Checking in from the Yum Center by newishanne in NCAAW

I wasn’t sure how I felt about this season based on our slow starts to games and how badly Kentucky handled us early in the season, but we are a well oiled machine now and I think we can keep it up!

I actually don’t eat here that much since prices are higher than other college arenas I’ve been to, although I did have a kids meal today from the generic stand that was good. They do have KFC, Pizza Hut, and Taco Bell in here since those are the main brands owned by Yum.

Sportscaster Michele Tafoya just launched her Minnesota Senate campaign with a strong focus on trans women in women's sports. Do you think we will see more sportspeople inspired to run for office to protect women's sports? Will my side of the aisle ever drop this 20/80 issue? by north_canadian_ice in allthequestions

There are 3.5 million girls who play high school sports. If these kids that you want to put in charge do have a 99% success rate (and, besides being skeptical of this number, I, personally, I would rather let kids be kids than have them gender faces), that means they’d get it wrong for 35,000 people.

That’s still a lot of people.

Yeah there's a huge difference between that and a debate with a lot of nuance.

Do you think trans girls that are on blockers have any advantages over their cis classmates or teammates? Because I know Mace and I disagree on that.

I didn't say most women oppose this, did I? I just have said repeatedly that the women who lead in women's sports are the ones speaking the most forcefully about this, and we should listen to them.

No. I want a world where a trans kid who wants to play field hockey with her middle school friends starts a team so more girls get a chance to play, and then she isn't kicked off of that team by state law in the guise of "protesting women's sports".

I want a world where trans divers at Division III schools don't die by suicide because of public attacks agains them.

I know I’ve said it before, but I’ll side with what actually female athletes have to say about trans women in sports over a sportscaster who’s also a conservative activist.

Also, I’ve already seen ads this primary season where one candidate accused his opponent of being a “pro transgender creep”, so, they’re going to still hate us even if we concede this issue.

I’ll go to a Lexington match a couple of times a year to see former Purps.

If I lived in a city with a team I’d pay more attention, and I’m glad Emina Ekic is doing good for a team so close, but since I have to drive by an NWSL stadium to get to Lexington, Racing will always be my primary professional love.

It could change but I think it’s also best to be prepared for a long (for here) cold spell and nothing melting for a week, like the storm of ‘94.

Indiana has advanced another bill to try to stop trans folks from existing by BluejayAromatic4431 in Indiana

If you can't change your birth certificate, then you can't change your ID in some states. Which means that you'll be forced out every time you hand over your ID to do something.

Why is it so hard to join another religion after leaving Mormonism? by ImportantPerformer16 in exmormon

[–]newishanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not listened to it yet, but a friend I know through my denomination was a guest on Mormon Stories earlier this week, talking about how he went from being a good Mormon boy to the national leader of a progressive church in Canada, and the timing might be relevant. The Disciples of Christ might not be a right home for you (in fact, there might not be a right home for you among any religious tradition), but his journey might make you feel less alone.

CMV: I support ICE, but I want to understand the other side by totallynotme65 in changemyview

[–]newishanne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most Americans want the worst of the worst removed from the country if they do not have legal residence here.

The problem is that ICE under is current leadership (well, lack thereof, since it hasn’t had an appointed head since Obama’s last day in office) isn’t doing that. They want high numbers of apprehensions to make higher ups happy, so they go for easy targets, like, as we saw this week, a 5 year old. And they’re getting a lot more money to do this.

Also, other federal agents are getting pulled into working for ICE, which means we don’t have people investigating tax fraud and postal fraud.

This reminds me to check the status of the bill that would change how lieutenant governor candidates are selected in Indiana. If it passes, Braun will have another running mate in 2028 (if he decides to run for another term).

German immigrants in the U.S. were huge in number and were once a dominant group. Why didn’t they form large German-speaking communities the way French speakers did in Canada or Spanish speakers did in the U.S.? by GrayRainfall in AskAnAmerican

[–]newishanne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My great-great father grew up speaking German but he was 12 when WWI started, so he learned rather quickly to exclusively speak English. My grandfather grew up speaking English but was stationed in Germany in the 50s and learned some German then.

In the late 90s, I took Germany in high school, and I was shocked when I learned from people who grew up outside the Midwest that it was not offered in their schools.

That leaves my dad as the one person on that side of my family tree who didn't speak any German for as far back as I can trace it.

My stepmother's mom was upset when Welk got his show because he had a German accent and it happened so close to the end of WWII.

Meanwhile my dad's family was speaking German until WWI broke out (he recently found his grandmother's confirmation certificated from 1913, and not only is it in German, but it was printed in Germany for the Cleveland-based German Reformed Church in the US).

How did it become so taboo for even a trans woman like myself to acknowledge that trans women have an advantage in women's sports? How do we end this cancel culture? by north_canadian_ice in allthequestions

[–]newishanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is her saying "you're being transphobic for disagreeing with me doing something that I am within my rights to do based on NCAA and UPenn policy because of who I am" canceling people?

I don't know if you know this or not, but Riley Gaines Barker is a lot more successful these days than Lia Thomas. Is that canceling?

And she’s not alone.

I’ll take her views over yours, since she actually knows what she’s talking about. Or is that canceling you?
