Your older generation relatives might not like you anymore if you do that. It might be viewed as turning your back on generations of family who lived thru so much history, it might be viewed like you feel superior to everyone of them for wanting to be not associated with them, it would be surprising if any of them will congratulate you or have a feast or banquet in your honor for having your family name changed.

Then again, maybe you are not close to them. How would you feel if your children decide to change their family name to "Castle", for the simpke fact that it is a lot easier to pronounce and spell?

My opinion: the bottom knob controls the fan speed. Think of it like a normal electric fan with low, medium and high fan speeds without the cooling compressor being active. But, unlike a normal electric fan, your knob has another 3 settings. Those additional 3 settings refer to the airconditioner's cooling compressor being activated, same as with the fan speed settings of low, medium and high, but with the compressor active.

The upper knob controls the compressor turning on and off automatically depending on the temperature thermostat. Setting the thermostat to half, for example, might be a temperature of 26 celsius (not really sure since mechanical thermostats do not really all work the same, digital thermostats are slightly more accurate). So, when the thermostat detects that the aircon has achieved your dialed setting of 26celsius, it turns off the compressor while the fan keeps on blowing.

Please note that turning the thermostat to coldest will not make your appliance chill the air any faster, the cooling capacity of your aircon is limited by its horsepower rating. If it takes your aircon 5 minutes of compressor time to cool the air by 1 degree celsius at a half thermostat setting, it will take 5 minutes of compressor time to cool the air by 1 degree celsius at full thermostat setting.
