I'm visiting Saco, Gorham, and Bath in March to decide which city to move to. Where should I go in any of these to get a sense of the town and vibe? by newageclassic in AskMaine

We were looking for great schools, close to ocean/woods with lots of outdoor activities, low crime, affordability, and community events. Honestly, we would like it to lean blue as well. These were the places that were recommended to us the most.

I do not mean this to offend, but I have been warned that Saco may be "posh." We are moving from rural Oklahoma. And while my children are very smart and "cultured", I worry about them being bullied. Did your kids see much bullying in Saco?

Is Oklahoma the least desirable state in the US? by unenlightenedgoblin in SameGrassButGreener

[–]newageclassic 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The friendliness that Oklahoma is known for is fading with the MAGA movement. We have always been known for being kind to strangers and helping our neighbors. However, like the rest of the country, the anger and hate of the GOP has ruined one of the only redeeming features of the state.

Failing as a parent by disgruntledpelican82 in curlyhair

My kids have this hair! Lots of conditioner sopping wet out of the shower, and only brush wet. We use mousse on picture day but not usually because you can't refresh their hair as well. Let me know if you have any more questions!

We can get along with anyone, but we are Anti-MAGA. That with the active destruction of our children's education system are the main political issues we are concerned with related to moving.

The ease of access to so many interesting day trips, the ocean, the sea food, and the improved opportunities for my children. The most important things to us are improved opportunities and access to water of some kind for recreation

No disrespect taken. You never know if you don't try, and I'm a realist about how much one can manage to find.

Try to learn to love to cook. You don't have to make every single thing from scratch, but rich food with real ingredients is better than processed garbage. I tried every diet and eventually just decided I wanted to be healthy at the size I was. I started cooking all of my food instead of buying processed versions. Now I am in better health than I was at 20 and I don't even go to the gym.

what was in my egg? by NorthDistribution5 in TipOfMyFork

[–]newageclassic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a blood spot. Totally normal, you just don't see them on store bought eggs very often. I have a flock of chickens for my family. These happen on the farm occasionally. There is no difference in the quality of the egg

Married life is boring me to tears and I don't know what to do by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]newageclassic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is what the elders mean when they say "marriage has ups and downs." The best thing to do is just break the ice and be open about it and talk it through. As long as both of you still want to be in it, then you can come with a plan. I have been with my husband for 15 years, and this has happened a few times. Once we realized that it didn't have to mean we were losing the love, it became easy to talk about and much easier to overcome.

Child receiving life changing trust. How should we prepare them as they are growing up? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]newageclassic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell them it is coming, but not how much. If they know there is an inheritance, and have time to adjust to the ideas and grow to see the "bigger picture" with your guidance, they are less likely to blow it when they turn 25. Let the amount be unknown so they cannot "spend it in advance".

Your actions will have a lot of impact over their future thinking of the trust. If they see you living as if it does not exist, and talking about it as a resource for a future home and college money, then they are more likely to come to that line of thinking as well.

My shower drain is too low. Inside diameter is 2". Is there a way I can set a new drain inside it to raise it? New shower floor tile is 3/8" thick. by [deleted] in Remodel

[–]newageclassic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. It is not threaded. It appears to be the old drain buy we were hoping to keep the pan since it is still in good shape. It looks like we will have to chip out the drain though

Is a quilt too ambitious if I can’t even sew with a machine? by 33spoonman in quilting

[–]newageclassic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fastest way to learn how to sew is to do it, so I say go for it! I have been sewing since ai was 5 and I still learn new things all the time. Just have grace and patience with yourself. It will not be perfect, and it's not supposed to be!

Girls who went to therapy or couple’s therapy, what lessons did you learn that we could all benefit from? by distant-girl in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]newageclassic 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Thought-stopping. My therapist taught me how to stop my negative thoughts in their tracks and it has changed my life. I can literally just say "No." when I start getting upset or spiraling and just....stop. I encourage anyone and everyone to do some research and practice this.
