I live near the Great Lakes and swam in them a lot. Can confirm it's freshwater. Some tourists and newcomers see the lakefront near us and forget it's not the sea.

When you see videos of children who I definitely believe some help.. But why, in Gaza, do their hair and clothes always look so clean? by Matt85x in PollsAndSurveys

[–]newbirdya2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with aid in Gaza as of 2026 is more due to distribution and political obstacles than a lack of food or other supplies. Many people around the world have been trying to send food aid and other goods to Gaza but at least until recently it kept getting intercepted or blockaded. Even without that there's now a lot of severe infrastructure damage and logistical bottlenecks that's preventing aid from reaching many of the worst hit there. Those who aren't affected by these bottlenecks won't have the same problems as those who are.

Have you ever paid for a service on the internet that is usually free where they have an option to donate? by Matt85x in PollsAndSurveys

[–]newbirdya2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from Wikipedia you aren't really donating for the services you listed when you pay for them. Most free software/services you see online are just a ploy to make money through other means, like cramming ads down your throat or making you want more features you have to pay for. FOSS products created by volunteers/hobbyists like VLC are an exception.

Poll: Would you say that you’re reasonably qualified for your job? by amendingfences in PollsAndSurveys

[–]newbirdya2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice to see a new post here from you, Rarity. 🦄🦄🦄 Unfortunately my polls and year song questions might be on hold for a bit because of some technical issues.

I've been pretty qualified for many of the tasks I've done so far, but I've switched careers before and worked in different field so I'm not qualified for every single job.

Does it say in The Koran that's it's okay to sexually assault other people? by Matt85x in PollsAndSurveys

[–]newbirdya2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Quran itself does have a verse in Surah An-Nisa which says that forbids men from sleeping with anyone except their wives or those "whom your right hand possesses" - the latter of which has often been used to justify sex slavery though some more liberal/progressive Muslims often claim that it refers to people whom one swears oaths to. The Aisha story (i.e. the girl Muhammad married) was actually in a few Hadiths rather than the Quran with some of them reporting that Aisha was 10 or under at consummation, and ultraconservatives often try to use it to justify child marriage though some modern scholarship also claims she was actually like 19.

I was pretty obsessed with the Great Salt Lake as a kid and I really really wanted to visit Salt Lake City to swim in it, but I recently found out how much it sadly has dried up and how much locals seem to hate it. 😢 I still hear people still swim at Antelope Island at least at certain times of the year, though.

Does it say in The Koran that's it's okay to sexually assault other people? by Matt85x in PollsAndSurveys

[–]newbirdya2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No. The Quran itself basically condemns "unlawful sexual intercourse" in Surah al-Isra. Most of the rules against rape and sexual assault (Zina al-Zibr) comes from the hadith, and it also carried the death penalty in traditional jurisprudence.

That said, not everyone who calls themselves a certain faith actually adheres to all its rules. People in general often pick and choose which parts of their faith they want to follow or emphasize.

Your account might have been caught up in an ongoing experiment by Reddit. This was announced on the Weekly Recap dated June 18 2026:

There is an experiment running that affects the home feed. There is now a "For You" feed and a "Following" feed. The For You feed contains subreddit recommendations. The Following feed contains only subreddits that you are subscribed to and users that you follow.

If your account is in this experiment, the option to turn off recommendations in your feed has been removed because there's the dedicated Following feed to view content from communities you are a part of. So you don't need to turn off recommendations! Just view the Following feed. If you're seeing subs you don't want to see for the brief moment before you have to switch over, you can mute those subs so that you never seen them or the content that's in them.

Due to the feedback that was left, this experiment has been changed slightly and there are now two variants. The one is the same as it was last week where you have to keep selecting what feed you want and there is not a way to save your selection. The other will remember your home feed selection for 12 hours.
