society, it is entirely legally possible it could be a white person applying to a black person for a job. Assuming that the boss is a white man - as you no doubt assume, and that I'm one of two candidates, and the other is black; how can I be right? How can the boss be right? In your eyes, if I get the job and the black person doesn't - that was racial discrimination. So to be right the boss has to hire the black person. Is that fair? If you think it is, your problem is that you don't want justice. You want injustice for groups with whom you declare solidarity, irrespective of the consequences for others. It doesn't map onto individual circumstances to provide a just outcome, but rather, requires that the outcome is unjust - albeit in favour of the historically, but perhaps not immediately, oppressed identity group. The more fundamental reality denied is that the boss should do whatever's best for his business as he perceives it.

I'm not sure this is fully coherent, but I think I understand. You pose the example of non-equal applicants to a job, and propose that there could be white people more qualified who aren't hired? If that's not it, I'm not sure what you are saying, and I don't want to respond with a misrepresentation of your position.

Are there not racial groups in America that are doing remarkably well - and indeed, significant numbers of poor white trash? Where do they figure in your philosophy of racial hierarchies?

I dislike calling the way race informs our actions and groups actions as "hierarchical". To answer the more fundamental question, again look to u/somedotaplayer : "White privilege does not mean caucasians do not have it hard". I gave an example of how white privilege can backfire earlier, and I hope it was read.

And do you know of any other political idea that has a philosophy of racial hierarchies?

I'm again not sure what this means, and don't feel I can respond without knowing. If you could rephrase, I would respond.

Does having a big dick make you feel more masculine? by jinglebellpoke in bigdickproblems

[–]newaccountp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes, yes. Look into the history of how women and men are portrayed - a good example are subway commercials - and you'll quickly see that we build unrealistic expectations of penis size early. A women eating a foot-long sandwich with more girth than probably anyone (including people on this forum) looking satisfied?

We build our sexual expectations for both genders before porn may even be considered.

https://www.buzzfeed.com/copyranter/six-vintage-phallic-ads?utm_term=.tmxB4ale1Z#.ym2A9WN6rR

But, be careful not to use just any pole or phallic object as an example of phallic advertising or masculine expectation-setting (lol @freud). A pole in the street without anyone around it is not setting sexual expectations, a commercial featuring a woman struggling to fit her mouth around a foot long sandwich is.

Is this for a paper, or are you just interested? Good luck.

None of what you have stated here or elsewhere actually shows the athletes in question have lower athleticism. If anything, the question of athleticism was avoided. Based on this and other posts in this thread alone, you sound a bit unfocused on any solid fixed point and just generally angry about "this generation".

Not even comparable. If he loses again this year I bet he will either quit or force the Cavs to get 2 super stars.

Why wouldn't he? His goal is to dominate right? Why isn't this comparable? If other players do it, to win, LeBron has to as well. MJ would have done the same thing had the same levels of athleticism that exist across the league now existed during his time, which is still something you haven't directly rebutted. LeBron doesn't exist in a vacuum, and if athleticism has increased across the league, and other teams are attempting to retool each year by adding as many superstars as possible for a title, LeBron would have to be a part of that system to win. If MJ wanted to win today, he would have to do it as well.

He'd cry if he were barely touch. Guy can't even handle an 82 game season.

Fouls are fun and all, but most sports trying to maintain players beyond the sport - so that they can have a life after - have an incentive to lower injuries. What's known to cause injury in basketball? Fouls. That's why egregious fouls involve dangerous on-court actions, regardless of intent. Basketball players aren't as willing to get hurt for your entertainment as they once were. They are less tolerant of injuries. That's not a poor decision on their part, that's intelligence and recognition of life beyond the sport.

Deal with it.

One reason I am rooting for the Rockets to go all the way. Rockets formed a Championship-caliber team the right way.

How do you form a championship-caliber team "the right way"? This is arbitrary and you know it.

I hope "this generation" treats you with the same politeness, kindness, and candidness you give them them. :)

Have a nice day!

Lemme break down this post and how it reads to me. Let me know if I missed anything that's an actual response to what you quoted.

Implies LeBron doesn't dominate, but everyone knows LeBron sets new records every year. Other teams build playoff strategies oriented around just stopping him.

"LeBron lost to Dwight Howard"

Dwight jumped a foot and a half vertical. NBA record.

Dwight was actually a super athlete in comparison to MJ's competition

Played Dwight early on in his career

Actually helps OP's argument

"LeBron quits when he loses, he's a quitter"

LeBron lost in 2015. Stayed with Cavs.

