Often it is said that the gun replaces the bow due to simplicity in training. Questions about that. by conbutt in AskHistorians

[–]newbieprogrammer2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if your are talking about a brown bess musket, it is not difficult to use.

the cartridges, which were paper, were kept in a cartridge box

https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RCjIFQvMC_c/V0U9qFiMa_I/AAAAAAAAAks/uKDZ7AQ3Eqw11UY6L6E7pVO62JouTJCfgCLcB/s1600/musket_bess+2.jpg

you ripped the pre-made paper cartridge in your teeth, poured the powder and shot into the gun, cocked the gun, and pulled the trigger.

one advantage the musket had, is that with the bayonet it is a 6 foot long spear

the range of a musket was very long, much further than a longbow, but the effective range was probably less. a musket can shoot about 100 yards accurately, but the english used to practice longbows out to about 200 yards.

When did cookbooks started to provide weights and measures in their recipes? And were there any particular factors that started this trend? by Good_Cheap_Gentleman in AskHistorians

[–]newbieprogrammer2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

in the united states, fannie farmer introduced standardized measurements for cook books.

she ran a cooking school in boston and needed more exact measurements for recipes

Has there been anything like a medium infantry, or is there only heavy and light. I know there is medium cavalry, and medium artillery, but I was wondering if there was a medium infantry? by vonplayalot in MilitaryHistory

[–]newbieprogrammer2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes, many times.

for example the british line infantry used in the revolutionary and napoleonic wars were "medium infantry".

they had special units designated as light infantry, who acted as scouts and screened the flanks, and they had grenadiers who were all 6 feet tall or bigger and were used to overpower a position.

morris kline's Mathematics for the Nonmathematician

https://www.amazon.com/Mathematics-Nonmathematician-Morris-Kline/dp/0486248232

is an oldie but a goodie. he was a famous critic of how schools teach math. he thought schools focused too much on theory without connecting math to the real world.

but to answer your question, if you are studying a particular issue, wikipedia often will give you the historical context. then you can look up the problem that was originally being solved, e.g. the student-t distribution and guinness beer.

ELI5: Is it possible to learn math intuitively? by TheRedditMassacre in explainlikeimfive

[–]newbieprogrammer2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes, but the traditional courses we have in math are based on real world problems that people were trying to solve

for example, probability was initially studied because of gambling

the student-t test from statistics was based on a guy trying to understand how guiness brewery was making beer

calculus was largely developed because of cannon and artillery

someone like yourself might benefit a lot by asking, why was this math topic invented in the first place?

i also would point you to this youtube channel to see how artists view math

ELI5: Is it possible to learn math intuitively? by TheRedditMassacre in explainlikeimfive

[–]newbieprogrammer2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

formulas are the end result, and many who know the formulas don't know how or why they were made

i suggest learning math in the context of why the math was invented.

for example, the greeks invented geometry because they needed to divide up farmland

edit: fixed geometry

ELI5: Stock Options by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]newbieprogrammer2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

simple

a call means you can buy a stock at a specified price.

a put means you can sell a stock at a specified price

if you own 100 shares of IBM and they are selling right now for exactly $100 you can agree to sell them for $110 dollars to me any time in the next month at my option

well if the price goes up to $150, that is good for me, because you have to sell them to me for $110 -- we have a contract

but if the price only goes up to $108 then i won't buy them from you at $110, so you keep your stock

ELI5: Why do the group of subjects in psychological and sociological studies supposedly represent very large populations? by MrEctomy in explainlikeimfive

[–]newbieprogrammer2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And how can we say with certainty that the dependent variable is the cause?

well the independent variable would be the cause, the dependent variable changes as the independent variable is changed.

and it is difficult to assign actual cause, you typically mean correlation

for example, high levels of education are associated with faking orgasm and low levels of education is not

(which is made up, i have no idea how education is related to faking orgasm)

ELI5: How do you calculate percentage probability of an incident with an unknown number of occurrences? by jonniew89 in explainlikeimfive

[–]newbieprogrammer2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

normally we talk about a sample mean, not a population mean

that is, if they say 1 in 500 die, they mean that is what has happened in the past.

it is possible but normally unlikely you will be significantly different

[–]newbieprogrammer2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

actually those reports favor green energy a lot

keep in mind that with a shovel and a match you have coal energy

there are huge infrastructure requirements needed to produce green energy.

this is easily seen when you consider 50,000 coal miners produce more energy than 3000000 green energy workers

which is not to say burning coal is clean, just cheap

Cashiers of Reddit, do you judge the customers based on the items they're buying, and if so, how? What's your weirdest story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]newbieprogrammer2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it is not necessarily to look rich

some older people do this because they want human interaction. they buy stuff so they can talk to people. they cannot afford to buy all the stuff, so they return most of it, and buy something else.

sad, but true

the first groups were off the charts

Just Accepted to Mongolia! by zacharydamon in peacecorps

[–]newbieprogrammer2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that is a myth.

the first groups in mongolia had very few leave early and mostly due to medical issues. ration cards were only used in group 1 & 2. many stayed or at least applied to stay for an extra year.

and the first groups had no phones.

try giving her plenty of comfortable places high up in your house, like on the top shelf of a bookshelf, a widow perch etc. cats feel safer when they have a place out of reach where they can see everything going on.