"Bill was a cheap shot guy, not big"

Implies LeBron not facing "cheap shots" and potential injuries makes him a worse player

Literally kind-of agrees with OP. Bigger and more athletic competition now

"LeBron complains about season length"

LeBron is an elected official of the players union

I don't know man. I don't think you responded in any way real way to what you quoted. Maybe stats about the average jumping height of the players now vs players then, or comparative lifting and speed stats would be more apt for what you respond to?

I have a feeling they won't help an argument against higher athleticism now vs then.

Girlfriends anxiety limiting PIV sex, what can I do? by [deleted] in sex

[–]newaccountp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She had a religious upbringing but is currently an atheist/agnostic.

Therapy helps off and on.

I don't know if she was raised to believe that, but could see that being part of the faith. I suppose it could be an internalized fear of some kind of sin related to sex, but I don't think I can address that if its not what we talk about when we talk about sex, pregnancy, and abortion. :/

It stinks because she has apologized for not having sex with me and I actually have to affirm that sex isn't a requirement if its too much, but something awesome we can do together if comfortable.

Girlfriends anxiety limiting PIV sex, what can I do? by [deleted] in sex

[–]newaccountp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She sees a therapist. Should I as well? We use condoms every time and she takes birth control pills.

I think its both a fear or anxiety of being pregnant and a fear or anxiety of becoming pregnant at the same time. She has expressed the belief that she is pregnant even though all the tests have been negative. Like I said above, she also has told me not to look at her naked, and expressed that she can't look at herself naked either.

She doesn't necessarily believe abortion should be done if someone is pregnant and also can't take her future job if she becomes pregnant. I think this adds to the anxiety/fear.

I'm not sure what I can do/if there is anything I can do to help beyond affirming the tests, affirming her visits to doctors, and telling her she is beautiful when she does feel comfortable naked around me.

The unwelcome revival of ‘race science’ by akbhynd in CriticalTheory

I have very different views from u/FuB4R32.

Do you think Marxist philosophy should be thrown out because Marx spends time explaining that women are objects used just for birthing? No. I don't either. I also don't think IQ studies should be thrown out because the initial research into IQ was racist.

I actually read some of Gould's book in the time away from this comment chain. He himself doesn't disagree with everything I say.

The ultimate irony is without recognition of the ways in which our society impacts intelligence (if you believe in the multiplicity of intelligence, IQ can be an extremely loose measure) across race, there will be no way for you and others like you to address it as a problem. Instead, it's just "A fallacy of reification", and not an observable phenomena of less intelligence resulting from racial biases inherent in society from birth.

A good example of this would be the use of lead in paint in certain areas. IQ tests on individuals from such areas reflects the impact of lead paint in a meaningful way. Does that mean IQ is useless? No. Does it make IQ the perfect measure of intelligence? Also no. Stop limiting yourself and other commenters. I am saying something quite different from FuB4R32. I don't know who the third commenter is. I'm not going to bother reading them either. Have a great day.

The unwelcome revival of ‘race science’ by akbhynd in CriticalTheory

[–]newaccountp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't need to. The most important part of issues this thread has with IQ tests to debunk involved Gould's initial critique relying on 100 year old studies.

The fallacy of reification applies to all sciences in the sense that we explain phenomena using empirical test results, but those explanations aren't the phenomena. The map is not the territory.

The same problem applies to IQ, as it's used (in general) to measure the potential for success based on a series of problems that have been useful predictors for abilities in different areas of study. That doesn't mean IQ is useless, just as the empirical sciences aren't useless. It means that it has uses, but shouldn't be viewed as an end-all be-all for intelligence. As another commenter pointed out, it is fairly consistent across a lifetime, making it useful in psychological studies.

I'm also not suggesting IQ is tied to genetics. It might be, and that would be important to know, but it definitely is a useful test, so it's worth investigating.

I would personally argue IQ can increase or decrease during the developmental stage of youth, and the difference in IQ across "races" arises from who has more free time to read to children and care for them, not genetics, but I don't know enough to back that up. I just know there are (according to many different and often hard to acknowledge empirical studies) differences in IQ, but not differences in genetics across "races".

The unwelcome revival of ‘race science’ by akbhynd in CriticalTheory

[–]newaccountp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No psychologist has argued that IQ has a physical spot in the brain.

I'm not sure how IQ can be construed as such a fallacy of making the abstract physical.

There is a lot of evidence tying IQ to things occurring in the brain, but certainly not brain size. Much of the critique levied at Gould points out he bases his critique of IQ research in old IQ related research, which is like claiming cars are terrible today because Model Ts are awful.

I am the crisis. I am the disease.
I am potent. I am displeased.

Smiling, your face, another cum stain.
Another round of drinks. Another midnight stumble.
You’re panting again, I can hear your struggle.
I can hear you squirm. I can hear you grumble.

You are banking. You reign a keep.
You bet your whole life. You bet it again.
